Description

p 1945. w. J. DROSKI 2,385,064
S AFETY DELIVERY LINK SLIDE Filed July 17, 1944 Z] WaHer J DrosKi Patented Sept. 18, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The present invention relates to a safety delivery link slide and more particularly to such a device which is particularly well adapted for use in conjunction with type setting machines.
The primary objects of the instant invention are to provide a device of the general character above indicated which is well adapted for use in preventing jamming of matrices during their delivery from the slide, thereby precluding nonoperational use of the machine otherwise resulting from the necessity of repairing or tearing down and thereafter re-assembling jammed mechanism; to provide such a device whereby the operator of the machine may not be injured should he inadvertently .put one or more of his digits adjacent the receiving end of the delivery slide; to provide such a device which is adaptable for use as a safety factor in connection with machines of a character other than type setting machines; to provide such a device which is highly efficient in use; to provide such a device which may be readily and conveniently installed; and, to provide such a device which is reasonably economical in manufacture.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view in one of its normal reciprocating positions as is indicated in full and dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof showing the driving member in an abnormal reciprocating position; v
Figure 3 is a side elevational view showing the device when acting in its capacity of a safety factor; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary top plan view of the device showing the same in its position as it is shown in Figure 1.
Referring then .to the drawing wherein like parts of the device are designated by the same numerals in the several views, the safety delivery link slide there shown comprises an elongated reciprocating driving member, generally designated l and an elongated reciprocating driven member, generally designated H, the driving member [0 being provided with a laterally disposed pin [2 fixedly secured thereto at one end thereof in any desired fashion which pin is adapted for attachment to any suitable motivating means, not shown.
The elongated reciprocating driving member ID is likewise provided with a laterally disposed stud l3 intermediate its length and with a longitudinally disposed slot l4 at its end opposite the end to which the pin I2 is affixed.
The elongated reciprocating driven member II is likewise provided with a laterally disposed stud 15 having a head IS, the shank of which stud is disposed within the longitudinally disposed slot l4, and a helical contraction spring I 6 is secured at one end to the stud I3 and at 5 its other end to the stud I5.
The end of the elongated driving member in opposite the pin [2 is provided with a cammed upper surface I! as viewed in the several figures herein shown which cammed surface and the head l6 of the stud l5 provide the safety factor.
In normal operation, the driving member HI and driven member H reciprocate in unison as is indicated in dotted lines and by the double headed arrow in Figure 1, which reciprocating unison movement is governed by the tension of the helical contraction spring.
However, in instances wherein the end 25 of the driven member ll engages an overload of any character, the driving member [0 moves from its position shown in Figure 1 toward its position shown in full lines in Figure 2 and ultimately to its position shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 and in full lines shown in Figure 3 whereupon the cammed surface I! of the driving member it) releases the helical contraction spring It as indicated in Figure 3, effecting a cessation of the reciprocating movement of both the driving member ID and driven member I I.
As above indicated, the device herein shown and described is particularly well adapted for use as a safety factor in conjunction with type setting machines but it is likewise adaptable for use in connection with machines of other character, and while but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that certain details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as the same is defined by the following 0 claim.
I claim:
A safety delivery link slide comprising a reciprocable driving member and a parallelly reciprocable driven member, said driving member having a stud adjacent one end thereof and a bifurcated cam at its other end, said driven member having a stud disposed within the bifurcated cammed end, and a contraction spring secured at one end to one stud and detachably secured at its other end to the stud disposed within the bifurcated cammed end whereby an engagement 'by one end of the driven member with an overload causes the spring to be released from the stud disposed within the bifurcated cammed end 55 during the driving pull of the driving member.
