N. FEIERS. FHOTOLKTHCIGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS CULHAM, OF PRINCETON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
VEHICLE-HUB.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 239,032, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed December 8, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS OULHAM, of Princeton, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Hubs and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to vehicle-hubs; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described with reference to the drawing, which represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved hub.
My invention, which is a metallic hub, is composed, essentially, of a main body or axlebox, A, upon which is formed, by casting or otherwise, an annular flange, B, to form a permanent rest or abutment for the outer edge of the spokes. Upon the box or body A is adjusted another shdin gflange, C, facing flange B, as shown. The ends of the box A are provided with exterior screw-threads, D E, the outer one, D, to receive a cap, F, covering the axle-nut, and preventing dust and dirt from getting to the latter and into the axle-box. Upon the thread E, at the inner end of the axle-box, is adjusted a sleeve, G, the outer edge of which abuts, as shown, against the sliding flange C upon the hub or axle-box. Upon its inner side the sleeve or collar G is provided with an annular flange, H, the outer edge of which adjoins the inner edge of the hub or axle-box. Upon the spindle of the axle I, adjoining the inner edge of flange H, is formed a collar or flange, J, by which the sleeve G is prevented from working loose. Sleeve G is provided with an opening, K, through which the axle-bearing may be conveniently oiled or lubricated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
The sliding flange C may, by the action of sleeve or nut G, be forced out toward the solid flange B, thus clamping and securing the spokes which have been adjusted between said flan ges.
The axle-collar J, adjoining the interior annular flange, H, upon sleeve G, prevents the latter from working loose, and also prevents the admission into the axle-box of dirt, dust, and sand from the inside of the wheel.
The outer end of the axle-box is protected by the cap I which covers the axle-nut.
My invention is simple, durable, inexpensive, and so easy of adjustment that any possible injury to the wheel may be quickly and easily repaired without the necessity of resorting to the assistance of skilled hands.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination of the hub or axle-box A, having permanent flange B, sliding flange C, and screw-threaded ends D E, the adjustable sleeve Gr, having interior flange, H, adapted to abut against the end of box A, the axle I, having aflange or shoulder, J, at one end adapted to abut against said flange H, and at the other end with a nut for securing it in said box, and the screw-cap F, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANCIS CULHAM.
