BY: 2 ATTO EY Patented Feb. 27, 1945 SAMPLING DEVICE Sidney J. Roblson, New York, N. Y., assignor to Universal Atlas Cement Company, a corporation of Indiana Application April 30, 1943, Serial No. 485.251
Claims. (Cl. 73-422) This invention relates to a sampling device' for sampling material which is carried at a high velocity by compressed air pressure through a duct. Cement is often transported by this meth- 0d and it is sometimes necessary to obtain samples of the cement while flowing through the duct. Since cement is a very fine material, the sampling devices now in common use are not suitable for obtaining the samples.
It is an object of my invention to provide a sampling device for obtaining samples of cement as it flows through a duct under pressure.
This and other objects will be more apparent after referring to the following specification and attached drawing in which the single figure is a sectional elevation of the sampling device.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 2 indicates a duct through which cement is being carried by compressed air pressure. Welded to the duct 2 is an air tight box 4 to which is attached a detachable sample container 6. The box 4 is fitted with a valve 8. A sampling tube Ill passes through the box 4 and slides in a metal guide l2 welded to the duct 2 and also through a packed gland or guide l4 welded to the box 4. The top of the tube I0 is closed by means of a plug l6 and a second plug I8 is inserted in the tube It some distance irom the end thereof. thus forming a passageway 20 having an inlet 22 below the plug I6 and an outlet 24 above the plug l8. A spring 24 surrounds the lower end of the tube l0 and tends to hold the tube in a retracted position by exerting pressure on an abutment 34 attached thereto. The tube I0 is raised and lowered by a connecting rod 26 which is actuated by a cam 28 driven by a motor 30 through a speed reducer 32.
The operation of the device is as follows:
In its normal or retracted position, the top of the tube is flush with the upper surface of guide l2. When it is desired to obtain a sample of cement. the motor 30 is actuated to rotate the cam 28, thus raising the connecting rod 26 and compressing the spring 24 betweenan abutment 36 on the guide I4 and the abutment 34 fastened to the tube Ill. The valve 8 is opened to permit a certain amount of air to escape from the sampling container 4 so that there will be a flow of air and material through the sampling tube. By varying the amount of air escaping from the container 4. the pressure inside the sampling tube is changed, thus controlling the rate of flow of the air through the sampling tube and the amount of cement drawn from the duct Ill) 2 at each stroke or the sampler. The motor 30 is then actuated to lower the tube In into retracted position, the spring 24 forcing the tube downwardly as the cam 28 rotates. The sample container 6 is detached from the box 4 and a new sample container S substituted therefor. If desired, the motor 30 may be controlled by a timing switch which will operate at predetermined intervals to thrust the tube l0 upwardly into the stream of the material flowing from the duct 2 and to retract it to its normal position.
While one embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it will be apparent that other adaptations and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the attached claims.
I claim:
