Description
oct. 16, 1945i Zinesses H. COHEN TOWER OR MAST CONSTRUCTION Filed April 4', 1944 INVENToR. l Harold Cohen Patented Oct. 16, 1945 hisinventionl relates to fabrication of towers,
masts andl analogous structures.
VW{Ihe principal object Yof the invention ,is the provision of means whereby component parts may be transported fromshop to eldand be.
quickly,A easily vand effectually connected with each other to form structures of the character mentioned for use where wanted. Also, to enable such structures to be dismantled so that the component parts may be removed and stored in comparatively small space when not in use.
Other objects of the invention will appear when the following specification is read in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in Which- Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a portion of a tower or mast embodying the features of the invention, some parts being broken away and shown partly in section and parts being juxtaposed to illustrate certain features of the fabrication.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a side view showing certain parts of the construction.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on' the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a side elevational View of a portion of the tower or mast to illustrate the possible use and arrangement of guys.
Fig, 6 is a View similar to Fig. 3, but showing a modification.
Fig. '7 is a sectional view taken on the line I--l of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 shows a further modification.
In the drawing, by way of example, there is shown components of a tower or mast. The structure may be of any height and of any forma.- tion in cross section, the same being triangular in the present instance. The tower or mast is fabricated in accordance with the invention by means oi' devices and structura1 elements prefabricated in a shop and used with certain other elements which are provided to be integrated with such prefabrications to form the tower or mast.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 5vof the drawing, it will be apparent the tower or mast includes three supports or legs II! each consisting of sections II arranged end to end. These sections II and therefore the legs are rigidly connected to each other by means of the present invention as follows.
Tubular members I2 of similar size and shape are ridigly connected to each other by tie bars S" PATENT EGF-,FICE 2,387,120?? 1 .Jf i" Y TOWER 0R MAs'r coNsTnUorI'N-f l w l" Vnamid-cohen,ltiiahtiiffiv.u;'e7v f. Application Aprilkfi, 1944*; seria1 Ndszaiss I Y2 claims. (crise-26) A Y www |13. 'lilach member I2 is round in cross-section and each tie bar is inthe form of'a channel iron of .suitable-length. The bars I3`'are r` secured to the members AHI2 as bylwelding `to 'rigidly hold the members in spaced vvrelation-dto eachifother, the parts forming a'. triangular unit Illprefabricatedin the shop, the sameY nbeing f. best 'seen' in Fig. 2. A -suitable number of these units I4 are used according to the height of the 4tower or mast desired.
Each of the leg sections II is round in crosssection to fit into a tubular member I2 and said section II may be of any preferred length although all sections Il are advantageously of the same length. Each leg section' I I has collars I5 xedly secured thereto near the opposite ends respectively. Of course, each of the lowermost and uppermost leg sections require a single collar. Each collar I5 has a radially disposed apertured lug I6. The lug I6 of the lower collar of each leg section II has connected therewith a rigid link or connector I1 by means of a pivot bolt or the like I8, so that the link may have pivotal movement. All of the links are applied in the shop to remain attached to the respective leg sections. Each link I1 is made from a single metal strip bent upon itself into U-shape to provide equal members I9 joined by a bight 20. The members I9 have registering holes 2| in the opposite ends thereof and those at one end of the link remote from the bight 20 to receive the bolt I8. A ller block 22 is secured between the members I9 and a hole 23 extends through the members I9 and the block 22 to receive one end of a guy line or the like 24 when the tower or mast is erected.
In erecting a tower or mast, a group of leg sections II, three in number, have a unit I4 applied thereto in which the upper ends of the sections II are received in the tubular members I2 respectively, with the collars I5 abutting the lower' ends of the members I2. A second group of leg sections II are inserted into the aforesaid members I2, respectively, with the lower collars I5 thereof abutting the upper ends of the members I2. The links I'I are then swung into engagement with the lugs I6 of the lower leg sections II, bringing the bight 2i) of each link into engagement with the related lug I6. A bolt 25 or the like is removably inserted in the registering holes 2l in members I9 near the bight 2! and the hole in the lug I ii. In this manner one group of leg sections II is rigidly connected with another group in which the leg sections II are arranged end to end, the collars I5 abutting the Il by virtue of the holes 23, as shown in Fig. 5.
In Figs. 6 and 7, a modification is shown in which a lug 30 of U-shape is used in lieu of the solid lug- L'nlrlstheA lug 30 oneeach-iupper collar I5 hasfatubular nllerguiece .f3ivwe1dediineplace to receive a plain bolt 32 which engages the bight 20 of the link I1.
