This invention relates to telegraph switching system and particularly to that class of telegraph switching and transmission systems known as y satellite oice systems. f
The principal elements of a satellite system are, iirst a number of outlying stations or subscribers stations located in a particular regOIl in which the trafc is insuiicient or where there are other circumstances making it uneconomical or impractical to ymaintain a central ,oiiice individual to those subscribers. Another element of the system comprises one or more central offices, usually one, and a satellite or unattended switching station approximately in thegeographical center of the group of subscribers stations. By means of a small number of trunks sending from the central office or offices ,to the satellite ofl'lce and individual lines 'from the satellite oiice to each subscribers station combined with automatic switching arrangements at the satellite olice whereby interconnections may be made between any of the trunks and any of the subscriber lines, service may be given to all the subscribers not only for intercommunication with each other but to and beyond the central olce.
Systems of this type are known. One such system is disclosed in the application of Fitch et al., Serial No. 173,958, led November .11, 1937.
simplification of apparatus andy consequent re-v ductions of cost and maintenance. v
Another solution of this problem is disclosed in Large Patent'2,356,067, dated August 15, v194A;
thisv system operates upon a jack per line basis (one jack multiple at the central oiiice for each subscribers line). That arrangement is more eX- pensive to install and maintain than the arrange' ment of the present application; it operates, of course, uponr principles which are considerably diierent.
Other attempts to give a somewhat similar service have involved the use of dial code which is relatively undesirable from an operating standpoint because it introduces additional transmission elements and other complexities. f
They extem. and it may be lStill other arrangementsv have involved not only the difficulties inherent in the use of dial code but also required the transmission of three signaling conditions over the trunks which made it impossible to use standard telegraph repeaters, if indeed any repeaters at all are useable in the trunks of such systems and, furthermore, such systems are entirelyunsuitable for extending communication paths established to the central oiilce beyond the central oiiice and, furthermore, are lacking in satisfactory call and supervisory means. y i.
The present systemresults from eiorts to incorporate the essential and most desirable features of a system such as disclosed in theKinkead and Lucek Patent 2,340,599, supra, into a system utilizing trunks operating on the haliduplex principle instead of the yfull-duplex principle together with the attendant simplicity 'of circuits and economy of operationr and maintenance. l
In Lucek Patent 2,368,715, dated February 6, 1945, there is disclosed and'claimed a system including conference circuits which serve subscribers, whose lines terminate at a satellite oiiice, which may be connected into an intersubscribers conference circuit under remote control by the adjacent central oice operator or under manual control by an attendant, serviceman or night attendant at the satellite office. In that Lucek application, the trunk circuits are of the full-duplex type. This present system as disclosed herein includes the option of equivalent conference circuits in a system employing halfduplex trunks;v this, therefore, is another feature of the invention.
In certain localities a system of this type may be required to operate over trunks of different types, some of which may be subject'to conysiderable interference, such as simplex phantom kmay be neutralized, thereby improving the transmission not only with respect to supervisory signals but also with respect to communication signals. This neutralizing conductor is not an element essential for every application of the sysomitted simply by leaving ofi the conductor. y I
It is desirable that a system of this type be adapted to 'operate over trunks subject to high
