INVENTOR.
Patented Dec. 11, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE TRIMMING AND PINKING DEVICE AND THE LIKE 4 Claims.
My invention relates to edge cutting devices and more particularly to such apparatus, which are especially adapted for trimming and for finishing the seamed edges of cloth or other suitable materials, and which also is to .be used for cutting said materials in a straight line, or, if so desired for cutting same in a scalloping form which is generally called pinking, and which when in such use, is to be employed for the purpose of preventing the raveling of the cloth edges, and thereby preventing said seamed edges from becoming weakened and also for giving said edges a finished appearance when completed.
Manifestly an object of my invention is to pro vide a suitable pinking device which may be attached to and disposed upon the mounting plate, which is positioned upon the base member 01 a sewing machine, regardless of its make, said device to be disposed at a close proximity to the feed member bar and the needle bar thereof, and which in operation will pink the cloth edges while simultaneously sewing together said edges of said material.
Accordingly an object of my invention is to provide a suitable 'pinking device which, in its preferred construction, consists of a horizontally disposed plate means, the top surface section of which is provided with circularly disposed scalloping cutting edges over which a suitable roller means is placed and which is held thereover at a suitable pressure, while at the underside of said plate means a suitable mounting plate is positioned, the upper surface section of which is provided with a circular groove, wherein a set or a row of frictionless bearing balls are placed, said circular plate means being then disposed upon said row of frictionless ball bearings, having at its center a suitable stem means which is disposed within a suitable center bushing means adapted for holding said stem means in place and for engaging a suitable friction drive means which is provided with a suitable extension lever which extends outwardly therefrom, for engaging and for transmitting the reciprocal action of the feed bar member of the sewing machine into a horizontally pivotal and rotary action of said circular plate means, and thereby causing said circular plate means to revolve it at intervals, and, about the center of said stem means, and in this manner the relative movement of rotation is so arranged whereby the lateral distance of said scalloping cutting edges upon said plate will cor respond to the feed of the cloth length as it may be fed by said feed bar member, including the length of the stitch, while operating said sewing machine.
Another object of my invention is to provide said device with a pressure roller means which is revolubly mounted upon a suitable ofi center shaft means, said shaft means being adjustably and stationarily mounted within a suitable bracket means which is provided with a base member adapted for attaching and for bolting same upon the base of the sewing machine and thereby allowing the peripheral surface of said roller means to bear against said scalloping cutting edges of said plate means, so that the pinking of the cloth edges may be had while sewing same together during the operation of the sewing machine.
A further object of my invention is to provide said device with a circular plate means which is horizontally mounted upon a mounting plate,
which is normally disposed upon the base and in close proximity to the feed and needle bars of the sewing machine and adapted for revolving about its center; the top section of said circular plate having scalloping cutting edges, which in design or construction may be of any desired shape or configuration, wherever an adjustable roller means is disposed for causing its peripheral surface to bear upon and come in contact with said scalloping cutting edges, said roller means having a shaft which is provided with an insulating bushing which is mounted within a suitable bracket member for holding said roller means in its proper position, having a suitable connector means attached to said shaft adapted for heating said roller means, so that in operation, when said cloth is fed between said scalloping cutting edges and said peripheral surface of said roller means it will scorch the fiber of said cloth, thus pinking the cloth edges while sewing same together during the operation of said machine.
Another object of my invention is to provide said device with a suitable circular plate means which is horizontally and revolubly mounted upon a mountingplate which is normally disposed upon the base of a sewing machine, having a suitable roller means adjustably and revolubly disposed over the surface of said circular plate means; the peripheral surface of said roller means being provided with suitably arranged scalloping cutting edges which are adapted for contacting the surface of said circular plate means, and which also is provided with a shaft mounted within an insulated bushing means and disposed within a bracket member for holding said roller means in place; said device having suitable electrical connectors for transmitting the electrical current to said roller means and Other and further objects and, advantages of.
my invention aswill hereinafter more fully appear, I attain by the construction herein shown on the drawing and described in the specification forming a part of my application.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which the similar reference characters denote the similar parts.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the sewing machine showing my invention mounted upon its base and in close proximity to the feed and needlebars. I
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of my invention showing the construction of the roller carrying bracket disposed in relation toand over the sealloping plate member, showing same mounted upon the base member of the sewing machine.
-Fig. 3 shows'a top view of the device disposed in relation to the feed bar member of the sewingmachine; showing-same in enlarged form.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional-view of the device taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the friction'drive means, taken on the line 5-5 of the -Fig. 6 is airelevational and sectional view of 2' the device, showing same ina modified form.
