DEVICE FOR REGULATING PRESSURE IN MACHINE RoLLERs Filed April 29, 1943 IN V EN TOR. 560C963 fidb Patented Aug. 7, 1945 UNIT D'STATEs P -Ts r DEVICE FOR REGULATING PRESSURE IN MACHINE ROLLERS V George Babicz, Chicago, Ill. Application April 29, 1943, Serial No. 484,997 2 Claims (01. 101--351) Broadly the present invention relates to means for regulating, that is for increasing for clecreasing, the pressure between. a plurality of rollers in various types of machines. I
More specifically the present invention relates to the printing machines and has for its object the provision of a device whereby the pressure between fountain roller and ink spreading roller may be regulated with the greatest degree of accuracy and precision.
A still further object of the present invention is the provision of means in a printing machine to bodily move the fountain roller to or away from the printing roller thereby increasing or decreasing the pressure therebetween and as a consequence transferring lesser or larger amountr of ink, as may be desirable, from the fountain roller to the printing roller.
With the above, general objects in view and others that will appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in a part of this applicarefer to corresponding parts throughout the several views I Fig. 1 is a cross-sectional view on a vertical plane through a plurality of shafts, supporting a plurality of rollers, with rollers shown in: ele-' vation and in a cooperating position;
I 4, l6 and I! rotate into the directions indicated by arrows inFig. 1. Roller'lfi' is adapted to carry upon itsv periphery printing impressions which, when inked ,by. roller ID, are transferred upon the paper when thesame isfed. and moves between said rollers It and 11.
, It is desirable to regulate the pressure between I rollers l0 and M in order to regulate the ink film upon roller In for the purpose of transferring ink therefrom to roller [6 in a lesser or larger degree, asmaybe desirable and dependentupon the various factors, such: as the quality of paper .which is being printed or. the nature, qualityof consistency of the ink in trough l2. This object is accomplished by means of a pressure regulating devices, each set, upon standards 20, which directly carry shafts l8 andiq.v This. device includes a pair ofv spaced guiding rails 2|, set upon the inner faces of standards ,Zlland disposed transversely thereof, with1 one ends, projecting beyond the adjacent marginal edgeflof standards Said rails are affixed to standardsilhby means of screws22, and constitute guidingi me'ans bars 25. a
for 'plate 23, one receivable within each pair of said guiding rails 2l. One end of plate 23 is cut out longitudinallyand centrally thereof for .defining slot 24, with the resultant pair of edge I Toprevent lateral shifting of plate23 an'dbars 2.5, both are grooved as at 26 to receive therewithflin correspondingly shaped flanges 21,. by virtue Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the present I device and transversely of, roller-supporting shafts; and a t 7 Fig. 3 is anend view of a pair of shaft-supporting and pressure regulating devices, one being shown in elevation and the other in cross-section. Referring in detail to the present drawing, the same illustrates a relative juxtaposition ofa plurality of rollers, including a fountain roller Ill,
which is partly immersed in ink II contained in trough [2. Roller I0 is set upon shaft l3; Ink spreading'roller l4 set upon shaft I5 is in a horizontal relative position with roller l0 and contacts therewith for the purpose of wiping off the excess ink upon roller 10 and uniformly spreadupon shafts l8 and I9, respectively. Rollers I0,
of which arrangement plate 23Qand bars 25 :are retained within guiding rails- 21, but are permitted to make longitudinal sliding movement.
Bearings 28, which support shaft'l5 atboth of its ends, are set. within slots and between bars 25. At; the outerends ofv bearings 28' arms 29 upwardly project and are pivoted j for :angular shifting movement uponpivots'30 carried by the upper bars 25. Arms '29 have horizontal extensions 3|, thelatter carrying upwaridly pro- J'ecting arms 32, thelatter being laterally bent .and .having their free ends bifurcated as at 33.
Journaled within said bifurcated ends 33 of arms 32, as at 34 are rods 35. The opposite ends ofsaid rods are threadedto'receive a nut lock- 36, The threaded end portion of each rod ,35 rests within the bifurcated end of bar. 31 andlis there held and roller I4 is indicated by dotted lines upon Fig. 2.
