This invention relates to: apparatus for mounting safety pins on cards.
The primary object of the" present invention is the provision of an apparatus by p which the mounting of safety pins on cards is greatly facilitated and expedited. In other words, the main purpose of the presentinvention is to'provide an apparatus which eliminates the tedious, slow and ineflicient'operations heretofore necessitated in the method practiced for a great many. years in the manufacturing of cards of safety pins.
More specifically, the main objects of the present invention are: to facilitate the opening of safety pins; to facilitate the assembly of the .pins with the card on which they are mounted; and to facilitate the closureof the pins after theprongs thereof are passed through said card'in 81558111? bling the pins thereon. p
The above objects oftheinvention and other objects ancillary theretowill best-be understood from the following description of the apparatus embodying the present invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings which are to be considered as illustrative of the invention and not limitative thereof.

Fig. 10 is a sideview of the part shown in Fig.9. Referring first to Fig 8, there is shown acard C which has" mounted thereon a plurality of safety pins P. One of thepins has been omitted from the illustrated card to show one. pair of a plurality of pairs of apertures a through which the prongs of the pins extend, there being as many pairs of apertures as pins which are mounted on the card. 'Usually,in accordance with the prior art practice, the cards are provided with these apertures before the pins are applied thereto,iin order to make it easier to pass the prongs of the pins through the card. In applying safety pins to cards by means of the apparatus of the present invention, however, the provision of these apertures in the cards is unnecessary, but isoptional as the present apparatus can be used for applying safety pins to cards whether or not the 10 latter areprovided with prong receiving apertures. It will be understood that in mounting safety pins on cards, it is necessary first to open said pins; since the pins, as manufactured a're closed; then the open pinsmust be assembled in '15 proper spaced relation on the-cards; and thereafter the pins on the cards must be closed.
Referring now to the apparatus of the present invention, said apparatus comprises a card holder I0 in which the card C is mounted in condition to permit the safety pins to be passed therethrough. More particularly,-as illustrated in Fig; 2 thecard C is bent substantially into the form shown, providing in the card an intermediate arched or curved portion l2 for the passage of eachprong of'the pins through a-pair of apertures a or through corresponding parts of the card when the latteris not provided with apertures. The. present inventionfmakes. provision for obviating the disadvantages of the. old method of opening the. safety pins. The means foroperating pin releasing bar I08 comprises a crank arm H2 to which the rear end of bar N16 is rigidly secured. Said crank arm is fixed to a shaft I I4 journalled for turning 'I I4 is rotated by a sprocket wheel I22 which is fixed thereto and which is engagedby a sprocket drawings; "-It will be noted by reference to Fig. 2 that the pivotal axis of holder 48' extends'p'arallel to'and is spaced laterally of a lineextendin'g chain I24; Said sprocket chain passes over said sprocket wheel and downwardly through openings I26 in plate 62 and in the top of table 84.
