Application February 20,` H243, Serialfo. zclaims. stolz- 162i I This invention relates to gloves or mittensof` the gauntlet type, and more particularly to a novel construction whereby the Wrist area is yieldingly` held in snug engagement with the Wrist.

Gloves or mittens which are'not made of elastic material must be formed large enough at the Wrist area to clear the hand when the glove or mitten is placed on the hand or removed therefrom, or they must be cut longitudinally at the l wrist which is not desired in gauntlets.

Various means have been provided heretofore such `as straps, buttons, snap-fasteners and the like for holding the wrist area of gloves or Inittens in snug relation about the Wrist,'but one serious objection to these fastening means is that they need to be manually operated when the gloves are put on or taken off.

The present invention contemplates an extremely simple construction for use in gloves or mittens of non-stretchable material, which serves automatically to contract the wrist area thereof, to cause this area to embrace the wrist snugly.

Since the novel construction herein contemplated is as well adapted for use in gloves as in mittens the former construction alone will be mentioned in most cases hereinafter, but may be construed as covering both gloves and mittens.

The construction of the present invention has been developed primarily for use in gauntlet rubber gloves, such as woven fabric gloves havingan outer coating of rubber, or non-stretchable rubber gloves, and wherein the wrist area which will not stretch appreciably must be made large enough to permit the hand to passtherethrough. Gloves of this type maybe used an antivesicant gloves or to protect the hands from various liquids.

These gloves have to be vulcanized in order to give good service, and in accordance with the present invention, the looseness that is provided in the wrist portion of theglove about the Wrist is taken up by forming a flat hinge-like fold at opposite sides of the wrist and by vulcanizing the glove material in this folded condition so that the rubber of the fold will thereafter yieldingly resist the opening of the fold to admit the hand. In this manner gloves are provided with a wrist area which while full enough to receive the hand,

, normally assume a retracted condition that embraces the wrist snugly.

The novel features of the present invention will be more fully understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing; wherein:

The mitten I0 and glove Il shown in the drawing may be formed of a woven fabric I2 out and folded and then sewed at the side seam I3 and around the ngers and thumbin a well known manner to `form an `inexpensive Work-type of glove or mitten.

The mitten I0 or glove II is then rendered impervious Ito liquids and gases by coating the entire outer surface thereof with rubber as indicated lby I4. This may be done by placing the glove on a form that will hold it extended substantially as if a'hand were inserted thereinand then repeatedly dipping the glove in a rubber vsolution such as a latex compound and drying.

However a quicker and less expensive way to provide the fabric glove or mitten with a rubber is then removed and the rubber covered glove thus formed is vulcanized while a suction is maintained in the glove form.

During the vulcanization of the glove or mitten the construction of the present invention is readily imparted thereto by utilizing the above mentioned suction action to draw the glove material closely about the wrist so that the excess material in this area will assume the form of a flat hinge-like fold at each side of the glove or mitten as indicated by I5 and I5. After the rubber in the folded area` I5 and I6 has been vulcanized in this flat condition it will yieldingly hold the fabric in this flat condition so as toautomatically contract the wrist area about the wrist of the person wearing the glove. The strength of this folding action caused by vulcanizing the seam in the folded condition can be made as strong as desired by increasing the thickness of the rubber in this area.

It will be seen from the foregoing that as a .result of the present invention an extremely simple and practical construction for causing a glove or mitten to lt snugly about the wrist is Secured.

While reference is herein made to rubber in the specication and claims, it is to be understood that various rubber-like materials capable of being vulcanized may be employed as the coating materialv I4,and the claims,y are'tofbe vso construed.- Y e Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
