APPLIANCE SMOKERS Filed May 22 1943 Patented Apr. 24, 1945 sMoKERs APPLIANCE andrew Robb, New Britain, conn.
Application May 22, 1943, Serial No. 488,085
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a smokers appliance, and it is the ,primary purpose of the invention to provide a device of this kind for severing a cigarette when the smoker wishes only to have a short smoke, thus permitting the unused portion of the cigarette to be retained until it is desired to use` the same.
It is also an object of the invention to providel a device of this kind constructed in a manner whereby the same is attractive to the eye and is free of any projecting parts which might have a tendency to catch in the pocket, handbag or the like and also free of any rough edges which might be harmful to the hands of the user.`
A still further o-bject of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which comprises two substantially duplicate sections hingedly connected in a, manner to provide an enclosing cylindrical device when the sections are in closed position and wherein said sections at a desired point intermediate the ends thereof are provided with cutting members coacting in a manner to sever the cigarette initially placed upon one of the sections when the second section is closed thereon.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved smokers appliance whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a smokers appliance constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken longitudinally through the device as illustrated in Figure l, with certain of the parts in elevation.
Figure 3 is a sectional view substantially on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a sectional view substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a sectional view substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the sections in relative open position.
Figure 7 is a sectional view similar to Figure 4 but showing the sections open.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary sectional View taken substantially on the line 8 8 of Figure 6, and
Figure 9 is a detailed sectional view taken sub- 55 (Cl. 20S-41.5)
stantially on the line 9 9 of Figure 2 through one side only of the appliance. f
The invention. as embodied in the disclosure in the accompanying drawing consists of an elongated member M divided longitudinally to provide two substantially duplicate sections I 'and 2,
each of which is semicircular in cross section and which have adjacent longitudinal margins hingedly connected, as Aat 3, whereby the sections I and 2 may be swung in superimposed relation or open outwardly one with respect to the other.
The hinged connections 3, hereinbefore referred to, in the present form of the invention, comprise interiitting knuckles a throughwhich the pintles b pass and one of the sections, as l2, which may be called the top section, hasv its hinged longitudinal edge beveled, as at c, at an angle slightly in excess of degrees, so that the adjacent longitudinal hinged edges of the sections I and 2 coact to limit the extent of opening movement of the section 2 relative to the section l but to an extent to allow the section 2 to be moved suiiiciently to one side of the section I for the free placement of a cigarette upon the section l.
The section 2 is open at one end and the adber 8. This slide member 8 is cylindrical in form 'and of such radius as to be snugly received within the adjacent portion of the section -I and in the adjacent portion of the section 2 when the sections are closed.
The outer end of the slide member 8 is provided at its axial center with a socket 9 into which threads a shank I0. This shank I0 extends through the plate 4 and has swiveled connection therewith, as at II, so that this shank I0 can be readily rotated yet is held by the plate 4 against endwise movement. This shank I0 outwardly of the plate 4 is provided with a knurled head I2 immediately adjacent the plate 4 and which provides means whereby the shank I 0 can be readily rotated to eiect the desired adjustment of the slide member 8 lengthwise of the section I dependent upon the length of the portion of a cigarette desired to be cut 0E, as well, of course,-
point intermediate its ends, whereby a cigarette ,i
threaded or inserted through the central openings I6 of the plates I4 will be effectivelyrsevered as the section 2 is closed upon the section I. By having the cigarette disposed through the openings I6 with the blade I5 functioning between the plates I4, the desired cutting of the cigarette is accomplished without collapsing the cigarette but,
on the contrary, assures a clean, sharp lineof cut through the cigarette.
While any suitable means may be employed for .securing the sections I and 2 together there is shown a spring catch I'I carried by one of the sections adjacent to the free longitudinal edge thereof. which is constructed and arranged to connect with'a suitably formed part of the other section when-the sections are in closed relation. v
From the foregoing description it is thought t0 be obvious that a smokers appliance constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
What is claimed is:
l. A smokers appliance of the character described comprising a relatively long tubular casing divided radially to form two substantially semi-circular portions, a circular end wall formed integral with one end of each portion for coaction with the adjacent end of the other portion, a screw swivelly mounted at one end in the center of one end wall to extend axially within the casing, a head upon the outer end of the screw, a slide threadably mounted upon the screw within the casing, means forming a guide between the slide and the casing portion to which the adjacent end wall is xed, and co-acting means carried by the casing portions, spaced from the slide and forming a combined holding and cutting v means for cooperative action with the slide.
2. A smokers appliance comprising a relatively long tubular casing radially divided to form two substantially semi-circular portions, a circular end wall `forming an integral part of one end of each portion .for co-action with the adjacent end of the other portion, means disposed within the casing and adjustably connected with one end wall for movement Vlongitudinally of the .casing to facilitate the positioning of a cigarette in the casing, an annular member secured transversely of and within the casing portion carrying said member, through which a cigarette is adapted for insertion toward said adjustable member, and a substantially circular knife carried by the other casing portion for movement in a plane paralleling the annular member and in close proximity thereto for severing a cigarette extending therethrough.
3. An appliance as set forth in claim l, in which the coupling means between the slide and the casing portion comprises a rib carried by the slide and a guide groove ,formed in the inner surface and longitudinally of the wall of the adjacent casing portion to slidably receive said rib.
