Be it known that I, J AooBPLUEss, of Prairie du Sac, in the county of Sank and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to so construct a boot or shoe as to prevent its running over on one side, and also prevent ripping of seams caused by the bending of the boot or shoe at the shank.

The invention consists in providing a boot or shoe with a strengthening-strip of leather interposed between the outer edge portion of the inner sole and the upper, which overlaps said stift'enin g-strip, and is fastened to the said inner sole, thereby to form a support for the heel, ball, and shank portions of the shoe, to prevent bending or twisting at the shank and running over or wearing the boot or shoe heel more on one side than the other.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an under-side view (partially in section) of a shoe madein accordance with myinvention, the outer sole being removed and the shank-piece being bent back to show the inner sole. Fig. 2 is an under-side View of an inner sole with the strengthening-strip attached, and Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 2 on the linew 00.

In my improved shoe the upper A, middle sole, B, shank-piece U, inner sole, D, and outer sole (not shown) are to be all arranged as usual.

Interposed between the outer edge of the inner sole, D, and upper A is a stiffening or supporting strip, E, of leather, leather-board, or other stiff and suitable material. This stifiening-strip E extends from the end of the heel over the shank and ball portions of the shoe, and along the outer under edge of the inner sole, betweenit and the portion of the upper which overlaps the bottom of the inner sole. The stiffening-strip is attached to the bottom of the inner sole and the upper by means of 5 nails, pegs, or stitches extending through the said strip, upper, and inner sole.

By placing the stiffening strip E, as described, between the bottom of the inner sole and upper, the seat for the usual heel-rand is left level, and the heel, when finished, is of the same height on both sides.

The improved stiffening-strip forms a simple and effective stifiening and support for the shoe at its heel, shank, and ball portion, and prevents all'runnin g over at the heel and ripping of seams in consequence of the shoe turning or bending at the shank. The stiffeningstrip E also holds the boot or shoe in shape at the shank and prevents it from sinking at this point, which is of considerable importance, as it prevents the foot from being forced down against the toe of the shoe and being pinched, which is a common objection to shoes of the ordinary construction.

My invention is especially applicable to ladies high or ogee heel boots, which, as ordinarily made, are very liable to turn and run over.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A boot or shoe re-enforcedby a strip of leather secured between the outer edge portion of the inner sole and the under-turned portion of the upper .by suitable fastening, and extendingfrom the heel to or beyond the shank,

as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a boot or shoe, the combination, with the upper A and the inner sole, D, of the stiffening-strip E, interposed between the outer edge of the said upper and inner sole, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
