1 Claim.

My invention relates to improvements in collapsible beds, the principal object in view being to provide a simply constructed, knock-down bed which may be inexpensively manufactured in various sizes, and which may be quickly and easily set up, or assembled, with a minimum of effort, is light in weight, yet rigid and strong, and in which all metal is eliminated.

Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, to-

gether with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the suc ceeding description and claimare read with reference to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, my improved bed, as illustrated, comprises a headboard I and a footboard 2 both of which may be formed inexpensively of pressed fiberboard, or similar material, and which are of like width with intermediate downwardly converging side edge portions 3 and provided with short legs, as at 4. A pair of rectangular notches 5 are provided in the top edge of each board I, 2, adjacent the upper corners 6 of said boards, and are equidistantly spaced apart in said pairs. A pair of upper side rails 8 of square form in cross section are provided for securing the boards I, 2, together at the upper corners 6 thereof, and asimilar pair of lower side rails 9 are provided for securing the converging edge portions 3 of said boards I, 2, together. The upper rails 8 are provided with a pair of notches ID in one side thereof, adjacent the ends of said rails, for interlocking with the corner notches 5. The notches 5 and III are of a depth such that when the upper side rails 8 are applied, one side of said rails is flush with the top edges of the boards I, 2. The lower side rails 9 are notched, as at II, adjacent opposite ends of the same to slidably hook over the converging side edge portions 3 of said boards.

The sides and bottom of the bed are formed by a sheet I2 of canvas, or the like, having upper side edge hems I3 through which the upper side rails 8 may be slidably extended, it being understood that said sheet I2 fits between the boards I, 2. The sheet [2 is of the requisite length to extend, when tightened or drawn taut, under the lower side rails 9, when the latter are applied. The sheet 12 may be stretched taut in applyin or attaching, the lower side rails 9 by pressing said rails 9 down along the converging sideedge portions 3.

As will be clear, when the side rails 9 are connected to the side portions 3, in the manner described, and the sheet I2 thus stretched, said portions 3, because of their divergence upwardly, will tend to prevent the rails from creeping upwardly and will thereby maintain the sheet I2 taut. As will also be seen, the taut sheet I2 braces the entire structure so that further bracing is unnecessary.

To knock down, or disassemble, the described bed, it is merely necessary to raisethe lower side rails 9 separately and then lift the upper side rails 8 out of the notches 5. The side rails 8, 9 may then be rolled up in the sheet I2 for storage or other purposes with said boards I, 2.

The foregoing-will, it is believed, suflice to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation.

Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modificaton without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is:

A collapsible bed comprising a pair of solid head and foot boards, a pair of upper side rails having ends fitting over the top edges of said boards inwardly of the upper corners of said boards and interlocking therewith, a pair of lower side rails having notched ends fitting snugly over the side edges of said boards, and a sheet of flexible material attached at its side edges to the pair of upper side rails and extending under the lower pair of side rails, the top edges of said boards having square notches therein spaced from said corners and the ends of said upper rails having square notches therein spaced from the ends of the rails and for interlocking engagement of the notches inthe rails with the. notches in said boards, said side edges diverging upwardly to prevent the notched ends of the lower side rails from creeping upwardly thereon.
