'As the tube D rests upon the top of' the bell J which is rigidly attached tothe tube or rod 1f, it is evident that the tube D will rise and descend with the tube K.
, The operation is as follows: The articles to be ground are placed upon the disk or plate M', and are held in their properV position 4by the rings I". The rods 0 and Q are then adjusted according to the size ot' the article O' or the stone A by turning the hand-wheel V', for thereby the barrel-pinion T'is rotated, and as the cogwheel H engages with this barrelpinion '1" in all its positions, this 'wheel H andthe sleeve P attached thereto will also be rotated; but as the two ends of,l sleeve P are threaded inversely the rods O und Q will be separated if the wheel V's rotated in one direction, and will be drawn together if rotated in tho opposite direction. The tube D' is rotated by means of' the belt W passing around the pulley G. As the bell J is rigid and; the4 pinion N that engages with the teeth of the bell is rotated on the vertical axis by the fork (J,it follows that the pinion must also rotate on-its horizontal axis-that is, it 4rotates'on its shaft B, and al: the same time runs around iu n circle'parallel .to this axis but as the stoneA. is mounted ou the shaft B, it will rotate with this shaft, but at the sumo time it will rotate on a. dinmetricnl vertical axis, as itis mounted in the middle of the shaft B, mounted in the fork O, which is rotated in the verticnl'oxis.
The stone A may be replaced by others of different size or structure, according to the hardness, nature, or sizeof the glass article that is to be ground.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.. A machine for grinding glassware, made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a grinding-stone mounted on by means of which the stone may be raised from or lowered upon the article to be ground, as may be required.
2. In a machine for grinding glassware, the combination, with the suspended rotating grinding-stone A, of an adjust-able suspension device, of the pivoted beam S, the connectin g-rod V, the eccentric B', and the shaft C', substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose of raising the stone A by means of a slight rotation of the shaft O', as
'set forth.
3. In a machine for grinding glass, the conibination, with the suspending-rods Q and O. having inverse screw-threads at the ends, of the sleeve P, threaded inversely at the ends, the cog-wheel H, the barrel-pinion T', and a train of gearing and shat'tin g for rotating the barrel-pinion T' at will, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose -of adjusting the length oi' the suspending device ofthe grinding-stone according to the size of this stone or the size of the article to be ground.
Il. In a machine for grinding glassware, the
combination, with the plate M', of a series ot' radially-pivoted holdingrings P', provided with cushioned springs Q', substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose of holding the articles securely.
5. In a machine for grinding glassware, the combinatiomwith the plate M',having pivoted 1 holders P' for the articles to be ground, of the shaft K', the ratchet-wheel J', having as many teeth as there are holders P' on the plate M', and ofthe sprii1gpawl H', substantially as herein shown and described and for thcpnrpose of 'rotating the plate alike distance every time.
6. In a machine for grinding glassware, the
B', and the frame F', ot' the rod G', the pawl Il', the ratchet-wheel J', the shaft K'the plate M', the connecting-rod V, the pivotcd beam S, and the grinding'apparatus suspended from 'the same, as set forth, for the purpose of passing the articles to be ground under the stone Vand lowering the stone upon the article by a slight rotation of thc shaft 0'.
