HORSE HAY-RAKE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,219, dated February 1, 1881. Application filed May 25, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. WALKER, of Somerset, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse Hay- Rakes and I do hereby declare that the tollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,- which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.

This invention relates to an improved horse hay-rake, the construction of which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent the thills, which are connected by crosspieces B (l D, the former of which also serves as a foot-board for the driver. The rakehead E, which is hinged to the rear ends of the thills, is equipped with teeth F of the ordinary construction, and provided at the ends with spindles for the wheels G. Rake'head E is provided with upward-projecting lugs H H, supporting the drivers seat, which consists, essentially, of two planks or boards, I J, secured together at one end, and having a strip, K, interposed between them, so as to impart suflicient elasticity to make the seat comfortable. The upper seat-bar, J, is provided with side rails and back L M. The lower one, I, is provided at the connected end with a downward-projecting rod, N by which it is pivoted to one of the lugs, H. At its free end it has a bracket, 0, by which it is pivoted to the other lug, H, of the rake-head, as shown.

P is a hand-lever, pivoted to the forward end of bracket 0, and having its lower end pivoted to a lug or bracket, Q, extending rearward from the cross-piece O. A pin, R, ex tending laterally from the bracket 0, forms a stop for lever P, when it is raised for the purpose of lowering the rake-teeth. When the lever P is lowered it may be retained in position by a catch, S, upon the cross-piece D.

By pivoting the seat in the manner described upon the hinged rake-head the latter may be adjusted so as to either raise or lower the teeth, and held in position by the weight of the driver.

It will also be seen that by placing his feet upon the foot-board the driver may so pose himself as to adjust the rake-head without the assistance of the hand-lever, the principal use of the latter being to start the movement.

T is a rock-shaft, journaled in suitable bearings under the cross-piece O, and provided with a forward-extending lever, U, and rear- Ward-extending arms V V, carrying a crosspiece, W, provided with rearward-extending fingers or tines X X, disposed between the rake-teeth F, as shown. The lever U is capable of being retained under a catch, Y, upon the cross-piece D. When in this position the tines X form or act as cleaners for the raketeeth, their operation as such being well known and understood.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, inexpensive, durable, and easily managed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, in a hay-rake, ot'thehinged rake-head E, having lugs H H, pivoted springseat I J, having rod N and bracket 0, and the lever P, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
