9 Claims. (o1. s 151) This invention relates to pumps of the deformable chamber type. and,. more particularly, to a diaphragm pump having a valve carried by the diaphragm. v
The object of the invention is to provide a bilge pump or extreme ruggedness and simplicity, the pump being manually operable with a minimum of effort but having: a largeoutput. More particularly, itisintended to provide a. pump of type described having a main chamber dividedinto upper and lower compartments. by a vertically movable diaphragm, an operating assembly for man rocatingv the diaphragm, a flapper Valve in. the inlet to the lower compartment, a'similarvalve carried. by the.- diaphrag'm, and a. third valve in the outlet of the. upper compartment. so that liquid may be drawn into. the pump andthen. exhausted through an outlet. lineextending towell above'the level ofithe pump.
Another object. is to provide a diaphragm pump having an external operating assembly, including handles afiixedlto a common shaft, the shaft being packed and extending through'part of the upper compartment offthe pumpchamber, there being a crank and rod'assembly encased entirely Within the upper compartment connecting, the shaft'and diaphragm so that, when the handles are oscil lat'ed', the diaphragm is reci'procated. in the chamber. In this assembly, it is intended to provide the pump with an upper chamber capable of having'c'onsid'erable pressure developed therein for exhausting water under pressure through the outlet connection and nevertheless having leakproof seals between the inner and-outer portions of theoperating assembly.

Drive shaft 22 is rotatably mounted in a tubular fibre shaft log 2| cut away at its mid-portion to accommodate the upper end of connecting rod is and having its exterior tightly fitted in a horizontal rectangular slot, l s, in upper body I so as to form a leak-proof connection. The bore of shaft log 2| is enlarged at its ends to receive graphite packing 23 and threaded to engage the exterior threads of bronze bushings 25 held by lock nuts 24.
At the end of shaft 22 a handle collar 26 is fitted and keyed by keys 35. A handle is bolted to a tongue 28 on each collar by bolts 29 so that as the handles are oscillated, shaft 22 is rocked to reciprocate diaphragm l3 vertically.
In operation the lower end of the pump is placed in the bilge of a boat or the vessel to be pumped out, or connected to the liquid to be pumped out by a suitable pipe or hose joined to intake connection 4. When the handles are swung downwardly diaphragm I3 is raised with its flapper valve held shut, and liquid is drawn in to the interior of the lower body. When the handles are raised, diaphragm I3 is forced downwardly so that intake flapper valve I2 is closed but the diaphragm flapper valve is open so that the liquid initially drawn into exterior of the lower body now lies above the diaphragm l3. On the next down stroke of handles, diaphragm I3 is raised so as to force out liquid from the interior of the upper compartment through the outlet flapper valve and on through outlet connection II. It should be noted that when diaphragm I3 is driven downward, back-sucking through the outlet is prevented by the flapper valve on sloping top 38.
.Although the inventive structure has been described and shown in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific form shown but is intended to cover mechanical equivalents and obvious modifications within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a bilge or the like pump, a housing enclosing a chamber, a flexible diaphragm extending across said chamber and dividing the same into lower and upper compartments, said diaphragm having its edges aflixed to said housing and having an aperture therethrough, said housing having inlet and outlet apertures for said lower and upper compartments, check valves operatively controlling said apertures, and means for reciprocating said diaphragm, comprising a drive shaft extending through the upper portion of said housing with the end portions of said shaft lying externally of said chamber and an intermediate portion of said shaft lying within the chamber, bearing means on said housing supporting said shaft for oscillation, a crank arm rigidly affixed to said intermediate portion of said shaft, linkage means connecting said diaphragm and said crank arm, and means on said end portions of said shaft for oscillating said shaft,
2. The combination claimed in claim 1, and packing in said bearing means, whereby to establish a substantially leakproof connection between the interior and exterior portions of said operating means.
3. The combination claimed in claim 1, said linkage including a lost-motion connection between said crank arm and said diaphragm,
4. The combination claimed in claim 1, said linkage means comprising a pair of lugs having their lower ends rigidly secured to said diaphragm on opposite sides, respectively, of the diaphragm aperture, and lost motion connection means between the upper ends of said lugs and the free end of said crank arm.
5. The combination claimed in claim 1, said linkage means comprising a pair of lugs having eyelets in their upper ends and having their lower ends rigidly secured to said diaphragm on opposite sides, respectively, of the diaphragm aperture, the free end of said crank arm lying between said eyelets and having a slot therethrough registering with said eyelets and being elongated lengthwise of said crank arm, and a yoke bar extending through said eyelets and said slot.
6. In a bilge or the like pump, a housing enclosing a chamber and having a substantially cylindrical side wall, a substantially fiat bottom wall, an inlet aperture extending through said bottom wall, a flap valve having one side thereof secured to the inner side of said bottom wall and overlying said inlet aperture, a substantially dishshaped flexible diaphragm extending across said chamber and having the edges thereof affixed to said side wall, said diaphragm having a central aperture, a flap valve having one side thereof secured to the upper side of said diaphragm and overlying the diaphragm aperture, means for reciprocating said diaphragm axially of said chamher, a top wall affixed to said side wall and having an outlet aperture therethrough, and a flap valve having one side thereof affixed to said top wall and overlying the outlet aperture, the upper portion of said side wall being cut-away on one side thereof, said top wall comprising a first sheet of material secured to the edges of the side wall at the non cut-away portion thereof and a second sheet of material having the edges thereof respectively secured to the first sheet and to the edges of the side wall at the cut-away portion thereof whereby to constitute an inclined plate, said outlet aperture being through the inclined plate.

In a bilge or the like pump, a housing enclosing a chamber, a flexible diaphragm extending across said chamber and dividing the same into upper and lower compartments, said diaphragm having its edges aflixed to said housing and having an aperture therethrough, said housing having an inlet aperture for the lower compartment, a check valve operatively controlling said aperture, means for reciprocating said diaphragm, said housing having a top construction comprising a substantially cylindrical side wall having the upper portion thereof cut-away at one side thereof, a first half-moon shaped disc having a curved edge and a straight edge, the curved edge being affixed to the upper edges of the non-cut-away portion of the side wall, a second half-moon shaped disc having a curved edge and a straight edge, the curved edge being affixed to the upper edges of the cut-away portion of the side wall whereby to constitute an inclined plate, the straight edges of the discs being joined, said inclined plate having an outlet aperture therethrough forming an outlet aperture for the upper compartment, and a check valve for controlling said outlet aperture,

In a construction as claimed in claim 7, wherein said outlet check valve comprises a flap valve having one side thereof secured to the upper surface of said inclined plate and overlying said outlet aperture, and an outlet fitting comprising a pair of substantially parallel, triangular plates 10 having their diagonal edges respectively joined to the face of said inclined plate on each side of said outlet aperture, a rectangular plate having opposed side edges respectively joined to the top said inclined plate on each side of said outlet aperture, a rectangular plate having opposed side edges respectively joined to the top edges of said triangular plates and the rear edge thereof joined to said inclined plate, and a rectangular front plate having an annular aperture therethrough, the edges of said front plate being respectively secured to the front edges of said triangular, rectangular, andinclined plates, and an annular tube affixed to said front plate in registry edges of said triangular plates and the rear edge 15 with the aperture therethrough.
