GRAIN-SEPARATOR.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, J. B. CRIST, of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Grain-Separator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal vertical and central section `of my invention. Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of same taken in the line a?, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists in a peculiar' arrangement of a fan, blast spout, riddle and screen, and discharge passages, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the desired work, to wit, the cleaning of grain or the separating it from all foreign substances is performed in a very expeditious and perfect manner and by a very economical device.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the case or box which incloses the working parts of the machine. B, represents a fan box placed in the upper part of the case or box, and B, is the fan placed therein, the shaft D, of which passes through the bottom of a projecting upper part F1, of the case and is stepped at a, the shaft extending down by the side of theA lower part F, of the case or box, as shownplainly in Fig. 1. In the upper part ofthe fan box B, an opening b, is made which forms a communication between the fan box and the interior of the case A.
At one side of the case or box A, there is a blast passage G, which communicates with the upper part E, of the vcase A, said blast passage having a hopper H, attached to one side of it. The lower part F 'of the case or box communicates with the upper part E, by a passage c, and within the part F, an inclined riddle I, is placed, said riddle being driven or having a proper shake motion communicated to it by an eccentric J, on shaft D. Below the riddle I, an inclined screen K, is placed, the screw being inclined more than the riddle and in an opposite position, as shown clearly inFig. l. To the under side Iof the screen K, a chute L, is attached, to carry olf cockle and other line and heavyimpurities. The screen K, is also operated from shaft D, by an eccentric YI.
The lower or depressed end of the riddle I, is directly over a vertical discharge passage cl, in the part E, of the case, and a discharge passage e is directly underneath the chute L. The lower end of the screen K, is opposite an openinO f, in the lower part of the blast passage (Jr, and there is an opening g, in the passage G, which conducts the grain on the riddle I, the blast passage Gr, being somewhat inclined or bent to effect such result. At the end of the projecting portion of the upper part E, of the case A, there is a discharge passage N, in which a pendent valve L, is placed, the lower end of said valve abutting against the lower end of an inclined side z', of the discharge passage N, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.
The operation is as follows z-Motion is given the shaft D, in any proper manner and a blast of air is generated in the passage G, and also through the lower part F, of the case A. The grain to be cleaned passes through or across the passage Gr, on the riddle I, through the opening g, and is subjected to a blast as it crosses said passage. The coarse foreign substances fall off the depressed end of the riddle I, into the passage cl, and are discharged from the case at the lower end of said passage, the grain passing through the riddle I, and falling on the screen K, and passing therefrom through the opening f, into the lower part of the passage G, where it is subjected to a second blast as it leaves said passage. The coclrle or fine heavy substances pass through the screen K, into the chute L, and are discharged through e. The screen and riddle are actuated by the eccentrics, J, M, and all fine dust and light impurities are drawn up by the blast into the upper part E, of the charged through B, which is the outlet of the fan box B. Impurities and light grain which are rather too heavy to be actuated or governed entirely by the blast, will by their inertia, which is due to their weight, be carried over and beyond the fan box, and into the spout N, the discharge from which is regulated by the valve h, which valve allows the contents of N, to escape without permitting air to pass up said spout. The `black arrows show the direction of the blast.
