When the plate is struck by the punch of the press the outer end of the plate flies upwardly as the punch l6 s e plate as by means strikes. Unless the outer end of the plate is held f a hook l7, ring I 8 and a clamp is applied in this new position, it will drop back to its origthe plate. Associated with shaft 28 at its plate flies upwardly. 40 other end is a one-way clutch and brake 40 which The present invention l b t understood acts to hold the arm 22 in its raised position when upon consideration of the following detailed dethe Outer end of plate s upw yy scription of an illustrative embodiment thereof Suitable form of e sab e brake such as shown when read in conjunction with the accompanying in t e Patent issued April 1904,

bodying the plate handling device of the present Briefly described the operation is as follows:
invention; and When a plate I2 is to have a flange formed along Figure 2 is a front elevational view, partly i its inner edge the latter is positioned between section, of the upper part of the press illustrating the punch l0 and die M with the major portion apparatus for traversing the armor the workof the plate resting on the table l5. .Clamp I9 handling device across the front of the press. is mounted at the outer edge of the p ate and In Figure 1 there is illustrated part of a meconnected by ring I8 to the hook I! at the lower chanical press having a punch or working blade end of cable l6, winch 24 having previously been 10 which is'moved downwardly under great presoperated t D t as h table as q d- I8 is taken up as the arm 22 is moved clockwise under the torque applied thereto by the air motor 38. At this time the brake 40 prevents reverse movement of arm 22 and obviates oscillations of the outer end of the plate l2 and holds it in its upper position even though the supply of air to the :motor 38 might be cut ofi. Hence, a second striking operation, if required, may be performed to complete the operation because the outer part of plate l2 does not fall back on table 15,
When it is desired to remove the plate from the press, the punch I0 is raised and the winch 24 may be operated to pay out cable l6 so as to lower the plate. Alternatively, the supply of air to the air motor 38 may be cut off and its piston cylinder vented. Thereupon the brake 40 may be released by means of the cord 42 so as to permit arm 22 to turn counterclockwise, thereby allowing the outer part of the plate to fall back upon the supporting table.
Although an illustrative embodiment of the invention has been described in detail herein, there are many changes and variations that may be made without departing from the essentials of the invention and, therefore, it is desired and intended to include all such changes and variations within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In a mechanical press or the like having a punch and die for performing an operation on a workpiece partly mounted on the die with the major portion of the work piece projecting outwardly from the press, wherein engagement of the punch against the work piece causes the outer end of the latter to fly upwardly; an arm pivotally mounted on the press above its punch and die and projecting'outwardly from the (press in the'same direction as the work piece; a cable connected to said arm and also to said work piec adjacent its outer end; and means continuously applying an upwardly directed force to said arm so as to rock it upwardly for taking up the slack produced in said cable as the outer end of the work piece moves upwardly when the work piece is struck by said punch.
