This invention relates to new and useful improvements in aclamp wrench.
'More specifically, this invention proposes the construction of a, clamp wrench characterized by a stationary jaw fixed to a shank and a movable jaw slidably mounted on the shank with means on the shank for moving the movable jaw towards the fixed jaw in a manner to initially grip a member disposed between the jaws and which is to be turned by the wrench.
Still further it is proposed to construct the sisting in the gripping action of these jaws when gripping a member such as the head of a bolt.
A lever I is pivotally mounted at one end on the movable jaw I 2 and extends rearwardly along one side of the shank 10. The end of the lever l5 extends into a cutout l6 formed in'the movable jaw l2 and a pin I1 is engaged through the wrench in such a manner that manual pressure may be applied to the movable jaw for moving it still further towards the fixed jaw, causing the jaws to more tightly grip in the event the wrench slips while being used for training.
Another object of the invention providing the movable jaw with a pivotally mounted lever in turn pivotally connected with a toggle link connected with a screw to be moved backwards and forwards for providing the initial adjustment, after which the lever is to be manually moved towards the shank in a manner to provide the final manual movement of the movable jaw towards the fixed jaw to insure a tight gripping of the member disposed between the jaws.
It is a further object of this invention to construct a clamp wrench which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention,
and of the objects and advantages thereof, ref-' erence will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the clamp wrench constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged partial vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged partial horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4- -4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The clamp wrench, according to this invention, includes a shank l0 upon one end of which a stationary wrench jaw II is formed. A. movable jaw I2 is arranged complementary to the stationary jaw II and is slidably mounted on the shank Ill. The movable jaw 12 is formed with an opening l3 through which the shank slidably extends. The inner faces of the jaws are serrated for asoverlapped portions of the movable jaw I2 and the lever 15 for pivotally supporting the lever upon the movable jaw.
A toggle link I8 is pivotally connected at one end to an intermediate portion of the lever l5 by means of a pin l9. The free end of the toggle link l8 extends rearwardly beneath the lever l5 and along the shank H). The free end of the toggle link I8 more specifically actually straddles the side of the shank adjacent the lever l5 so that the link is limited to forward and rearward movement on the shank l0.
A screw is provided for moving the toggle link 18 forwards and rearwards on the shank Ill to in turn adjust the position of the movable jaw l2 relative to the fixed jaw II. The screw 20 has its intermediate portion threadedly engaged through a block 2| slidably mounted on the shank Ill. The outer end of the screw 2|] is formed with a knob 22 by which the screw 20 may be easily manually turned.
The inner end of the screw 20 is formed with an enlarged portion 23 which is rotatively engaged into a member 24 which continues into a ball 25. The ball 25 in turn rotatively engages a socket opening 26 formed in the back end of the toggle link l8. This construction permits the screw 20 to turn relative to the member 24 while the toggle line I3 is free to pivot about the ball 25, to assume a position similar to that indicated by the dot and dash lines l8 in Fig. 2 as compared .with the full line position of the link l8 in this figure.
Means is provided for locking the block 2| in various adjusted positions on the shank ID. This means comprises a pair of opposed plungers 21 slidably mounted on the block 2|. The ends of these plungers 21 are selectively engageable with complementary openings 28 formed in the sides of the shank I0. Springs 29 are provided for urging the plungers 21 into positions in which they engage the openings 28. Heads 30 are formed upon the other ends of the plungers by which they may be manually pushed against the action ofthe springs 29 to disengage the ends of the plungers from the openings 28 freeing the block 2| ,to be moved relative to the shank to provide a coarse adjustment of the movable jaw l2 relative to the fixed jaw II. A microscopic adjustment of the jaws H and I2 may be accomplished by the screw 20.
A U-shaped brace 3| extends beneath the shank, and has the free ends of its upwardly extending arms overlapping the bottom edges of the toggle link l8. Pins 32 pass freely through elongated slots 33 formed in the upwardly extending arms of the U-shaped brace 3i and are rigidly mounted into those portions of the toggle line [8 which are overlapped by the brace 3|.
Resilient means is provided for urging the brace 3| and the toggle link l8 into facial contact with the shank ID. This means comprises springs 34 disposed within recesses 35 cut in the adjacent faces of the brace 3| and the link l8. The top ends of the springs 34 are engaged upon the pins 32 and the bottom ends of the springs 34 are engaged upon pins 36 mounted in the bottom of the recesses 35 of the upwardly extending arms of the brace 3|.
