2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in stokers and has for its primary object to provide a reciprocable feed plate adapted for feeding the coal from a hopper onto a fire plate or grate and progressively feeding the coal across the re plate while being consumed.
A further object is to provide an apparatus of this character of simple and practical construction, which is eillcient and reliable in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and maintain in operation and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing forming part hereof, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout. and in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on a line 2-2 of Figure l, and
Figure 3 is a sectional 3 3 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 5 designates a hopper having an inclined rear wall 6 at the lower end of which is the discharge opening for feeding coal onto a feed plate 1. 'I'he feed plate extends horizontally forwardly into a housing l projecting from the front wall of the hopper, the feed plate being spaced below the top of the housing.
A bearing 9 is formed on the underside of the feed plate for slidably mounting on a pair of rods Il having their rear ends supported in a bracket I I and their front ends supported by the rear wall of a chamber I2. A removable perforated fire plate or grate I3 is supported ilush with the top of the chamber on ribs Il' formed on the inner walls of the chamber and on which the coal is burned. Projecting from the rear upper edge of the chamber I2 is a shelf Il and on which is slidable the down-turned flange I5 on the front end of the feed plate 'l constituting a pusher for moving the coal forwardly on the ilre plate.
Beneath the inclined rear wall i of the hopper is an electric motor (not shown) enclosed in a housing It for driving an eccentric Il through suitable gearing in the housing Il. centric is connected to the underside of the rear of the feed plate 'l by a pitman I8 for reciprocably actuating the feed plate.
A blower Il is also connected to one side of the motor housing Il for supplying a draft of air to the chamber I2 through a pipe 2l.
Accordingly coal view taken on a line (Cl. 11G-32) lo tionary horizontal end of the feed plate I from the hopper, the coal being moved forwardly on the feed plate during reciprocation of the latter by its engagement with the rear inclined wall 0 of the hopper. From the front end of the feed plate the coal drops onto 4the lire plate I3 where it is burned, and is gradually moved toward the front edge of the latter by the pusher Il and the ashes discharged from the front edgev of the re plate into a suitable receptacle.
'Ihe quantity of coal fed to the ilre plate is controlled by a check plate 2| supported between spaced upstanding flanges 22 in the top of the housing l and secured in vertically adjusted position by a set screw 2l.
A discharge pipe- 25 is connected to the bottom of the chamber I2 by means of which ne ashes may be blown from the chamber.
Suitable control valves (not shown) may be provided in the pipes 2l and 25.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A stoker comprising a hopper having a forwardly and downwardly inclined rear wall and a vertical front wall terminating in a plane above the lower edge of said rear wall, a housing having a flat horizontal top wall extending forwardly from the lower edge of said front wall, a chamber directly at the front of said housing having a staperforated re plate at the top thereof disposed in a plane below that of the top wall of the housing, a flat horizontal shelf extending rearwardly from said chamber flush with said fire plate, a ilat horizontal feed plate extending from side to side of said housing and disposed in spaced parallel relation to and below the top wall of the latter, said feed plate contacting the lower edge of the rear wall of said hopper and having a downturned flange at its front end slidable solely on said shelf entirely in advance of said hopper for pushing the coal forwardly from the shelf onto and across the re plate when the feed plate is moved forwardly, and means to reciprocate said feed plate whereby coal is forced od of the forward end oi' the latter onto the shelf in advance of said flange upon rearward movement of said feed plate. said top wall of the housing having upstanding spaced transverse flanges, a check plate disposed between said flanges' and vertically adjustable below said top wall to control the thickness of the forwardly fed layer of coal on said feed plates, and means to secure said check plate in any vertically adjusted position thereof.
