Description

(ModeL) H. G. SZINK. Machine for Welding Links.
Patented March 22,1881.
- luvanlor) WMQ N. EIER$. PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHE UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. SZINK, OF ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO LEWIS R. POFFENBERGER, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FO R WELDING LINKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,071, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed May 5, 1880.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY G. SzINK, of A1- toona, in the county of Blair and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Welding Chain-Links; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the die.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line :0 ac, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the anviLdie.
Corresponding parts of the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to machines for welding chain-links; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim,
2 5 ,In the drawings, A represents the upright or standard of any ordinary drop-hammer, which may be operated by hydraulic, steam, or other power.
The anvil B forms the lower part of the die,
in which the links are welded,-the upper part, D, of said die being attached to and carried by the drop-hammer E. The anvil-die rests within the anvil B, as shown. The face of the anvil B is recessed, so as to accommodate the 5 lower half of the link which is to be welded.
The sides of the anvil-die G are formed with rabbets H and its top with a groove, H, de-
signed to hold and accommodate the link during operation.
The upper part, D, of the die consists of a block provided with a recess, 1, to accommodate the upper portion of the anvil-die G of the lower die-section. The sides of the recess 1 have grooves J, which pass down the sides 4 5 of the blank when in place during the operation of welding the link. The lower part of the (ModeL) lower diesection is provided with a notch or recess, K, to admit the nibs of the tongs by which the link is removed from the die.
In operation, a rod or blank, cut to the required length, is first bent at the center to form an inverted- U -shaped blank, which is placed upon the anvil-die, the arms of the blank extending down along the sides of the same. The upper section, D, of the die is meanwhile held in a raised position. When the upper die-section is caused to drop'it forces the ends of the linkblank down around the bottom of the anvil-die G, and welds them securely, If desired, the Welded joint may afterward be ham- 6o mered or forged between the dies, the link being removed and held between the faces of the upper and lower die-sections, B and D.
By this invention heavy chain-links, such as those used for car-couplings, may be easily and rapidly manufactured.
Owing to the peculiar construction of the dies there is no room in the latter for the accumulation of scales and sparks, and delays for the purpose of cleaning out the dies are therefore avoided.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States s/" In a machine for Welding chain-links, the anvil B, recessed, as shown, and having the anvil-die G resting in said recess and projecting upwardly above the horizontal face of the anvil B, the anvil-die Grbeing notched and recessed at K, rabbeted at H, and grooved at H, in combination with the upper die-section,
D, recessed at I and grooved at J, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY o. SZINK.
