CHUCK FOR COIL WINDING MACHINES Filed Sept. 7, 1943 Patented Feb. 27, 1945 601B WINDING MACHINES John William. Miller, London, England; assig nor to Goodinaxns" Industries Limited, WembIey,
Mi'dill'esex, England; a: British company Application September 7, 1943,. ScriaLNot 501,490. InGrcat Britain December 31,. 1-942 invention. relates'to chucksfoncoil wind ing. machines. and more; especially to chucks for. use in winding coils on microphone or. telephone cone diaphragms.
Whilst the chuck is; applicable to coil. winding machines: generally it is more especially appli cable to.- electrical. coil winding; machines as de scribed in my co-pending application. Serial No. 477,8833filed March 3,1943.
In the. case of cone diaphragms for microphones the position: of; the: coil relatively to the; cone. is important as the characteristics of the: conerdepend; on thepositi'on. of 11610011.
In. the case of multi-layer: coils provision must also be made to ensure that. the separate layers are.correctlysuperimposed.
It is'theobiect. of the present. inventiom to pro vide a chuck by means of which. the-coil is correctly positioned. relatively'to the. cone: of. a micro.-
phone: diaphragm.
A further object of the invention; is to provide a. chuck which. ensures that, the separate: layers ofv a multi-layer coil are correctly positioned and guided; on. to acyl indrical. extension of the cone.
Another object of. the invention is: to provide means for clamping the diaphragm in. position whilst one or morezlayersof coil. are; being, wound onthe-cylindrica'l extensiom the. correct position. relatively to the coneof; the
diaphragm.
According to the present. invention achuck. for an. electrical coil winding, machine, is provided with a fixed cheek, shaped; to conform. with the shape of a diaphragm: having a conical. portion and. a. cylindrical extension on which. latter one or more layers of coil are. to. be. wound thercylindrical extension being adapted to be. engaged by aformer which islocated between: the fixed cheek and a removable cheek and ispressedagainst. the fixed check by a nut bearing againstthe'removable. cheek and screwing on a. screwed spindle secured tothe fixed cheek, whilsta. guide, for psitioning. one. or more layers. of coil to. bewound on the cylindrical portion. of the diaphragm, is provided. for. positioning the. layer or. layers of coil whilst being wound on. the. cylindricalportibn.
The. guide is, preferably formed of two diametrically separated parts which. are; held inpositicn magnetically.
The. guide. may be of.v such. a. shape. as. to. con;-
formwiththe shape of. the diaphragm and thus serve toclampthe: diaphmagm. against. the fixed; cheelc.
The. invention will now bedescribed withlreterence to the accompanying drawing showing. by way of. example, a magnetic chuck for. use in winding a. coil,., formed oi oneor more layers, ona. cylir-1drical.-v extension of. a cone diaphragm for amicrophonei. Inthi-sdrawing-- Fig. 1 shows. a side elevation of. the chuck,
Fig. 2; shows a longitudinal section of the chuck;
Fig. 3 shows a view ot a. clamping. member; and
Fig; 4 shows1 a. view oiitheileaitv hand end at the chuck, with the clamping memben. diaphragm, movable cheek. andnutzremovem As shown in. the drawing the chuck is provided with a. soft. iron. end plate I: and analuminium end plate 2 which are secured to a soft. iron tube-3 r The tube: 3. is. adapted to be secured to a.- shaf -t 3d of acoil windingmachinei Between. the end plates is located a tubular per.- manent magnet 4 preferably at ferrous; alloy containingv aluminium andnickeh. with or with? out cobalt, for example the alloy known on. the market under the. name. Alnicoi The: end plate'Z- iszsecured. to a soft. iron; plate 5 ct whichthe left-hand: face; isg shaped to: core form with: the shape or. the: diaphragm 6..
The; plates I", 2, 5 with the: magnet l'hetween the plates. I, 2 are secured. togetherzby screws. 1...
Around. the plates. t, 2 is securedaicasingz 8-of soft iron.
The. assembly so. far. described is. adapted to. be secured to. the shaft 3a by means. of set. screws of whichone is shown at. 9.
In. the. plate 2 are secured soft. iron pins l! of. circular cross. section which fitinto, holes I 2 of" larger diameter in. the plate 5' whereby allaps arei'ormed.
Thediaphragm 6 is provided with a. cylindrical portion l3, on which one or more layers; of coil I4 are to be wound, a conical portion 1'5" and a that flange l6 by which it is adapted to be secured in a microphone.
The plate 5 has a conical face 1''!" and a fiat face lt8' which conform with the cone; I and the. flange l fire'spectlvely; a I
The plate 5 is also provided with a flat face- 1'9 against; which bearsa former 20" for receiving the cylindrical. portion l3 of" the diaphragm 61.
The plate" 5, which formsthe. fixed check for the... chuck, 'i'salso' provided with a flange H1- which serves. as an abutment; for a. guide; 21'. provided With a peripheral rim 22 which isguided by the cylindrical portion 23 of the plate '5. The face of the guide adjacent the diaphragm conforms with the shape of the conical portion I5 and flange I'G of the diaphragm 6.
As shown in Fig. 3 the guide 2| is formed of two parts 24, 25 which are separated along a diametral line 26 so that they can be slid over and off the diaphragm B conveniently.
The guide 2| servesto clamp the diaphragm 6 against a plate 5 as it forms the armature of the magnet 4 by which it is attracted! The attractive force of the magnet 4 is such that it holds the guide 2| in position whilst the coil I4 is being wound on the cylindrical portion l3 cf the diaphragm 6.
The parts 24, 25 are provided with notches 2! in one or other of which the wire of the coil I4 can be nipped so as to hold it firmly whilst the coil 6 is being wound.
The central portion 28 of the guide 2| is located in a plane at right angles to the axis of the cylindrical portion l3 and is made of the necessary thickness to determine the position of the first turn of the coil I4 on the cylindrical portion I3. The guide 2| also serves to position the various layers in the case of a multi-layer coil I4.
The former is clamped in position by a removable cheek 29 of which the face adjacent the former 2|! is provided with a recess of two different diameters '30, 3|, the larger diameter serving to receive the cylindrical portion I3 and the smaller diameter the former 20.
The removable cheek 29 is preferably milled on its periphery.
The removable cheek 29 is fitted on a screw threaded spindle 32 and is forced against the former 20 by a nut 33 which is preferably milled on its periphery.
For the purpose of mounting a diaphragm 6 in the chuck in order to wind a coil l4 on the cylindrical portion I3 thereof the nut 33, removable cheek 29 and guide 2| are removed from the spindle '32. The removal of the guide 2| facilitated asits two parts 24, can be slid laterally oil? the plate 5. 1
A diaphragm '5, mounted on a'former 20, is now passed over the spindle 32, the diaphragm B being placed against the plate 5 and the former 2 0 engaging with the fiat surface l9 of the'plate *5. The two halves 24, 25 of the guide 2| are now placed in position and as the guide 2| is attracted by the magnet 4, the diaphragm is consequently held in position against the plate '5. The removable cheek 29 and the nut 33 are placed in position on the spindle 32, the nut 33 being tightened to hold the cheek 29 and the former 20 in position on the spindle. The wire of the coil I4 is engaged with one of the notches 21 and the spindle 32 is ready for being driven so as to wind the coil I 4 in one or more layers on the cy1indrical portion 3 of the diaphragm B.
