Referring more particularly to the drawings in detail, I5 designates a vertical support such as a wall, board or plate mounted against or in a wall designed to support the cabinet thus obviating the necessity of employing a floor stand so that valuable floor space may be otherwise used. Secured to the vertical support I5 is a back mounting plate I6 preferably of metal having right angular or outstanding vertical or parallel side flanges I I designed to removably support the frame or mechanism of the device. As shown, these side flanges are provided with a plurality of bayonet slots I8 opening at the top through the edges of the flanges to receive outstanding pins I9 projectin from the side plates 2!] and 2I of the frame of the machine which supports the mechanism as a unit. If desired, three of such pins and bayonet slots may be provided, the pins I9 engaging the upper and lower slots and the intermediate slots being engaged by clamping screws 22 engaging threaded apertures in the plates 29 and 2| instead of providing pins I9 to engage the slots, so as to hold the frame from vertical displacement but permit removal thereof should occasion arise. The frame also includes upper and lower spacing and connecting or tie rods 23 and 24 havin reduced ends forming shoulders to engage the inner faces of the side plates and 2I so as to rigidly hold the same in uniform spaced relation parallel to each other with screws anchoring the ends of the rods at the outsides of the plates. The bottom edges of the plates 26 and 2I are provided with apertured ears 25 near their inner and lower corners and the cabinet or housing 26 which is shown as being substantially of rectangular form and open at the back is provided with a bottom opening 21 flanged inwardly around the bottom edge, while the cabinet may be pivoted or hinged to the mechanism or frame near the lower rear corner of the machine to enable it to swing forwardly and downwardly to serve as a container for holding the clean towel roll, towel guide, soiled towel roll or any other articles which might otherwise be mlislaid or difiicult to manipulate during the loading of the machine. In the form shown, the bottom flanges or sides of the cabinet are shown provided with inwardly extending pivot pins 28 projecting in to engage the apertures of the pivot ears or lugs 25. The cabinet is sufficiently resilient to permit the sides to be separated so that the pins will spring into the apertures when the spreading pressure is released. Thus, the cabinet may be swung down beneath the frame with its open side upwardly so as to conveniently receive and retain as well as render accessible any parts placed therein. When closed, it is swung upwardly and may be held locked by any suitable means to prevent access to the interior of the cabinet. As shown, a locking screw 29 is provided in the top wall of the cabinet adjacent the open side and edge thereof which may be operated by a socket or plug wrench or key to engage the keeper or aperture of an angle bracket 30' secured to the mounting plate I6. If desired, a mirror 3| may be provided at the front of the cabinet and held at the back by a removable plate 32 .over an opening in the front of the cabinet with suitable interposed cushion packing to pre-- vent breakage of the mirror.
A bottom plate 33 is provided for the cabinet but is supported between the side plates 29 and 2 I of the frame and this bottom also serves as a separator between the clean toweling roll and the ascending soiled toweling and can be swung clear of the back of the machine or back mounting plate I6 to provide ready access thereto for simplifying the task of loading as will be hereinafter more fully explained. The front edge of the bottom plate 33 is shown rolled or curled up as at 34 spaced from the front wall or bottom edge of the front portion of the cabinet and at the back or rear corner is curved upwardly as indicated at 35 over the lower rod 24 to receive and support the clean towel roll when the same becomes small. The feeding and winding or take-up rollers F and W constituting the friction or sand rollers are substantially alike in construction and each comprises a tubular cylinder or tube 82 of metal or other suitable material and provided with aligned longitudinal slots 83 near each end through which the tapered ends 84 of a spirally wound emery or sand paper strip 85 are bent, inserted and anchored, the strip being suitably anchored or glued to the cylinder if desired. The ends of the cylinder are provided with spaced segmental notches 3e equidistantly spaced apart and preferably three in number forming corresponding intermediate projections 07. Disks 88 forming webs