kind which is comparatively simple in construction, highly efiicient in operation, and otherwise well adapted to meet with the requirements for successful commercial use.
The present invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.

Referring in detail to the drawings, the present pump is of the lift type and includes a vertical elongated cylinder 5 provided at the top with a removable cap 6, and at the bottom with numerous inlet openings 1. Reciprocable in the cylinder 5 is a piston including a head 8 on the lower end of a piston rod 9 which has an enlarged upper end portion l formed at one side with transverse rack teeth H. Journaled transversely of and extending through the cylinder is a shaft I2 formed with gear teeth I 3 that mesh with the rack teeth H. As shown in Figure 3,
the cylinder 5 is formed with a transverse housing I4 in which the shaft [2 is rotatably fitted, and said shaft I2 is provided at one end with a reduced extension l5 that projects through 'an end of the housing [4 and has an operating crank 16 fixed on the outer end thereof. Fixed to and movable with the piston rod 9 are vertically spaced, apertured discs I! that slidably fit in the cylinder 5 and guide the piston rod 9 in its reciprocating. movements so that said rod ismaintained axially of the cylinder.
The piston head 8 includes a cup packing 18 whose body portion is clamped between discs I9 and 20 that are centrally secured, as at 2|, to the lower end of the piston rod 9, said discs l9 and 20 and the body of packing [8 being provided with registered openings, as at 22; The packing I8 is arranged to be expanded into engagementwiththe cylinder 5 on upward movement of the piston and to offer no resistance to downward movement of the piston other than the slight friction between these parts when assembled. Slidable on the piston rod 9 is a valve disc 23 that normally gravitates to a lowered position upon the upper disc 20 to normally close the openings in the piston head at 22. The rod 9 has a suitable stop, such as a cross pin 24, to limit the upward movement of valve disc 23.
Fixed to the cap 6 and communicating through the latter with the interior of cylinder 5 is a discharge spout 25 having a downwardly and outwardly inclined outer end portion 26 on the free extremity of which is provided a piston head 21 adapted to be snugly received within the cylinder 28 of a conventional grease gun, as shown in Figure 1. The piston head 21 consists of a cup packing 29 whose body portion is clamped be tween clamping plates 30 and 3| threaded on the outer end of the discharge spout 26, a jamb nut 32 being threaded against the inner plate 30 to lock the assembly together. The outer plate 3| is relatively thick and provided with a bore therethrough which communicates with openings through the body of packing 20 and plate 30, and arranged in this bore is a spring-seated check valve 33 that seats in an outward direction. As shown, the spout 26 preferably includes a detachable outer section carrying the head 21. Also, the outlet end of spout 26 is normally closed by a valve member 34 yieldingly seated by a tension spring 35 attached at one end to said valve and at its other end to a transverse pin fixed in and extending across the spout 26, as shown in Figure 7.
In operation, the pump is disposed with its lower end portion projecting through an opening in the top of a grease drum indicated by dotted lines at D, the upper end of the cylinder projecting above the drum and the lower end thereof resting upon the bottom of the drum as illus- .trated. The pump may be suitably secured and braced in this position by means generally indihated at 31; The grease, which is in a fluid state, enters the pump cylinder 5 through the apertures I; and upon rotating'the shaft 2 to: lower} thepiston head 8; the gieasesfiows through thi piston head 8 and forces the valve 23 open.
