Application June 17, 1944;,seria1 vo. 540,731
1 Claim. (01. sin-111i This invention relates to laundry device and has special reference to an attachment for ironing boards.
In the use of the usual household ironing board it is frequently desirable to iron pieces of considerable width such as skirts, sheets, dresses and the like. In the ironing of such wide articles they are apt to sweep on the floor unless some provision is made to prevent this and it is quite common, in the household practice, to place under the board a chair or the like to receive the parts of the article being ironed which depend from the ironing board.
The principal object of the present invention is, therefore, to provide an ironing board attachment or adjunct for the reception of the depending parts of an article to be ironed, the attachment being carried directly in the underside of the board.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having a fabric receptacle for such depending parts and wherein the construction is such that the receptacle can be removed for cleansing or replacement at will.
A third important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily attached to any ordinary ironing board.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ironing board equipped with this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view thereof with the fabric portion of the receptacle omitted, and with the legs also omitted, the view being to slightly larger scale than the preceding figures.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail section on the frame showing the detachable knob used to retain the fabric from slipping off, such frame.
In the embodiment of the view as herein described the device has been shown as applied to a folding ironing board having the board proper indicated at G, this board being supported at its rear end by substantially vertical legs V to which are hinged diagonal legs D. A brace B serves to prevent dropping of the forward end of the board as is quite common in devices or this character.
The invention itself includes a wire frame here shown as consisting of two pieces of wire. Beneath the board the ends of these wires are joined by a sleeve H), but, as will be presently understood, the device may be made of one piece of wire in which case the sleeve I0 is unneces- Sary.
From the junction of the two wires they curve outwardly and rearwardly to provide parallel portions I l which extend along beneath board G and are re-bent to provide parallel portions l2 lying close to the parallel portions ll.
Across each portion II and its corresponding portion l2 extends a clip l3 which is screwed to the underside of the board G by suitable screws 14.
From the forward ends of the portions [2 the wires are bent to again extend rearwardly as at I5 and these portions extend back quite close to the rear end of the board G.
From the rear ends of the portions 15 the wires are bent to extend again forwardly as at (6. The portions I6 lie parallel to and are spaced from the sides of the board It]. These portions l6 terminate forwardly close to the front end of the board G and each portion 16 has screwed on to its extremity a knob H which may be removed at will.
Now by means of this construction those parts beneath the board have a forward bracing formed by the sleeve I0 and a rearward bracing formed by the portions II and [2 in their rearward extension from the clips I3.
At I8 is a sheet of fabric or other suitable material having its ends hemmed as at l9 and provided on each side with a portion 20 doubled back and stitched to form a tube. These tubular portions 20 normally surround the portion [6 of the wire frame, said portions being simply slipped on to the portions l6 upon removal of the knobs H which are then replaced to prevent slipping of the fabric member from its supporting rods or wires. However, it is of course possible to remove this fabric portion whenever desired so that in the event it gets soiled or worn it may readily be taken off and washed or replaced by an unwom fabric.
Obviously if the device is made from a single piece of wire and the sleeve Ill omitted the construction will be substantially the same since the curved part at the forward ends of the portions ll of the wire will have the same forward bracing efliectas thesleeve ID. V g
It is, of course, to lbeinnderstood that the wire frame is made of a wire which is of sufiicient stifiness and size and that the fabric member I8 may be made of any desired material.
In using the invention it will be obvious from the drawings that a skirt or sheet or other article placed on the board G will have its depending portions securely supported in'the fabric bag or trough l8 and that, by the spacing of the sides of the trough from the sides of the board, the article being ironed may be shifted across the board at will without interference.
What is claimed is:
In combination with an ironing board, a onepiece wire frame having re-bent portions forming spaced parallel legs engaging against the underside of said board and having spaced parallel terminal portions extending along the sides of said board insspaced relation thereto jsaid legs and parallel portions extending longitudinally of the board, clips screwed to the underside of the board and straddling re-bent leg portions of the frame intermediate their ends, and an apron secured at its sides to said terminal portions and depending beneath said board.
ASTELLE MONTALBANO.
