This invention relates to 'an attachment for scissors or shears of the. type commonly used'by barbers for cutting hair.

Scissors of this character have their handle arms provided respectively'iw ith a thumb ring and a finger ring whichreceive the thumb and one'of the fingers of the barbers hand when operating the scissors. When trimming the hair on a persons head so as to shade the same from a short length at the side of the head upwardly to a progressively greater length toward the crown of the head, the use of such a pair of scissors is extremely tiring because the thumb I and finger of the barber have to work close together and at an unfavorable leverage of the respective thumb and finger.

It is the object of this invention to provide an attachment for standard scissors whereby the barber while operating the scissors for tapering the com will hold the scissors with his thumb and finger spaced apart a greater distance in the direction circumferentially of the axis of the scissor blades and thus permit him to perform such hair trimming or cutting operation comfortably and without fatigue.

With this end in view this invention consists generally in providing an auxiliary thumb ring which is arranged on the circumferential outer side of the main or regular thumb ring and mounted by means of a bracket on the respective thumb ring arm of the scissors.

In the following description the same reference characters indicate like parts in both figures of the drawing.

As shown in Fig. 1 the scissors or shears on which this invention may be advantageously employedcomprises a pair of crossed levers I0, II which are pivotally connected about midway of their length by a screw I2 and provided on one pair of their corresponding arms with cooperating blades I3, I4 while the other corresponding arms are provided respectively with a finger ring or loop I5 and a thumb ring or loop I 6.

Assuming that the scissors shown in this figure is used by the right hand of a barber his thumb is placed in the upper or thumb ring I6 and one or the other of his fingers, but usually the third or ring finger, is placed in the finger ring I5.

When using the scissors in this manner the thumb and finger of the barber are comparatively close to each other and the blades are operated with a relatively low leverage, thereby causing the thumb and finger of the barber to become cramped and fatigued, particularly when tapering up the hair of a customer which often 'requires considerable time.

The attachment for shears or scissorswhich' forms the subject of this invention and whereby haircutting for tapering up is made easier and avoids cramping is preferably constructed as follows:

The numeral I'I represents an auxiliary thumb ring or.loop which normally is arranged transversely relative to the thumb ring It and adjacent to the outer lateral side of the same so that these two rings are arranged circumferentially side by side and the length of their radius from the pivot screw I2 is nearly the same.

This auxiliary finger ring is detachably connected with the scissors arm I8 which carries the main thumb ring It by means of a holder or fastening device which may be variously constructed but is preferably made as follows:

The numeral I9 represents the bracket or shank of a clamping device which projects radially and laterally inward from the inner end or part of the auxiliary ring I'I toward the lever arm I8 and formed integrally with said ring. At its inner end this shank or bracket is provided with two clamping jaws 20, 2I the opposing inner sides of which are grooved, as shown at 22 in Fig. 2, and receive the opposite sides of the thumb ring arm I8. One of these jaws, for. example the jaw 20, is formed integrally with the bracket I9 and provided with a shoulder face 23 and the other clamping jaw is made of a separate piece and provided with a bearing face 24 engaging with the shoulder of the companion jaw 20. drawn toward each other and against opposite sides of the lever arm I8 by a screw 25, the head of which preferably bears against the jaw ZI and the thread of which engages with a threaded opening in the jaw 20.

When this attachment is applied in this manner to ordinary shears or scissors the distance circumferentiallybetween the finger ring I5 and the auxiliary thumb ring I7 is substantially greater than the distance circumferentially between the finger ring I 5 and the regular or main thumb ring I6, thereby enabling the barber to obtain a better leverage on the blades and perform the operation of tapering up' the hair while cutting the same with greater ease and facility and thus avoiding the cramping and fatigue which has been expe- These two jaws are 1. An attachment for a pair of scissors having crossed levers which are pivotally connected and provided on one of their corresponding arms with cooperating blades and on their other corresponding arms with a main thumb ring and a finger ring adapted to receive the thumb and a finger of the operator, said attachment comprising an auxiliary thumb ring adapted to be arranged on .the circumferentially outer side of the main thumb ring, and means .for detachably connecting said thumb ring with the arm of the'main thumb ring including a bracket having two clamping jaws which, grip opposite sides of the thumb ring arm and one or which is formed integrally with said auxiliary thumb ring, and a screw connecting said Jaws.

An attachment for a pair of scissors having crossed levers which are pivotally connected and provided on one of their corresponding arms with cooperating blades and on their other corresponding arms with a main thumb ring and a finger ring adapted to receive the thumb and a finger of the operator, said attachment comprising an auxiliary thumb ring adapted to be arranged on the circumferentially outer side of the main thumb ring, and means for detachably connecting said auxiliary thumb ring with the arm which carries the main thumb ring including a bracket formed integrally with said auxiliary thumb ring and provided with a shoulder, two clamping jaws provided on their opposing sides with grooves adapted to receive opposite sides of the arm which carries said main thumb ring. and one of said jaws being formed integrally with said bracket and the other jaw having a bearing face engaging the shoulder on said bracket, and a screw connecting said jaws.
