WWW M@ Patented July 10, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SNAP FASTENER Walter H. Fitzgerald, Jr., Dallas, Tex.

Application November 24, 1943, Serial No. 511,587

1 Claim.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in snap fasteners, the principal object being to provide a snap fastener which will hold in a more positive manner than snap fasteners of present-day construction.

Another important obj ect of the invention is to provide a snap fastener, the component parts of which can be readily connected together and also just as readily disconnected without the likelihood that the disconnection can take place accidentally.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 represents a fragmentary top plan view showing a pair of complementary sheets connected together by the improved snap fastener.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Figure 3 ls a longitudinal sectional view through the receiving unit of the fastener.

Figure 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.

Figure 5 is a side elevational view of the fastener about to be engaged.

Figure 6 is a perspective view of the spring leaf.

Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the fastener consists of a receiving unit 5 and an inserted unit 6. The receiving unit 5 consists of a plate I having an upwardly and inwardly bent end portion describing a neck 8 and an inwardly disposed lip 9. The other end of the plate 5 is flanged upwardly as at II) and inwardly as at II to engage over and clamp against the reduced tail portion I2 of a spring leaf I3 which has its free end slightly curved upwardly as at I4 to bear against the top side of the lip 9 (see Figures 5 and 3). The tail portion I2 of the spring leaf I3 and the adjacent end of the plate 1 are formed with registering openings I5 in order that the unit 5 may be 4sewed as at I6 to fabric II.

The inserted unit 6 consists of a plate I8 having a hookdiead I9 at one end. This head I8 is a substantially 180 roll and is adapted to be hooked over the neck portion 8 and lip,9 and rotated counterclockwise as viewed in Figure 5 to cause the hook I9 to ride into the unit 5 and to engage the lip 9, whereupon the spring leaf I3 will bear down on this end of the plate I8 and prevent displacement of the same from the unit 5.

The plate I8 has an opening 20 to permit sewing as at 2| of the unit 5 to a piece of fabric 22.

While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A snap fastener comprising a receiving unit, an inserted unit, said units having complementary inter-connectible hook portions, and aspring on the receiving unit for engaging the hook on the inserted unit to prevent disconnection of said hook, said receiving unit being provided with clamp means for holding the spring in positive
