This invention relates to a uid dispensing apparatus and more particularly to a dispensing line through' which iiuid is adapted toflow by gravity and wherein the flow of the fluid through the line is under control of a valve automatically operable to cause stopping' of dispensing when an exact unit quantity of fluid has been dispensed.
Another object of this invention resides in providing a'coin controlled valve operating mechanism which is constructed and arranged to start the dispensing operation and thereafter to cause the automatic stopping of dispensing when an exact unit quantity of fluid has been dispensed.-
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a fluid dispensing apparatus in combination with a cup vending apparatus, wherein instrumentalities are provided for resetting the valve operating mechanism of -the fluid dispensing line to locked condition prior to the initiation of a subsequent dispensing operation.
Another object of this invention is to provide a fluid dispensing apparatus especially suited to use with a device for vending a plurality of differently branded fluid products in combination with a cup vending apparatus.
Yet another object of this invention resides in the'provision of a novel type of coin controlled locking mechanism, per se, in which the coin, after deposit in the usual coin receiving slot, may be intercepted and returned to the operator under certain conditions.
Yet another object of this invention resides in the pro on of a novel type of locking mechanism wherein operation of a selected uid dispensing unit in a battery or plurality of such units will automatically prevent operation of any other unit of the battery.
With the above and other objects in view, as will be apparent, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

For the purpose of illustrating the features of I this invention, the apparatus thereof is disclosed in the drawings as including a plurality of selectively operable units for the dispensing' and vending of various commercially known and branded fluid products in combination with a coin operated cup vending unit. As will appear hereinafter. locking mechanism adapted to prevent operation of the liquid dispensing mechanism is controlled by the operating mechanism of the cup dispensing unit, and under such control, the locking mechanism will permit operation of a selected liquid dispensing unit while simultaneously keeping the other liquid dispensing units in locked condition. Each liquid dispensing unit is identcal in structure and operation with the other units and it will therefore sulce, in the following description thereof, to consider unit. Obviously, the number of such fluid dispensing units may be greater or less and of modied construction relative to those shown and described herein, without departing from the principles of this invention.
The apparatus of this invention may be conveniently assembled on an upright panel or base plate ill secured to and enclosed by a casing or cabinet l2 of any desired design or character. As shown, the cabinet l2 has a front wall hinged as at i4 to a iixed support or pedestal i6, so as to permit the wall and the plate l0, with its apparatus, to be tipped forwardly and downwardly (as per. dotted line showing of Fig. 2) for the purposeof providing easy access to the parts of the apparatus. The cabinet front wall is, of course. normally secured and locked in closed upright position as shown in full lines of Fig. 2.
The cup dispensing unit has been illustrated as applied to a generally conventional type of individual paper cup vending or dispensing unit, which includes an upstanding holder i5 providonly a single 'ing a housing for a plurality of nested paper cups dischargeable through a mouth |5 of the holder, and an operating lever which is maintained in normally inoperative position (i. e., toward the left as viewed in Fig. 8) by a retrieving spring (not shown) and operative through suitable mechanism to successively select and discharge an individual cup. The holder |5 and its associated parts, are preferably supported on a bracket I8 fastened as at I8 on the, rear face of the frame I0.
A rotatable shaft 20. having bearing support in the frame I0 and a supplemental mounting plate 2 l, is adapted to protrude forwardly through a suitable opening in the front wall of the cabinet |2 for the reception of a handle 22. To the portion of the shaft 20 intermediate the rear face of the frame |0 and the mounting plate 2| is keyed a coin'conveyor disk 23 which is detailed in Figs. 8, 9 and 410. The periphery of the disk 23 is provided with a coin chute or groove 24 within which a coin 25 may be sustained in upright position, and a relatively shallow locking recess or groove 26. Shoulders 2l land 28 at each end of the groove 26 coact with a clasp or locking pin 28 to limit rotation of the disk 23 and the shaft 20. The pin 28 is carried by a locking link 30, pivoted as at 3| on the mounting plate 2|, which link is normally urged into position by a spring 32 to assume a position to dispose the pin 29 in operative relation-to the groove 26.
As shown in Fig. 10, the coin chute 24 is thus` arranged immediately below and in vertical alignment with the outlet 33 of a conventional coin receiving and electing mechanism rigidly carried on the frame I0. Accordingly, the chute 24 acts 'as a stop for a coin discharged from said coin outlet 33, and is adapted to hold the coin 25 a ratchet section 38 for cooperation with a pawl 40 pivoted at 4|ll on an ear 4| projecting laterally from one corner of the mounting plate 2|.