or beads fit the notched ends of the cylinder or body and for this purpose are provided with spaced projections 89 to enter the notches 80 and corresponding notches 90 to receive the projections 81 to reinforce and close the ends of the tubes as well as connect the cylinder and disks to cause them to rotate together. The disks or webs fit snugly in the ends of the cylinders and are provided with outwardly pro jecting tubular flanges or hubs 9I forming spacing means between the disks and the frame members 20 and 2i and receiving shouldered tubular trunnions 92 which are keyed to the disks 88 and the hubs 9 I, to turn therewith. The tubular trunnions 92 are provided with two opposite flattened surfaces 93 at their outer portions anda peripheral groove 94 circumscribing the same and intersecting the flattened portions. Flanged bearings 9-5 are mounted on the trunnions 92 and have their flanges positioned within and against the inner face of the plate 20 adjacent the hub 9i at one side of the frame. At the opposite side a separate or removable bearing plate 96 is bolted to the plate 2| and has a sleeve or hub 9'! extending into an opening 98 of larger diameter than the hub 9I as seen in Fig. '2. Screws 99 secure the plate 98 in position and a tie rod I00 extends through the roller and the tubular trun-' nions or bearings 92 and have their threaded ends anchored as by nuts IOI engaging threaded ends of the tie rod thus ,to hold the parts in assembled relation and against end thrust by engagement with the ends of the tubular trunnions or bearings 92. At one side of the frame, sprockets I02 are mounted on the flattened portions 93 of the trunnions and fixed by a set screw I03 while an endless drive member or chain I04 is trained around the sprocket wheels to cause the friction rollers to rotate in unison. They are held in position by spring cotter pins I05 which engage the annular grooves 94 at one end, preferably the right side of the machine although this is optional. The corresponding end of the winding roller W is provided with a ratchet wheel I06 on the flattened portion of the trunnions 92 with its hub or collar between the plate 96 and the hub or collar of the sprocket wheel I02 At the bottom roll F there is no ratchet wheel but the collar is retained (see Fig. 4). The teeth I01 of the ratchet wheel I06 are engaged by a pawl I08 pivoted at I09 to a boss on the plate 2I and held by a spring IIO into engagement with the teeth I01 so as to prevent backward or retrograde movement of the winding roller so that the soiled towel cannot be unwound from the soiled towel roller and'so that the parts can only be driven in one direction tending to feed the clean toweling and wind the soiled toweling. The ratchet wheel I06 has a spacing sleeve or hub I06a extending to the plate 96. A collar IBM is mounted to take up space'on the trunnion 92 of roller F at the bottom in lieu of the ratchet wheel I06 and its sleeve or hub I06a as previously described. However, this construction permits quick removal and replacing of a friction roller by simply removing the nuts IOI, rods I00 and drive parts by removing the screws 99 of the plates 96 so that the hubs 9| at one side can be displaced through the corresponding openings 98 and the webs or disks set in the ends of the body 82 displaced outwardly so that the body or cylinder can be removed and a new one inserted and secured in position. Thus, the notched construction of the friction or sand rolls 82 where the disks or webs 83 set into the ends of the body or cylinder of the roll forms axially displaceable connections between the ends of the cylinders 82 and the disks or webs 88 which enables replacement of the worn friction or sand surface by substitution of the body only with another body having a new friction or sand surface thereon, by reason of the separate bearing plates 96 at the right hand or side plate 2| and the entire removal and substitution can be effected without disassembling the machine. The tie rod construction of the assembly converts any transverse lo-ad on the sand roll hubs into a lineal stress on the tie rod and not on the web assembly alone. Thus, if under extreme abuse something must give way, the resulting deformity will only be the stripping of the threads on the tie red by failure of the cylinder and its sprocket wheel to turn together because the nuts IOI are jammed against the bearing sleeves or trunnions 92 at the threads. Thus, the hubs will be slightly loose on the trunnions 92 but not broken and the machine will not be out of service. The cost of this common type repair is reduced to just a fraction of the usual cost or entirely eliminated by this construction.
