BLADE HOLDING DEVICE Filed March 31, 1944 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 4e ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 24, 1 945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BLADE HOLDING DEvIcE William H. Rose, Jersey City, N. J. Application March 31, 1944, Serial No. 528,935 1 Claim. (01. ao-sssy My invention relates to devices adapted for cutting purposes and refers particularly to devices in which safety blade razors may beemployed as the cutting element, but I do not limit myself to such cutting means.
One of the objects of my invention is devices adapted for containing a cutting element, the edges of which may be screened, or protected, when the device is not in use.
Another object of my invention is devices of the character described in which cutting elements may be readily removed and inserted.
Another object of my invention is devices of the character described in which the cutting element does not extend beyond the longitudinal length of the casing when employed for cutting purposes.
Another object of my invention is devices of the character described in which an opening in the side thereof offers means for moving the cuttingelement to and from cutting and non-outting positions. 1 p y Another object of my invention is devices of V the character described in which thecutting edge is exposed through the sideof the casing.
Another object of my invention is devices of the character described which are free from springs and pivotal members.
Another object of my invention is devices of the character described which are shorter than twice the length of the cutting element,
Another object of my invention is devices of the character described in which the cutting element per se is the only moving part.
Another object of my invention is devices of the character described in which only a portion of the cutting edge is exposed when in use, thus avoiding the danger of a longer portion of exposed cutting edge.
Another object of my invention is a small, compact and safe device of the character described, which is inexpensive in production, easy in operation and effective in use.
That the devices of my invention possess all of the above mentioned and other valuable features will be evident upon a consideration of my specification and its accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating modified forms of the devices of my invention, the same numbers refer to the same elements.
Figure 1 is a front plan view of one form of my devices with a safety razor blade inserted therein, said blade being in protected position.
Figure 1A is a front end view of the devices of Figure 1.

Figure 6 is a fragmentary front plan view of a modified form of a device of my invention.
Figure 7 is a rear view of the device of Figure 6. Figure 8 is a rear end View Of a modified form Figure 9 is a top plan view of the rear member of a device of my invention.
Figure 10 is a view through the line Ill-I0 of Figure 9.
Figures 11, 12 and 13 are fragmentary vertical sections through modified forms of back member of devices of my invention.
The particular form of a device of my invention shown in Figures 1, 1A, 1B and 2 comprises a casing for a safety razor blade consisting of a back plate 20 having a centrally positioned depressed portion 2|.between the two side portions 22 and 22, the depressed portion 2| being unobstructed in its rearward end and closed at its most forward end. Positioned upon the back plate 20 is a front plate 23 having a central opening 24. The side portions 22 of the back plate 20 and the front plate 23 in this form of my dc vice are permanently connected together by any suitable means such as glue.
It will be noted that the device thus formed has a rearward hand portion designated as a whole as 24 and a forwardly extended finger portion 25 cutaway along one side and provided with bevelled lower margins 20A and 23A, as shown in Fig. 1A.
As a result of the recess 2| in the back plate 20 that plate and the front plate 23 contact each other only along the side portions 22 and along the end of the forwardly extended finger portion 25, leaving a space between the center portions of such plates for the reception of a. razor blade. This space extends clear to the outer end of rearward hand portion 24 to permit a blade to be inserted or withdrawn. The space does not extend to the outer end of the finger portion so as to provide a shoulder 24A which will prevent the blade sliding out of the holder when the latter is drawn to the left (Fig. 3) to cut a piece of paper, cardboard or the like.
A sheet of felt or other suitable material is placed within the depression portion 2| of the back plate 20, the chief object of the felt element being to retain the blade from accidental displacement in any position in which it is placed. Another object of the felt element is to permit blades of the varying thickness to be used.
In operation, a safety razor blade 50-" is in--- serted into depressed portion" of the back plate 20 and upon the felt 26 through the rear end of the device and when thus positioned, the
device-is in the condition shown in Figure 1 and the cutting edges of the blade are protected.
The portion of the plate 23 forming part ofthe hand portion 24 has an elongated opening 21 through which a finger or other suitablemeans ing the dangers incident to' use' 'o'f devio'e'sof a folding" construction Or navmgs rm'g maintaining means.
1 Theidevice of my invefition showii in Fg ures 4 and 5Iissimilar ingeneral constructionand use t'o" that Show/"1 1+in; theprecedin'g figures; 6X- cepVthattheback plate has upwardly extended sides 30 and the fr0nt p1ate' 2-3Hs' of slightly resilient material in order that when it is fi'exed into position, the two'plates will be maintained in position* with respect to each other" b'ythe pressed abutment of the sides of the front plate 23" against the faces of the extended members 30*, of the back plateifl. i
The modified for-m of my device shown ii'i Fig ures fi' and 7: is'sim'ilarto that first shown and described except that the extended sides 22, 22
of the back plate 20 have cut outs All, 40 into which the extended portions 41, 4| of the front plate 23 are positioned to assist in maintaining the front plate from sliding over the back plate.
The modified form of my device shown in Figure 8 is similar to that first shown and described except that the back plate 50 and the front plate 5| are of one piece construction.
Figures 9 to 13, both inclusive, show'modified means'for positioning the felt= 26', other suitable material as tlie b ack plate 20' and" are self explanatory.
. While I have shown a device of my invention particularly adapted for use with safety razor blades, it isevident that it may be so constructed as tozbe operative with other cutting devices.
It is also evident that my devices are of such simple construction that they may be made of many suitable materials including metals, glass, numerous synthetic resins and other material and syritheticmaterialsz 1 r I; tnerrcsr'eg dd not limit myselfto we": par-- ticular size; shape, n il'rfiber; materials aridconstructioiis shown and described as these are .shown and described solely-for th'e'purpdse of fiii e'dly retained W'it'h ir'i-S'aid rcessadlpted 0'0 anus a razorbiade placed within the device; the marginal edges of said plateand said back" plate coinciding in their efitirtywith eac'h other;