Describing-myinvention more in detail, in its broader aspect, said invention comprises a circurlar plate 2 which is horizontally-disposed upon a mounting plate 4, as shown in Fig. 3, and which is placed in close proximity to the feed bar member 6-and the needle passage 8. l i j Said circular plate 2 is provided at its top surface section JD with a scalloping cutting edge l2 which is circularly disposed thereon and is raised off the surface for providing asharp cutting edge,
while at its underside a suitable stem member is provided, the purpose of which will be presently described.
The mounting plate 4 is provided with a circular groove l4 wherein a plurality of frictionless ball-bearings l6 are placed and which are for the purpose of bearing against the under side E8 of said plate 2 and for supporting same while it is rotated about its center stem member 20.
Said stem member 2|] is held in place within a locating bushing 22 which is located in said mounting plate 4, having its extended end 24 provided with a pair of flanges 26 between which flanges 26 the frictionldrive means 28 is positioned, comprising a collar member 30 having a set of angularly disposedgrooves 32 which are adapted for receiving therein suitable rollers 34 and which are supported in place by means of extension springs 36, so as to permit said rollers 34 to bear against the surface 38, as shown in Fig. 5.
Said'collar member 30 is provided with an eX- tension lever 40 the end of which terminates with a suitable knob, 42, the surface section of which is adapted for bearing against the rear section 44 of said feed bar member 6, and in addition said collar member 30 is provided with a suitable extension bar member 46 the end of which is equipped with a suitable Spring 48 the end of which is connected to the base member 50 of the sewing machine 52.
-It may be noted that said spring 48 will have the tendency to hold said knob 42 of said extension lever 40 against the rear section 44 of said feed bar member 6, thus in operation, the reciprocal movement of said collar member 30 about its axis will cause said rollers 34 to engage said locating bushing 22, thus imposing, arotative movement to saidfcircular pla'te2; caused by said reciprocal movement of the feed'bar member 6 during the operation of said sewing machine 62, and any adjustment of the stitch which is made for changing the reciprocal travel of said feed bar member 6, will cause said plate 2 to move in relation to the feed of the cloth or any other material which is fed'thereby, while sewing the edges of said material" together.
In order to cut the cloth edges by means of said scalloping edges [2, a suitable: roller 54 is provided, comprising a pressure collar 56, the peripheral surface of which is adapted for-bearing upon said cutting edges l2, and also having a frictionless radial bearing 58 which is mounted upona stud Bil of the shaft member 52.
' Said shaft member 62 is at' off-center relation to said stud 60 and is mounted within a'socket 64 of the bracket member 66 having its rear section 68 provided witha suitable lockingmember 10, while said bracket 66 is provided with a locating member l2, which isfor. the .purpose'of locating and holding said shaft member 62 in position,"
during the'operation of the device. I
For the purpose of mountingsaid, bracket 66 upon the basemember 50 of said sewing machine 52 its rear section 14 is provided-with a-base plate, '36 which is undercut asatJBfor providing the clearance for said mounting plate 4, while; said base plate 16 is equipped with suitable screws, 80, for fastening same in place asshown in Figs. 3,
and 4.
In operation said feed-bar member 5 supported by the foot 82 of the foot lever 84 auses the cloth.
or other material to pass therebetween and simultaneously allows the needle of the needle-bar 86 to sew the cloth edges togetherhby, means, ofthe thread 88, and also allows the extreme'edges of said cloth to be fed in between the scalloping cutting edges I2 and the pressure collar 56,:thus pinking said edges during the operation of the machine, and also allowing any changes of movement or of a stroke of said feed bar member 6 to change the circular movement of said plate 2 so that the sewing of said cloth edges and the pinking thereof are accomplished simultaneously and without interruption and any sideward pull of said cloth material duringthe operation of the apparatus is eliminated.
In Fig. 6 I have shown the apparatus in a modified form wherein-the circular plate 2 is of similar construction aS shown in, Figs. 3 and 4, having a bracket member 65 as hereinbefore described.
It may be noted however that said plate 2 may be entirely flat at its outer surface Hi and that said pressure collar 56? at its surface 90 may be provided, with suitably cut scalloping cutting edges 92.
Said pressure collar 56' may, if so desired, be provided with a suitable conduit rod 94 which extends through a hard rubber shaft member 62v and has its outwardly extending end 96 provided with a suitable terminal 98 to'which an electric said cloth material will become scorched instantaneously, which will cause a fibre rupture and separation, thus leaving the edges cut in a zigzag form and preventing the cloth fibre from raveling.
While I have thus described my invention with great particularity, it will be clear that the same may be modified throughout a wide range.
I accordingly do not propose to be limited to the exact details of construction herein shown on the drawing and described in the specification, but reserve the right in practice to make the necessary changes and the modifications therein, which may come within the scope of the appended claims.