One end of said sprocket chain is connected by means of a cord or chain I28 to a treadle I30 and the other end of said sprocket chain is connected to one end of a spring I32, the other end of said spring being secured to a'fixed eyebolt or the like I34. Accordingly, when treadle I30'is depressed, sprocket' wheel I22 is rotated in a clockwise direction viewing Figs. 2, 5 and. 7, and the pin releasing bar IDS is moved from its retracted position illustrated in Figs. 2 and '7 to the projected position illustrated in Fig. 5 for releasing the prongs from the pins mounted in holder 48. Immediately thereafter upon release of treadle I30, the spring I32 pulling on sprocket chain I24 rotates shaft H4 in a counter-clockwise direction, thereby moving the prong releasing bar I06 to its retracted position and allowing the prongs of the pins to move upwardly in the spaces between the adjacent pin retaining members subin dotted card in the card holder andare aligned with the grooves 22 in member I4 of the card holder and with the companion pairs'cfapertures-a, when the card is provided with such apertures. The pin holder is moved to this intermediate position by turning the same quicklyabout the axis of shaft 50, thus to prevent the pins from falling out of the holder. For this purpose, the front end of said shaft is provided with a handle I38 which, when turned'quickly in a clockwise direction, viewin Fig. 2, moves the pin holder and the opened pins carried therebytc the position illustrated in dotted lines insaid figure "or the through the receptacle ends 88 in which the spring ends of the-pins are, received wherebysaid ends of the receptacles are-eccentric to said piv-' otalaxis, and that the pin holder 48 is movable from-the pin-receiving an'd'pin-opening position in which the receptacle ends 88 are disposed at one sideof said'pivotal' axis to a positiontoward the card in which said receptacle 'ends 88 are dis posed at the o'pposite'side' of said pivotal axis, said last-mentioned position being illustrated in dotted lines in-Fig. 2. The prongs of the pins are thus properly positioned :for movement through the slots of the card holder. The pin holder and the pins carried thereby arethen moved to the'right viewing Fig. 2 by depressingtreadle 68 and during this movement the prongs of the .pins are projected through-the cards, the prongs :passing below or at the concave surf-ace of the intermediate archedportion I2 of the card and the head and side wire of the pin passing over the other side of said arched portion of: the card. While the holder 48 and the pins carried thereby are thus being moved by the operation of 'treadle 68-, the handle I 02 of the pin holder 48 is grasped by the operator of the apparatus and'pressure is exerted downwardly on the holder 48 so that the pin prongs are held down in' engagement with the bottoms of the grooves 38, 22 and 48. At the end of the movement of holder 48 to the right at which time, the ends of the prongs of the pins project laterally beyond side bar 28, the holder 48 is further depressed by the operator and at the same time'the holder is turned on its pivot 60 for moving the heads of the pins laterally of the pointed ends of the prongs and suffioiently belowsaid prongs to allow the ends of said prongs to move into said heads, thus closing the pins as illustrated in Fig; 6. Then the holder is returned to its pin receiving position and substantially simultaneousl the treadle 68 is released whereby the pin holder is returned by'springs I6 to the retractedand spring receiving position illustrated in full lines in Fig; 2. Finally the card with the pins mounted thereon is removed from the card holder.
It will be clearly understood from-the above description that in the preferred form of the apparatus as illustrated herein, a plurality of pins are simultaneously opened by operation of the pinreleasingbar I06 and that the opened pins are simultaneously projected through the card on which the'pins are to bemounted, said card being positioned on the card holder I0, and that after said pins are projected through said card in thecard holder, they are simultaneously closed by depressing and slightly turning'the pin holder 48 about its pivot '60. .It will be understood, however, that while the pin releasing bar'and the; mechanism for operating the sarneioropening the pins is preferred and cooperates with the pin holder 48 which thus constitutes part of the pin opening means of the present invention, as well as part of themeans for projecting the pins through the card in the card holder, it is not absolutelynessential although highly desirable,