The control mechanism of the machine for the feeding, winding, timing and time release mechanism is preferably mounted at the left hand end of the lower friction or feeding roller adjacent the plate 20 at the outside and for this purpose a spur gear or pinion I I I is mounted on the fiattened portions 93 of the trunnion 92 and is held in position by a spring cotter pin I I2 at that side. The gear III is also held by keys II3 fitting the flattened portions 93 and registering recesses in the gear as shown in Fig. 2. A gear II4 meshes with the gear I I I and cooperates with other gears to intermittently check the advanc of the towel feeding roller F and the timed release thereof as fully shown and described in my prior application, Serial No. 376,575, above referred to and of aee'rgeoa necessity- 015'threading'the toweling web or-strip so which this application is a continuation part. The pinch 'roller and guide assembly .or frame is then inserted in position by engaging the notches with the pivots 46 and swinging the samerearwardly and downwardly on said pivots over the feed roll F so that the pinch roller P will frictionally engage and press in the toweling on roll C to pass or snap by the periphery of the clean toweling roll C and move below the idle roller I permitted by the slots I in which the spindle 50 of the pinch roller P is journaled and the normal tendency of the springs 53 to hold the pinch roller at the inner ends of the slots. The placing of the clean toweling roll C in position as previously explained will cause the toweling T to pass over the feeding roller F and the idle roller I so that when the pinch roller assembly is placed in position as just described, the pinch roller will loop or press the toweling downwardly by pressure thereon between the idle roller I and the feeding roller F and will place the pinch roller and toweling under tension by pressure against the feeding roller F from the springs 53 due to the inclination of the slots SI and the tangential relation or convergency thereof toward the periphery of the feeding roller F and the tendency of the springs 53 to press or hold the pinch roller against the feeding roller F and toweling thereon below its axis I00 and at the same time the guard plate or guide 43 will be positioned over the feeding roller and the assembly or frame held in position by engagement of the notches 48 with the pins or lugs 49. The pinch roll is contained in an assembly which serves as a toweling guide and is separable from the rest of the mechanism thereby positioning the pinch roller after the toweling has been thrown or placed in position. This makes threading of the toweling unnecessary. Also, owing to the fact that the pinch roller is positioned under spring tension, no towel slippage is required to set the pinch roller firmly and in position pressing against the feeding roller with the interposed toweling. Most, if not all other machines, require motion of the toweling to accomplish this function. The machine is now ready to operate and when a clean wiping section of toweling is desired, the user merely grasps the clean toweling depending below the machine at the open bottom below the feeding roller F and adjacent the curled portion 34 and a downward pull is exerted thereon. Due to the frictional engagement of the toweling with the feeding roller F, the latter will be rotated as well as the pinch roller P and the idle roller I to unwind the toweling from the clean towel roll C; Due to the feeding and winding rollers being positively connected by the chain I04 on the sprocket wheels I02, the winding or take-up roller W will be rotated in the same direction as the feeding roller F thereby advancin the soiled toweling around the winding roller and causing it to be wound on the soiled towel roller S by reason of the latter and the toweling thereon being pressed against the winding roller W by the springs I6 which elevate the bearings 70 in the slots I2. By holding the soiled toweling roll in contact with the takeup or winding roller by spring tension instead of depending upon the gravity as in most, if not all other machines, this produces a more uniformly and tightly wound roll of soiled toweling, thus reducing the space requirement of the roll. The floating separator or plate 63 which can assume any position required by the changing sizes and positions of the toweling rolls is used to effect a conservation of space by using the space given up by the diminishing clean roll to accommodate the increasing size of the soiled towel roll.
In order to regulate the feedingor advancing of the toweling as well as the winding and the time interval of the perceptible or discernible signal which, as explained in my prior application, Serial No. 376,575, heretofore referred to herein, is audible in this instance due to the buzzing sound of the operation of the gears of the timing or clock mechanism I I5 and thus indicate to the user when the device is inoperative or when the toweling may not be pulled out, as well as give an audible, discernible or erceptible signal continuously during the period when the towel is normally used for the wiping operation or the period while held between the time when the towel is pulled or moved out and the time when it may be moved again, the following operation takes place. When the toweling is pulled to rotate the feeding roller F and the winding roller W, the latter will be permitted to rotate by the pawl I08 riding over the teeth of the ratchet wheel I06 but restraining the same against reverse rotation so that the toweling cannot be unwound from the soiled towel roller. By reason of the novel ratio of feeding, winding timing and time release mechanism, whereby the friction feeding and winding rollers are advanced other than an integral number of revolutions each time a length of toweling is pulled down or out for use and arranging the toweling so as to cause the strip of toweling to extend around or engage with the friction surfaces on said rollers at the major or practicable maximum portions of their peripheries, but more particularly by causing the engagement of the pinch roller P with the roller F as well as the soiled towel roller S with the winding or take-up roller W at a different point on the periphery of the feeding and winding rollers respectively when stopped after each cycle of operation or moving of the toweling to advance a clean section to wiping position thereby preventing undue wear on the friction surfaces on said rollers at any particular point as where the same point on the roller F stops in confronting position to the pinch roller P or one point on the winding roller W stops in confronting position to the soiled towel roller S at each operation, increase in the useful life of the roller surfaces is insured. In the particular arrangement shown, a different surface will be presented to the pinch roller for every multiple of four operations before repeating and before the same point is again contacted thereby preventing undue wear on the friction surfaces, emerypaper or sand paper of the friction or sand rollers constituting the feeding andwinding rollers and increasing the useful life of said roller surfaces a multiple 1 of or approximately four times their ordinary life. Theconstruction of the means for supporting and feeding the clean toweling as well as winding up the soiled toweling, the arrangement of the rollers and the manner in which the toweling is run through the machine as well as the construction of the rollers for feeding and winding up the toweling and the arrangement of the pinch roller P and the soiled towel roller S held under constant spring pressure against the respective feeding and winding rollers F and W respectively insure uniform, even and positive feeding and winding of the toweling as it moves down at the front and up at the back. 1. In a towel i dispensing device of the class described, a--vertical support, a housing hinged to the support at the-bottom and open at the bottom '75--=and baok whereof, "towel holding and feeding means secured to the support independent of the housing to partially close said bottom and provide openings at the front and back to receive the towel therethrough and adapted to feed the towel through the open bottom of the housing, said housing adapted to swing down against the vertical support free of the towel feeding means to form a receptacle and means to lock the housing over the feeding means against the support to close the back of the housing.
