SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,246, dated March 22, 1881.

To' all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FLOYD HEAVENER, of Denver, inthe county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented anew and Improved Chair-Brace; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming part ot' this specification, in.which- 1o Figure l is a side elevation; Fig. 2, an undernea-th view. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation.
The object ot' my invention is to provide a set of' braces for a chair which shall hold the legs, back, and seat rnily together against i 5 any tendency to loosen or become separated.
lt consist-s in combining with the chair two wires runnin g t'roni the cross-bar of the back of the chair down through the seat, and thence to the front corners of the seat and up through 2o the same, over which wires two other wires are strained, which pass from the two hind legs to the two fore legs, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, A represents an ordinary fornnof chair whose back is composed otl a cross-bar at the top and rounds connecting the same to the seat. Through the cross-bar at the top ot' the back are run two wires, c a, which have heads at their upper ends, and
3c pass down the back on each side thereof and through the seat, underneath which they are twisted together to form an X, (see Fig. 2,) and then extended to the front corners of the seat,and up through the saine to the 3 5 upper surface, where they are provided with heads. lf, however, the chairbe an arm-chair, these ends are not allowed to terminate at the seat, but extend up through the seat to the arms, in which armsthe ends are held by 4o heads, as aforesaid. At the point b, where the two wires a, a are twisted together beneath the seat, two other wires, c c, are twisted together to form an X, and looped over the part b, so as to strain the wires a a downwardly.
These wires c c have heads at their ends, and
pass from the hind legs over the twisted portion b, and then to the front legs, the heads of these wires being embedded on the outside surface.
In order to tighten the brace, the wires c 5o are rst laid across the section b and then twisted ou each side of the same, and then, if necessary to keep the last two Wires from untwisting, a piece of wire, e, is extended `through the loops formed by the object which was used to twist the wires. By means of this arrangement ot wires it will be seen that the chair is braced in all directions, and there is no chance for any ofthe parts to become separated.
Having thus described my invention, what I 6o claim as new isl. The combination, with the back, seat, and legs of a chair, of the two wires a a, extending from the top of the hack down through seat, and up again through the seat, and a second pair of wires, c c, looped over the irstmentioned wires beneath Vthe seat, and connecting' the four legs of the chair, substantially as shown and described.
2.v The combination, with the back, seat, and 7o legs of a chair, of the two wires a a, extending from the back down through the seat, and crossed and twisted to forni sections b, and then fastened to the seat, and the two wires c c, also crossed and twisted and looped over the section b, and connecting the four legs, as described.
8. The combination, with the legs, the seat, and the back ot' a chair, of four wires, twisted in pairs and connected together beneath the 8o seat of the chair, and having one set of ends extending downwardly to the four legs of the chair, and the other set of ends extended up through the seat and the back of the chair, substantially as described.