Apparatus for mounting safety pins on cards comprising means for holdinga card bent into arched shape, and a holder fora plurality of safety pins, saidpin holder having means for supporting said pins in predetermined spaced relation with the prongs of the pins disposed upwardly and pointing away from the card, said card holder having spaced grooves disposedibelow the median arched surface of the -card-in the holder, said pin holder being rotatable for moving theipins carried thereby to positions in which the prongs of the pins are disposed insaid grooves, respectively, adjacent one side of the card, and are pointed-toward the card in said holder, said pin holder being "movable toward said card holder for projectingv said prongs through the card and across the median arched portion thereof at the concave side of the card whereby each of said prongs penetrates through the card at points spaced laterally of the card.
8. Apparatus formounting safety pins on cards comprising means for holding a card bent into arched shape, and a holder for a plurality prong-holding ends of said pins over the ends of the companion prongs, respectively, for closing the pins after-they are projected throughsaid card.

Apparatus for opening a, plurality of safety pins comprisingmeans for holding a plurality of said pins in laterally spaced relation, prong releasing means comprising-a longitudinal member mounted for pivotal movement about an axis extending transversely of said pins in the holder from a retracted position to'aprojected position in engagement'withsaid .pr'ongs for pressing said prongs toward said side'wires,'; said longitudinal member having prong-engaging parts which move said prongslaterally of the companion (pin heads, respectively, fordisengaging said prongs from said heads when said prong releasing means is pressed downwardly against said prongs and thereafter retracted to allo'w' the springs of saidpins to move the released prongs upwardly while the free ends'of said prongs'are'dis'posed laterally of the companion pin heads, andmeans operatively connected to said longitudinal member for moving-the same to and from said re tra'cted and projected positions thereof.

Apparatus for mounting safety pins on cards comprising acard holder, means for opening a plurality of safety pins, a pin holder mounted'for'movement in relation to said pin-opening means and said card holder from a position in which the pins are positioned for engagement by said pin-opening means for opening the pins to aposition for engaging the prongs of the opened pins with the card in said card holder, said pinholder being also movable'in the last mentioned position thereof'toward said card holder to project the prongs of the pins through the'card in the card holder, and means operatively connected to-said pin holder for moving it toward.

In apparatus of the character described, a holder for a plurality of safety pins, said holder comprising a'p'lurality of pin 'receptaclesdisposed laterally of each other, said receptacles being constructed and arranged to receive the pins with the prong and side wire of the pin in each receptacle disposed in a plane transversely of the bottom of the receptacle, each. of said receptacles having an opening for the movement of the prong of the pin laterally of the head of the pin, a card holder having groovesv for'guiding the. prongs of the pins through the card in the holder, said pinholder being pivotally movable about said axis :from a position-for receivingpinssimsaid :recep- :tacles thereof toa position for aligning the prongs of the open pins with said grooves of the card holder, said pin holder being mountedforimovement longitudinally, of said grooves.for;projectwhich is provided with card-holding means, a

In apparatus of the character described, a holder for a plurality of safety pins, said holder comprising a plurality of pin receptacles disposed laterally of each other, said receptacles bein constructed and arranged to receive the pins with the prong and side wire of the pin in each receptacle disposed in a plane transverselyof the bottom ofthe receptacle, each .of said receptacleshaving an opening for the movement of the prong of the pin laterally of the head of the pin for disengaging the prong from the head for opening the pin, and means mounting said holder for movement from a position in which the bottoms of said receptacles are below the, ins therein to a position in which the bottoms of said receptaclesare above the pins :therein.

In apparatus of the character described which is provided with a card holder, a holder for a plurality of safety pins, said holder comprising a plurality of pin receptaclesdispcsed lat-,- erally of each other, said receptacles .being'comstructed and arranged to receive the pins with the prong and side wire of the pinin each receptacle disposed-in aplane transversely of :the bottom of the receptacle, eachof said receptacles having an opening for the movement of the prong of the pin laterally of the head of the pin for disengaging the prong from the head for opening the in, means mounting said holder for movement from a position in which'the bottoms of said receptacles are below the pins therein to a position in which the bottoms of said receptacles are above the pins therein, means engageof said member and meansfor holding arcard in bent formation over said convex surface, .means for simultaneously mounting a plurality of safety pins on said card in the card holder comprising a holder for a plurality of the safety pins, said pin holder being provided with means for positioning said pins with the prongs thereof in alignment with said grooves, respectively, of the card holder, and means mounting said pinholder for movement toward said cardholder in a direction longitudinally of'said grooves for moving said prongs longitudinally in said grooves,,respectively, through the portions ofthe cardin alignment with the opposite ends, respectively, of said grooves and means mounting said ,pin holderifor movement toward and away from the bottom of said grooves and alsovlaterally of said grooves for engaging the prongs of the. pins with their companion heads, respectively, for closing the pinsmounted on thecard.