2. In a towel cabinet, a lower feeding roller, a pinch roller coacting therewith below the center of the feeding roller at one side, a towel support in spaced relation to the feeding roller from which the towel passes between the feeding roller and the pinch roller under the pinch roller and over the feeding roller, and the pinch roller adapted to pass down against the towel between the towel support and the feeding roller to form a bight in the toweling and take up slack, said towel depending from the cabinet and extending upwardly at the back of the cabinet, a winding roller over which the upwardly extending portion of the towel passes and a soiled towel roller on which the soiled towel is wound, said soiled towel roller being held under pressure against the towel and winding roller.
3. In a towel cabinet, a lower feeding roller, a pinch roller engaging the feeding roller at the lower part of the receiving side thereof, a towel support from which the towel passes over the feeding roller and under the pinch roller, said pinch roller being adapted to be placed in position between the support and feeding roller over the towel after the latter is passed over the feeding roller, said towel depending from the feeding roller and cabinet and extending upwardly at the back of the cabinet, a winding roller, a soiled towel roller, the soiled towel passing between the winding and soiled towel rollers to wind on the latter, means for removably supporting the soiled towel roller and urging the same upwardly in pressure contact with the winding roller, and
means for separating the soiled toweling from the clean toweling.
4. A towel cabinet adapted to be mounted on a vertical support including a back plate securedat the lower portion of the frame, said towel passing up in back of the partition, soiled towel winding means at the top and back portion of the frame, means for actuating the Winding means including a friction roller for causing the used toweling to be so wound during the feeding of the clean toweling as to cause the toweling to depend in a loop of constant length.
5. A towel cabinet having a bottom wall pivotally hung on means in the cabinet at a point spaced from its front edge and an opening at the front thereof through which a towel is adapted to be drawn, a roller above the pivot of the bottom wall, said bottom wall having a rear portion extending upwardly in spaced relation to I the back of the cabinet to receive a clean toweling supply roll thereon against the front surface of said rear portion in conjunction with said roller and adapted to support said supply roll at the bottom when the size of the roll is reduced and to accommodate soiled towel extending upwardly through said second-mentioned space and means for winding the soiled toweling.
6. In a towel cabinet, a lower feeding roller, a pinch-roller frame removably mounted over and conforming in shape to the feeding roller and including a pinch roller movably journaled in the frame and engaging the feeding roller at the back and below the axis thereof, a towel supply roll support from which the towel passes downwardly under the pinch roller and then upwardly between the feeding roller and the pinch roller, said towel then passing over the feeding roller, depending therefrom and extending upwardly at the back, a winding roller and a soiled towel roller on which the soiled towel is wound and means to hold said soiled towe1 under pressure against the winding roller, said towel passing forwardly under and around the soiled towel roller.

A towel cabinet adapted to be mounted on a vertical support including a removably mounted frame, a vertical plate having side flanges, said frame having side plates, pin and bayonet slot connections between the side plates and flanges, a cabinet thereover having a bottom opening, a back plate forming a partition in spaced relation to the vertical plate at the back of the cabinet, upper and lower rods across the frame adjacent the b ack thereof against and over which the towel passes, towel feeding means at the front and lower portion of the frame, means to support a clean towel roll at the lower portion of the frame, said towel passing up in back of the partition, a winding means for winding the toweling as used above the clean towel roll and simultaneously and at the same rate with the feeding thereof.