The operation of the invention is as follows:
Assuming that the wrench is to grip the head of a bolt. First, the position of the movable jaw I2 is roughly adjusted relative to the fixed jaw l I by shifting the position of the block 2| on the shank. Final adjustments of the movable jaw I2 is then accomplished by turning the screw 20 to move the jaw forwards relative to the fixed jaw II to cause the jaws II and I2 to be dis posed immediately adjacent the sides of the head of the bolt, with the lever extended upwards at an angle similar to that illustrated by the dot and dash lines IS in Fig. 2. While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifica tions coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
' l. A clamp wrench, comprising a shank, a stationary wrench jaw on said shank, a movable jaw complementary to said stationary jaw and slidably mounted on said shank. a lever pivotally mounted on one end on said movable jaw and extending rearwardly along one side of said shank, a toggle, link pivotally mounted on said lever and extending rearwardly beneath said lever and along said shank, a screw operating between said toggle link and indirectly threadedly connected with said shank for moving saidtoggle link forwards and rearwards, a U-shaped brace extending beneath said shank and up along the sides thereof and engaging the sides of the toggle link adjacent the shank, and resilient means for urging said brace and toggle link against said shank to retain said toggle against shank, said connection between said screw and shank being characterized by said screw being threadedly engaged through a block slidably engaging said shank, and means for adjustably holding said block in various adjusted positions on said shank.
2. A clamp wrench, comprising a shank, a stationary wrench jaw on said shank, a movable jaw complementaryto said stationary jaw and slidably mounted on said shank, a lever pivot-.-
ally mounted on one end on said movable jaw and extending rearwardly along one side of said shank, a toggle link pivotally mounted on said lever and extending rearwardly beneath said lever and along said shank, a screw operating between said toggle and indirectlythreadedly connected with said shank for moving said toggle link forwards and rearwards, a U-shaped brace extending beneath said shank and up along the sides thereof and engaging the sides of the toggle link adjacent the shank, and resilient means for urging said brace and toggle link against said shank to retain said toggle against said shank, said connection between said screw and shank being characterized by said screw being threadedly engaged through a block slidably engaging said shank, and means for adjustably holding said block in various adjusted positions on said shank, comprising spring pressed plungers on said block engageable with complementary openings formed in the sides of said shank.
3. A clamp wrench, comprising a shank, a stationary wrench jaw on said shank, a movable jaw complementary to said stationary jaw and extending rearwardly along one side of said;
shank, a toggle link pivotally mounted on said lever and extending rearwardly beneath said lever and along said shank, a screw operating between said toggle andindirectly threadedly connected with said shank for moving said toggle link forwards and rearwards, a U-shaped brace extend-- ing beneath said shank and up along the sides thereof and engaging the sides of the toggle link adjacent the shank, and resilient means for urging said brace and toggle link against said shank to retain said toggle against said shank, said screw being turnably connected with a member, and a ball on said member engaging a socket opening in said toggle link for connecting said screw and link.

A clamp wrench, comprising a shank, a stationary wrench jaw on said shank, a movable jaw complemenetary to said stationary jaw and slidably mounted on said shank, a lever pivotally mounted on one end on said movable jaw and extending rearwardly along one side of said shank, a toggle link pivotally mounted on said lever and extending rearwardly beneath said lever and along said shank, a screw operating between said toggle and indirectly threadedly connected: with said shank for moving said toggle link forwards and rearwards, a U-shaped brace extending beneath said shank and up along the 5. A clamp wrench, comprising a shank, a stationary wrench jaw on said shank, a movable jaw complementary to said stationary jaw and slidably mounted on said shank, a lever pivotally mounted on one end on said movable jaw and extending rearwardly along one side of said shank, a toggle link pivotally mounted on said lever and extending rearwardly beneath said lever and along said shank, a screw operating between said toggle and indirectly threadedly connected with said shank for moving said toggle link forwards and rearwards, a U-shaped brace extending beneath said shank and up along the sides thereof, and resilient means for urging said brace and toggle link against said shank to retain said toggle against said shank said U- shaped brace having its upwardly extending arms overlapping said link, and pins extending from said link and passing through vertical elongated slots formed in the arms of said brace for connecting said brace and link said resilient means, comprising springs operating between said pins and other pins mounted on said brace, said springs being disposed in recesses formed in the adjacent faces of said link and brace.
