SPRING-STILT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,042, dated February 22, 1881.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HERRING- TON, of Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Spring-Stilts, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal section, showing all the parts in place. Fig. 2 shows the manner of using the stilts, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the means by which the spring is adjusted.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention consists of a stilt employing an adjustable spring, which may be used at the will of the operator for leaping great distances and heights, and for walkin g or runnin g with great rapidity and ease. Each stilt is formed of two strong cases, A A', ot suitable length, and of such relative size that the case A will inclose the case A', and move upon it freely. The case A is provided with a step or foot-rest, a, and with strong straps o b', one for the ankle and one for the knee, and with a spring-trigger, c, which passes through hole c, and is operated by the cord j passingup through the loop o', near the top or closed end ofthe case. The inside case, A', is provided at the bottom with the inwardly-projecting foot B, calculated to balance the weight which always comes on the inside of the stilt, and has the holes d d', or similar catches, in it, with which the end of the spring-trigger o engages, and is provided also with the loop g (shown in dotted lines,) to which the cord j' is attached. The closed ends of the cases A and A' are provided with the screw-socketed heads n n' of the spindle D and tube E.

The spindle D is provided with the holes .fr throughout its length for the pins x w", and the tube E is provided with the slot t' extending nearly its whole length.

In assembling the parts the spindle D and tube E are inserted into the coiled spring H, and the pin x' inserted through the slot into the rst hole in the spindle, and these parts thus united are then to be placed inside the cases A A and fastened by the screws h h. The stilts are now ready to be used if it is desired to use them with the spring at full tension; but before putting them on the spring should be compressed by bringing the cases together so that the trigger locks with the lowest catch or hole e. rlhe stilts are then to be firmly strapped on, and when it is desired to employ the spring a slightpull on the cord j will release the trigger, and the recoil of the spring will tend to liftthe operator high in the air, according to the size and strength of the spring.

When it is desired to remove the stilts, by pulling upon the cord j the spring may be compressed, and case A forced down upon case A' until the trigger engages with the catch e again.

If it is not desired to use the spring at full tension, it may be adjusted at any desired strength by compressing the upper part of it and retaining it bythe pin passing through the holes in the rod D.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters iPaten t- 1. The spring-stilt herein described, formed of the cases A and A', inclosing the spring H as and for the purposes specied.

2. The case A, provided with the foot-rest a, and the rod D, secured on the inside, in cornbination with spring H, and the case A', having the slotted tube E,substantially as described. Q

3. The case A, provided with the foot-rest a and the spring-trigger, in combination with the spring H, and case A', having triggercatches, substantially as specitied.

4. The case A, provided with the straps and the foot-rest and the spring-trigger, in combination with case A', having the projecting foot and the coiled spring, the case A' being provided with the cord, substantially as specitied.

5. The case A. provided with the rod D, having the holes x, in combination with the spring H and the case A', having the slotted tube E, substantially as described.