A spring 42, as will be seen from Figs. 8 and 9. is adapted to maintain the pawl 40 in a direction to let the ratchet section 38 slide past the pawl 40 in either direction of rotation of the disk 2'3 yet willpositively cause the pawl 40 to become jambed in a tooth of the ratchet section 38 if it is attempted to reverse the direction ofmove-l ment of the ratchet section intermediate the illustrated as applied to a liquid receptacle or bottle 60 adapted to house a predetermined bulk quantity of the uid to be dispensed. The'bottle 50 is supported in inverted position, as shown in the drawings, on a bracket 5| suitably attached to a second bracket 'arm 52 secured by screws 53 or the like to the frame I0 as shown in Fig. 11. 'I'he bracket 5| includes an upright cup member or valve block 54 into which the neck and mouth of the'bottle 58 may be seated, there being a gasket 55 of rubber or the like interposed between directly above the shaft 20, with a portion-'of the coin protruding beyond the shoulder 21 of the groove-26 and beyond the periphery of the disk 23. On turning the shaft 28 and the disk 26 in counterclockwise direction (as viewed in Fig. 8) but clockwise when viewed from the front of the apparatus, the coin 25 will cam the locking pin 29 upwardly and away from the groove 38 to permit the disk 26 and coin 25 to be turned past the pin 29 and to finally tip or dump the coin 25 into a suitable depositary.
A protruding pin 34 on the face of the disk 23 engages the edges of a slot 35 formed in a cup ejector arm 36 rotatively disposed on the shaft 20. adjacent the forward face of the disk 23, so that rotation of the shaft 20 forces the arm- 36 to rotate with the disk 23. As best shown in Fig. 7, the outer extremity of the cup elector arm 36 extends substantially beyond the periphery of the disk 23 and when positioned as shown in Figs. 'I and 8, is adapted to engage the operative lever I1 associated with the cup holder |5. Accordingly, as the cup ejector arm 36 is moved counterclockwise (as viewed in Fig. 8) to overcome the tension of the retrieving spring of the cup dispenser unit, the operating lever I1 is pushed to the left. When the lever I1 arrives at the end of its throw and the cup dispensing operation has been eected to select and discharge an individual cup in Ythe conventional manner therebelow, the retriever spring will restore the lever |'I toits normal position. acting on the arm 36 to rotate the disk 23 to cause the locking pin 29 to enter the groove 26 and again obstruct turning of the shaft 20 as explained above, until another coin is deposited in the coin chute. The
periphery of the disk 23 is provided further with 'I5 the shoulder of the bottle and the cup 54 to furnish a cushion as well as a tight seal therebetween. The contents of the bottle. 50 are discharged through a pipe 56 which in turn .discharges into a cup (such as the cup obtained-from the cup dispensing unit) which may conveniently be disposed in a position below the outlet of the pipe 56.
An air supply pipe 51, communicating with an opening on the outside of the cup or valve block 54 and extending upwardly within the bottle 50 above the normal maximum level of the liquid therein, servesas a suitable air vent for proper discharge of the bottle contents.
In order to provide a control of the fluid passing through the dispensing line, I provide a control valve, which in the present instance, I preferably place in the dispensing line immediately at the outlet of the cup 54. 'Ihis valve comprises a tapered plunger 58 mounted for sliding movement in a lateral port intersecting the vertical port in the dispensing line, which plunger 56 is adapted to move into and out of fluid obstructing relation to shut of! and open the fluid discharge.
i The projecting end of the plunger 58 is provided with a forked stem 68 between the inner sides of which a downwardly projecting arm 60 of a ,frocking lever or bell crank may swing in a plane aligned with the axis of the plunger 56.- The crank or lever is pivoted as at 6| on an upright ear 62 formed on the bracket 5|. Clockwise rotation of the lever 60 causes the end thereof to engage a stop pin 63 at the outer end of the plunger stem 58, thus forcing the plunger 56 outwardly inposition to clear the liquid port. Reverse movement of the lever 66, of course, permits the plunger 58 to return to port closing relation or position in the dispensing line. A spring 64 connected to a stop lug 66 on an extending arm 61 of the lever 60 and anchored as at 66 on the bracket 5|, is adapted to urge the lever 68 in position to maintain the liquid -dispensingline closed by the plunger 56. Opening of the tline is effected by means of a timing bar 18 secured to a piston 1| coacting with a dash pot cylinder 12 secured as at 13 to the bracket arm 52. The bar 18 is provided with a horizontal foot member 15 having a cam portion 18 which is adapted to travel in a path obstructed by a pawl 11 carried at the free or projecting end of the arm 61 of the lever 60. The pawl 11 is coupled to the arm 61 by a pivot 18 and the stop lug 68, against which the lower edge of the pawl 11 may bear, as well as a spring 19 which permits yielding of the pawl 11 relative to the arm 81 as the timing bar cam 16 passes it on the down stroke, while being positive on the upstroke of said bar. to rock the lever 88 to move the plunger 58 to open the uid dispensing line. A spring 88 normally raises the timing bar 18, being coupled at one end to the foot member 15 and at the other end to a standard 8| formed integrally with the bracket 5|. The upper extremity of the timing bar 18 is provided with a locking pin A82 which coacts with a dog or locking latch 83. The dog 83 is pivoted as at 84a on the stationary support or standard 8| for vertical swinging movement to engage and disengage the locking pin 82. When the dog 83 is in engagement with the pin 82, its lower edge is in abutment with a stop 84 on the standard 8|, and a spring-85 secured to the dog 83 urges the dog to assume and retain this position.