8. A towel cabinet adapted to be mounted on a vertical support including a frame having sides mounted on the vertical support, a cabinet thereover having a bottom opening, a back plate supported by the sides forming a partition in spaced relation to the vertical support at the back of the cabinet, upper and lower rods across the frame against and over which the towel passes, the top of the back plate being extended forwardly and up in front of the upper rod to allow the towel to pass in front of the rod, towel feeding means at the front and lower portion of the frame, means to support a. clean towel roll at the lower portion of the frame, said towel passing up in back of the partition, a winding means at the top and back portion of the frame and means actuating the winding means for winding the toweling as used above the clean towel roll and simultaneously and at the same rate with the feeding thereof.
9. In a towel cabinet, .a towel supply, towel feeding means, towel winding means, a plate mounted in the cabinet and extending upwardly, a rod over which soiled towel passes, the top of the plate being extended forwardly and rearwardly over the rod and the towel being passed over the rear edgeof the rearwardly extended portion to smooth and stretch the towel and then forwardly to the winding means to wind thereon.
10. In a towel cabinet,'a feeding roll and a winding roll, a lower clean towel roll, an upper soiled towel roll and a centrally pivoted floating separator mounted in the cabinet and positioned between said clean and soiled towel rolls.
11. In a towel cabinet, a frame a back wall, a bottom wall with an upwardly curved rear portion forming a passage with the back: wall through which the towel is adapted to pass,v an idle roller across the lower portion of the cabinet upon which a clean towel supply roll is adapted the axis thereof, and means for receiving and winding the soiled towel as clean towel is unwound from the supply roll and drawn downwardly over the feed roll and beneath the front of the cabinet.
12. In a towel cabinet having front-and back walls, a frame, a bottom wall with a rear portion extending upwardly in spaced relation to the back wall of the cabinet to form apass-age therewith, an idle roller across the lower portion of the cabinet upon which a clean towel supply is adapted to rest in conjunction with the rear portion initially and until reduced in size, said loottom wall being pivoted near the front thereof,
a friction feed roller in front of said idle roller for receiving the towel thereover, a pinch roller frame removably mounted over the feed roller and having a top portion and side portions to guide the toweling over the feed roller, a pinch roller resiliently supported in the pinch roller frame and pressed toward the feed. roller to retain the towel taut between the idle .roller and the feed roller and under which the toweling is adapted to pass from the idle roller, against the feed roller and over the latter to depend at the front of the cabinet and form a loop therebeneath and .then to extend upwardly through the pa'ssage, an upper friction winding roller and a soiled towel roller resiliently supported against the winding roller to wind the soiled towel thereon. g

A towel cabinet adapted to be mounted on a vertical support including a frame having sides mounted on the vertical support, a cabinet thereover having a bottom opening, a back plate forming a partition in spaced relation to the vertical support at the back of the cabinet and having a forwardly extending bottom portion pivoted intermediately to the sides of the frame,
upper and lower rods across the frame in rear of the partition and against and over which the "towel passes, the top of the back plate being extended upwardly and forwardly in front of and over the upper rod in spaced relation thereto to receive the toweling between the rod andportion of the back plate extending over the rod, towel feeding means at the front and lower portion of the frame, means to support a clean towel at the lower portion of the frame in conjunction with the back plate and bottom portion thereof, said towel passing up in back of the partition, winding means at the top and backportion .of the frame and cabinet and means actuating the winding means and pressed against the latter with the towel therebetween for winding the toweling as used.
14.,In a towel cabinet, a cabinet having a soiled towel roll having trunnions, a friction roller adjacent said roll, side members in the cabinet, inclined housing supported in the cabinet on the side members thereof, said side members having slots, movable open top bearings having portions in the slots and movable within the housings, said bearings supporting the trunnions of the soiled towel roll, said bearing por-' tions being projections movable in the housings,
' and springs in the housings connected to the side members and to the projections therebeneath and supporting the bearings to press the' soiled towel roll against the adjacent friction roller.
15. A towel cabinet adapted to be mounted on a vertical support including a frame having sides mounted on the vertical support, a cabinet having a bottom opening, a back plate forming a partition in spaced relation to'the vertical support and having a forwardly extendingbottom portion pivoted intermediately to the sides of the frame, upper and lower rods in rear of the partition across the frame,'the top of the back plate back plate, said towel passing up in back of the partition, winding means at the top and back portion of the frame, and means actuating the winding means for winding the toweling as used.
