Description

(No Model.)
RFEHR. Ferment-ing Vat.
No. 237,509. Patent'ed Fb. 8,1881..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK FEHE, oF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
FERMENTlNG-VAT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 237,509, dated February 8l, 1881.
Application led September 13, 1880. (N o model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK FEI-IR, of Louisville, in the State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fermenting-Vats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms part of this specilication, in which the ligure is a perspective, partly in section.
This invention relates to an improved Ineans for supplying pure air to fermentation-vats and for conducting from the same the heated gaseous products of fermentation.
My improvement consists in connecting with the closed tops of the fermentation-vats `an air-pipe, leading to the outside of the building, and arranged so as to induce a current of fresh air, which is conducted to the vats, as hereinafter fully described.
Let A A designate the fermentation-veus, arranged in a cellar in the usual Way. These vats are of ordinary or suitable construction, but instead of being open, as heretofore, are closed by means of covers B.
The letter C refers to a long pipe, which eK- tends through the cellar in which the vats are arranged, and has both of its ends passed out through the walls of the same into the open air. At oneend, b, this pipe is somewhat enlarged, so as to induce a current of air through the pipe in the direction indicated by the arrows. If it is desirable to have a stronger current of air, it may be produced by arranging the pipe upon an incline, with the smaller end, of course, higher than the larger. This pipe G communicates With the interiors of the several vats through the medium ofthe branch pipes D, one of which rises from the cover of each vat and connects with the main pipe C,
which is common to all of the said branch pipes. Just above the covers of the vats the branch pipes have each a stop-cock, E, Whereby the communication between the interior of the vat and the main pipe leadinginto the eX- ternal atmosphere may be cnt oft'. When the stop-cocks are opened, however, the heated gaseous products of fermentation will pass up through the branch pipes into the main pipe, and thence through one end of the latternamed pipe into the open air, While the air entering said main pipe will circulate through the same and its branches, thereby supplying pure fresh air to the mash within the vats.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the fermentationvats, of an air-pipe passed through the cellar inwhich the vats are arranged, with its ends extended through the building into the external air, and provided with branch pipes connecting it with the closed vats, substantially,
as described.
2. The combination, with the fermentationvats A, closed by suitable covers and arranged within the cellar, of the pipe O, formed with an enlarged end, b, and having both ends eX- tended into the external atmosphere, and the branch pipes D, provided with stop-.cocks and connecting the pipe G with the closed vais, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses,
FRANK FERR.
