2 Claims.
This invention relates to covers for containers, preferably of a general character disclosed, for example, in Patents No. 1,774,511 of September 2, 1930, issued to Irving Hill et al., and No 2,288,707 of July 7, 1942, issued to Irving Hill, and more particularly to an arrangement for applying covers to containers.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a convenient, efficient and economical cover together with related devices for facilitating attaching the cover'to and securing same to a containerjto lprovide 'for easily detaching the cover or a part thereof from a container to inspect the contents of or remove said cover from the container for re-use or other purposes; to
provide integral means on the cover for securing same to a container; to provide a cover and a' container structure which may -be closed without the use of tape, stitching or metal fasteners; to provide a container cover capable of being knocked down before or after use and shippedfiat to a point of use; to provide access to the locking device of the cover for releasing same; to provide locking members on the cover which are held in place by contact with the container; and to provide improved elements and `arrangements thereof in container covers of the character and for the purposes 'set forth.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the present invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawing,
, wherein:
tia-lly on the line 4 4, Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal cross-section through the end of a container and cover illustrated in Fig. 1 substantially on the line 5 5, thereof, particularly illustrating the tongue lock.
Fig. 6 is av detail horizontal cross-section through a corner of the container and cover, particularly illustrating a modified arrangement of the locking tongue.
Referring more in detail to the drawing: i designates a container, which is preferably of the general type disclosed in the patents above mentioned, and which preferably includes a bottom wall 2, side walls 3 and 4 and end walls 5 and 6, side flaps 1 and 8 being provided on the upper edges of the side walls if desired. The upper edges of the end Walls of the container are preferably pro-vided with flanges 9 and IIB, which may be folded outwardly and downwardly to form hook or like members.
II designates a cover, preferably of substantially the same size, shape andA material as theL container, the cover constituting a body member preferably having inner end flanges I2 and I3 foldable over the container end wall flanges. The anges I2 and I3 have fold lines I4 and I5 spaced from the end edges of the cover member to form outer end flanges I6 and Il and adapt the flanges for folding` under and/or behind the container anges 9 and I0. The cover end flanges thus, in l effect, form hook or like members interengageable with the container hook members for applying the cover in closing relation to the container.
In order `to aid in maintaining the container and cover hook members in interengaged` relation and to further enhance confinement of the contents of the container, the cover II is preferably provided with side flanges I8 and I9 which are foldable over the upper edges of the side walls of the container. y
The side flanges of the cover have tabs 20 and 2| that fold on score lines 22 and 23 adjacent the corners of the container to overlap the cover end `flanges I2 and I3. It has been found desirable to provide spaced slots 24 and 25 in the end flanges of the cover which slots are preferably of a length to extend substantially the full width of the inner end flanges I2 and I3 so that tongue extensions 26 and 21 of the tabs 20 and 2I may be applied to and extend through said slots to positively lock the flanges and tabs of the cover and container in interengaged relation.
` In order to additionally secure the flanges and lock the tongue extensions in place, the tabs 29 and 2| are preferably provided with score lines 28 and 29 making said tabs of substantially the same length as the'spacing of the slots 2i and Z5 container flanges for producing considerable resistance to change, thereby holding the respective parts in interengaged and locking condition.
Removal of the cover from the container to l which it is applied is preferably facilitated by providing the end flanges I2 and I3 with apertures 32 to permitpassage of a finger, orother-object to enga-ge the container end flanges 9 and I0 and release same from engagement with the cover i outer end flanges I6 and Il to permit lifting off the cover from said container, one end preferably l being disengaged at a time.
In attaching a cover to a container both of which are constructed as described,.the, side'andf cover are preferably folded over the end flange 1 end flaps of the cover member are foldeddown-l wardly and the tabs 20 and 2I on one end of said I3 and the tongues 26 and ZTI-are applied to and' i extended through the apertures 24 and 2,5in said end flange, said tongues 26 and 21 preferably being folded over and behind the cover flange I3. This end of the coverl may then beapplied to one end vof the container'land theouter'flangel'lis folded upwardly and inwardly/toI engage under or behind'the flange Ill of the. container. The container side flaps being-foldedl inwardly, the other`4 endof the cover may then be loweredto cover the Theside flaps i open upper end of said container. of the cover fit/,over the upper outer edges-of the container side walls.,
The end' flange I2 of thecoveris foldeddowni wardly and the cuter end flangey I6 thereof folded inwardly and upwardly to engage under orbehindf l the container flange 9. @then preferably folded to overlie the endflange 3 IZ and the tongues ZQand-e'i areinserted' in slots i 24. and 25- and folded backwardlyover theinner face of saidend flange I-2' in such a mannerfthat it liesbetw-eensaid end anges 521 and I SanctisV engaged with the outer faceof the-container endV fiange); Thetendency of theelements to return toflat condition. causes. the end flangesrandl to exert. pressure outwardlyl to holdV the tongues. l