In apparatus of the character described which comprises a card holder having a forming member provided with a surface having a pinrality of spaced grooves extending laterally of said member and means for holding a card in bent formation over said surface, means.for-simultaneously mounting a plurality of safety pins on said card in the card holder comprising a holder for a plurality of the safety pins,'said pin holder being provided with means for positioning said pins with the prongs thereof in alignment with said grooves, respectively, of thecard holder, means mounting said pin holder for movement toward said card holder in a direction longitudinally of said grooves for moving said prongs longitudinally in said grooves, respectively, through the portions of the card in alignment with the opposite ends, respectively, of said grooves, and means mounting said pin holder for movement laterally of said grooves for bringing the heads of the pins on said card in the card holder into retaining relation with the companion prongs, respectively, in said grooves for. closing the'pins mounted on said card.

In apparatus of the character described, a holder'fora plurality of safety pins; said holder comprising a'plurality of pin receptaclesYdisposecl laterally of each other, said receptacles being constructed and arranged'to :receive the pins with the prongand side wire of the pin in each receptacle disposed in a plane transversely of the bottom of the: receptacle, each of said receptacles having anopening for the movement of the prong of the pin laterallyof the head of the pin for disengaging the prong from the head for opening the pin and means mounting said holder for pivotal movement about an axis extending parallel to andspaced laterally of aline extending transversely of said receptacles at the ends thereof in which the spring ends of the pins are'received whereby said ends of the receptaclesare eccentric to said pivotalaxis.
19. In apparatus of the character described, a
holder for a plurality of safety pins, said holder comprising a plurality of, pin receptacles disposed laterally of each other, said receptacles being constructed and arranged to receive the pinswith the prong and side wire of the pin in each receptacle disposed in aplane transversely of the bottom of the receptacle, each of said receptacles having an opening for the movement of 'the prong of the pin laterally of the head of the pinion disengaging the prong from the head for openingithepin, means mountingsaid holder forpivotal movement about an axis extending parallel to and spaced laterally of a line extending transversely of said receptacles at the ends thereof in which the spring, ends of the pins are received whereby said ends of the receptacles are eccentric to said pivotal axis, said holderbeing movable about said axis from a position in which said last mentioned ends'of the receptacle are at one side of said axis to a position in which said last mentioned endsof the receptacle are'at the opposite side of said axis, and means engageable with the prongs of said pins when the holder is in said first mentioned position forreleasing the prongs from the companion heads of the pins.

In apparatus of the character described, a holder for a plurality of safety pins, said holder comprising a plurality of pin receptacles disposed laterally of each other, said receptacles being constructed and arranged to receive the pins with the prongs and side wire of the pin in each receptacle disposed in a plane transversely of the bottom of the 1 receptacle, said holder having spaces between adjacent pin receptacles for the relative lateral movement of the prongs and companion heads of the pins, and means mounting said holder for movement from a position in which the bottoms of said receptacles are below the pins therein to a position in which the botaxis inthe opposite direction for releasing said bar from said pins.

In apparatus of the character described, a holder for a carrier formed of sheet material on which a plurality of safety pins are to be mounted in laterally spaced relation, said carrier holder comprising a forming member having a convex surface provided with a plurality of spaced grooves extending laterally ofsaid member, means for releasably retaining said carrier in bent formation over said convex surface, said retaining means 7 ly of said grooves in position near the inlet ends of said grooves, said last mentioned member having a plurality of laterally spaced grooves in registry with said ends of the grooves-in said forming member and disposed at opposite sides thereof when said retaining meansis inoperative carrier 1 retaining relation to said forming member, said grooves in said forming member providing spacesand guides for the prongs of the safety pins in the projection of said prongs through the carrier in .said holder, and said grooves in said retaining member serving to guide said prongs through said carrier at laterally spaced points adjacent said ends of the grooves in said forming member.
