NITED STATES RIVERIUS MARSH, OF NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY.
LIBRARY-LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,601, dated March 8, 1881.
Application filed July 15, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RIVERIUS MARSH, of New Brunswick and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Library-Lamps and Adjustable Fixtures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to produce a library-lam p and adjustable fixture which will be easily adjusted and more convenient and economical than the library-lamps and fixtures now in use. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1. is a sectional elevation of my improved library-lamp and adjustable fixture.
Fig. 2 is a view showing the parts disconnected. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lamp and fixture, showing two reservoirs or founts and two burners.
I construct my library-lamp and adjustable fixture of metal or other suitable material.
A is an ornamental lyre-shaped support for the lamp or lamps. B is the lamp or oil fount. O is the burner. D is the chimney. E is the shade or reflector. Fis the shade-ring. G is a combined chimney-protector, metal cap, or smoke-bell and ring-weight. H is a metal cap, which may be made part of the chimneyproteotor or separate from it. When a short chimney is used on the lamp the metal cap H I is a combined smokebell, pulley-frame, and suspending-hook. J are the chains connecting the lower part of the fixture with the suspending-hook. When a long chimney is used on the lamp the metal cap H is removed and the pulley-frame and suspending-hook I acts as a smoke-bell. The smoke-bell or metal cap H is made with openings in the bottom edge to allow a limited amount of heated air to escape.
The ornamental lyre A is attached to the shade-rin g F by screws or rivets, as shown at F, Fig. 1. This shade-ring receives the neck of the shade at bottom of the ring, the shade being held in position by thumb-screws in the usual manner. Near the top of the shadering, inside, are hooks or eyes to fasten the chains to.
The combined chimneyprotector, smokebell, and ringweight G is an ornamental crownshaped ring, the lower part fitting into the shadering F. Rising above and attached to or resting on this ring-weight is a hell or dome shaped piece, G, with openings in the sides. The object and use of this hell or dome shaped piece are to allow the heated air to escape from the burner, and the dome or cap H prevents the light from being blown out by a downward current of air; and it protects the chimney from breakage, and also acts as a smoke-bell when using a short chimney. In this combined smoke-bell audring-weight G, near its outer diameter, are two or more rings or eyes for the chains or cords to pass under or through, or to attach the chains to, the ring being made of sufficient weight to balance the fixture in any position it may be placed in.
The combined pulley-frame, smoke-bell, and sus1.)ending-hook I is made ornamental, it is dome or hell shaped, with a hook or ring on thetop to suspend it by, and it has two or more pulley-wheels near its outer edge.
The chains or cords J are the same as those in general use.
All the above parts described are shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
WVhen two or more lamps or burners are used in one fixture the same general arrangement can be used, or a light metal. frame, J, can be attached to the shade-ring in place of the lyre-shaped support, and, passing down, support the burner-supply L, to which is attached the oil fount or reservoir or other means of supply. I prefer to supply my fixture, when two or more burners are used, from one or more founts made similar to those now used on what is known as the student lamp, and shown at M, Fig. 3.
The shade or reflector E can be made in various forms and of various materials.
Operation: Connect thelibrary-lamp and adjust-able fixture together by attaching the chains J to the shade-ring F, then carry the chains up over the pulley-wheels in the piece I, and then down to the combined smoke-bell and ring-weight G, where it is attached. Fill the oil founts or reservoir with petroleum or kerosene oil or other liquors to be used. It is then ready for operation, and it can be lowered or raised at pleasure by simply pulling down on the lower part of the fixture or raising up on it, audit will remain in any position it is placed in by the action of the weight G and the friction on the parts shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a library-lamp and adjustable fixture, of the combined chimneyprotector, smoke-bell, and ring-weight G and the smoke-bell, pulley-frame, and suspendinghook I, substantially as described.
2. The combined smoke-bell, pulley-frame, wheels, and suspending-hook I, constructed substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, in a library-lamp and adjustable fixture, of the following elements: the lyre-shaped support A, the lamp B, the burner C, the chimney D, the shade or reflector E, the shade-ring F, the combined chimneyprotector and ring-weight G, the metal-cap smoke-bell H, the combined smoke-bell, pulley-frame, and suspending-hook I, and chains J, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 4. The combined chimney-protector, smoke bell, and ring-weight G, constructed with the chimney-protector attached to or resting on it, and with the smoke-bell or cap H on top of the said chimney-protector, substantially as described.
