Description
B'uffing Pad. 1
l No. 288,201; 'Patented March 1,1881.
` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBAN ANDREN, OF BEVERLY, ASSIGNOR IO FREEMAN WINSLOW, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUFFING-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,201, dated March 1 1881.
Application filed December 20, 1880.
l by declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanyingdrawings, and toletters or gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements on the patent granted to Josiah W. Rogers on the 18th day of May, 1880, No. 227,839, for improvements in bufting-pads for boot and shoe soles; and it consists in making the padcovering ot' one single circular piece of cloth, or other suitable material, the outer annular portion of which .is crimped so as to form an annular crimped ring, which, on account of its expansive nature, is well adapted to be inserted between the clam pin g-j aws ofthe holder used for this purpose, and as the whole padcovering is entirely'seamless, its strength and durability are considerably increased over the former ones, which were, made of two pieces united together by stitching their edges.
Another advantage of my improved padcovering is7 that its crimped annular ringforms a re-enforced surface to be held between the clampingjaws of the holder, and thus the pad can be held more firmly without liability to twisting during its quick rotation on the spindle ot' the buffing-machine when in use. After the annular portion of the seamless padcovering has been crimped its central circular under side is provided with an abrasive s/ubstance, such as powdered emery or equivalent material, that is attached to it by means of glue or other adhesive cement, in asimilar manner to making emerycloth or sand-paper.
On the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a bottom view of the pad-covering (No model.)
as laid out fiat. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the same after being` crimped, and Fig. 3 represents a sectional elevation of the same as attached to the clamping-jaws of the holder.
Similar letters refer to similar parts Wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
c b represent the conic frusta of the usual pad-holder, and c is the packing onthe under side of the holder a, asusual.
d d represent the circular single-piece padcovering, the annular portion d of which is crimped and folded inward on the upper side, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose set forth. The under side of the central circular smooth part, d, is covered with emery, D, or other suitable abrasive substance, as and for the purpose set forth. In making these seamless padcoverings it is preferably intended to first crimp the annular rim df, and afterward apply the abrasive substance to the central uncrimped part thereof; Vbut I do not Wish to confine myself to this exact manner of making .the pad'coverings, as the abrasive material may be irst applied to the central part, d, and the annular rim d' crimped afterward, if so desired.
e is the pad within the pocket, as usual. Having thus fully described the nature and ,construction of my invention, I Wish to secure ALBAN ANDRN.