Bearings 40, within which shaft I3 is set for rotation, are integrally formed with the two oppositely disposed plates 23.
Plate 23, longitudinally and centrally thereof and on its edge bordering slot 24 is provided with 1 socket 4| to receive therewithin a coil spring 42, which z bearsaagainststhe side cf bearing 28 and normally urges the 'same away from that-edge of plate 23. Thus when nut lock 36 is released,
that is when its contactual engagement with ba'r' 31 is loosened, spring 42 automatically shiftsbear ing 28 away from bearing '40, causing iangiilar '15 Hi to or away from printing roller I5 and regushifting of arm 29, upon pivot 30, as wll as arm 32 towards said bar 31, thereby decreasing the pressure between the two rollers 40 and J4 Thereupon wing nut 38 is adjusted so as to main tain rods 35 in a rigid adjusted position'with respect to bar 3.1, which.in turn will maintain .thetworollers' l and M in a 'rigi'd,irelatively adjjusted'position. 'To reverse'the operation and shitting'ef bearings 28,"that:is for bringing'roller f4 "towards .roller T0 to increase the ,pressure "therebetween, nut -38 is .loosened, r'o'di35 is shiited into thezopposite directiomithat isxaway "from bar 331, which operation ;"shifts bearings ",28 towards bearings "4llpan'd against the tension "6f springs 42,1and' when" the desiredfpressure between rollers f0 and" I4 .was "brought about nut loelf36is .screwe'd .upon 'rdd3 "and towards -wing "nut.38 for the purpose 'o'f'ilockin .ro'd'35 .to .bar "3]iin1'the" newly adjusted relative position 'with i'respect to bar 31. C'I'hisoperationnf rods35' shifts 't' bearings"28 and 'roller Mitowards ro1ler"l 0, and
against the Ztension oftco'il. spring 42, and .increases the pressure between" said rollers.
'"Fromflthe hereina'bove description it wil "be seen! that'the excess amount ofdnk .taken up by :rdller f0 will 'be' wipedoffi therefrom as the'sa'me "rotatespastfrollen f4. .It is oftentimes desirable to regulate"the;.pres- "sure between fountain 'roller "f0 and printing "roller" l6. 'IForthis purposenneanshas beenpro- "vided" whereby'riiller I |'0,"roller"l 4 an'd' plates "23 may be rbodily "moved on :hor'izontal "plane, "for the purpose offbringing"fountainfroller 1'0 to "or (away "from, printing roller [6. "This means in- "cludes af'horizontalbarfl 3 inte'grally'tonnedwith "and j horizontally projecting from the marginal edge of each standard 20, andbelow the Tower- 'most "guiding rail 2 I. "Each of'sai'dbars *4 3 has an 'upwardly "projecting 'vertical *bifurcated extensionfl; which isin alinement' with'fplate"23 6 "andin'iront of its adjacentwertical edge. Screw "4'5 rigidlyafflxedtoyplate' 23 carries nut lock -Mi "contacting "with*one"face of the "bifurcated end of extension 44. Wingnut "=41 completes "the "structure. By"shifting nut lock 46 an'd-wing'nut rollers I0 and [4, with the entire mechanism for increasing the pressure therebetween, and hereinabove described, are likewise bodily shifted, without in any manner disturbing the contactual 6 adjusted relation and pressure between rollers I0 and I 4. As hereinabove indicated guiding rails 2| by virtue of their flanges 21 permit 1ongitudinal sliding movement of plate 23 and bars 125, "preventing however any il ateral shifting -*-thereof. r I i l As is seen in Fig. 1 printing roller l6 remains Ito the side of the vertical transverse axis of inkv.ing roller '10,, which juxtaposition of the two ,irollers makes it possible to shift inking roller :,late :the contactual pressure therebetween by means last hereinbove described. 'While'there is described herein a preferred .zembo'diment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to .be understood that minorchangesimay "*be"made therein without departing from the "spirit: and sc0pe 'of the-invention as claimed. What I'claim'asnew is: p