Operation of the timing bar 18 from an upper position in unlocked relation to the dog 83 t0 a lower position in locked condition with respect to the dog 83 is controlled through a. manually operated member or impeller 98. This member 98 is secured to a slide 9| mounted for up and down sliding movement on a pair of studs 92 cooperating with the edges of slots 93 provided on said slide. The slide 9| is furnished with a handle 94 which is accessible on the outside of the cabinet I2 and the shank of which handle passes through a slot 95 in said cabinet. A spring 96 normally raises the slide 9|, being connected at one end to the slide and anchored at the other end to a pin 91 which projects from the rear face of the frame I8. The lower edge or face of the impeller 98 is adapted to engage the upper face of the foot of the timing bar 18, and thereby acts to press the bar 18 from its raised to its lowered position. As the handle 94 is released and the slide 9| begins to rise under the influence of the spring 86, the timing bar 18 remains temporarily locked in lowered position until a bar 98 secured to the slide 9| is carried upwardly sufciently to trip the dog 83, whereupon'thedog 83 is dislodged and the timing bar 18 freed to be lifted under the force of its spring 88, whereupon the cam 19 on the timing bar positively engages and trips the pawl 11 to rock the arm 88 into position to actuate the valve to open the fluid dispensing line, Lifting of the bar 18 under the force of its spring 88 is retarded by its connection with the dash pot referred to. Thus the return of the bar 18 is slow enough to delay reclosing of the valve under varying speeds of rising movement of the slide 9|.
A suitable mechanism. such as a needle valve 14, provides means for adjusting the retarding action of the dash pot to suit the time interval during which the valve is held in open position, consistent with delivery and dispensing of a predetermined unit quantity of fluid in the dispensing line.
'I'he impeller 98 is free to operate according to the condition of a locking mechanism in turn controlled by the coin operated cup dispensing mechanism. More specifically, the locking means comprises a toe |88 normally in obstructing relation or position beneath a bevelled blade 99 on the slide 9|. where it prevents the downstroke of the impeller 98. This 190.6 iS part of a system of transversely aligned b ars |8| mounted for sliding movement in guideways |83 provided on the frame I8. As shown in Fig. 3, an endmost ba;` |8| is urged by a spring |85 toward the left whereby the endmost of the bars |8| is in positive abutment 'with a xed bar |84. In this position, the toe of the bar |8| is in abutment with the end edge of its next adjacent bar |8| and the outer end of the endmost bar l8| is substantially blocked by. the edge of an upright locking bar |81, whereby the blade 89 on the slide 9| is posltively'obstructed. The locking bar |81 is mounted for vertical movement on the front face ofthe frame I8 and is provided with slots |88 and |89 over the edges of which the heads of studs ||8 and are adapted to bear to embrace the bar |81 and furnish aguide therefor.- A spring ||2 normally raises the bar |81. A pawl ||3 is carried by the bar |81, which pawl is provided with a pivot -||4. a spring ||5 and a v direction to depress the bar |81. When'the cam ||8 is rockedto `complete a stroke effective to cause operation of the cup dispensing unit, it is returned to engage the pawl ||3 thus causing the bar |81 to be depressed as shown in' Fig. 4. The bar |81 is locked in this position by means of a dog |28 pivoted asat |2|- on the bar |81 adapted to become engaged under a locking pin |22 under the inuence of a spring |23 and a stop |24. When thus locked in this position by the dog |28, a recess |25 in thel bar |81 is disposed in alignment with the end of the latch barl |8|. Under these conditions, the bars |8| may be spread toward the right to clear the path of a blade 99 on the slide 9| for operating the liquid dispensing mechanism. It will be observed from Fig. 5 that on such spreading of the bars |8| that a pin |26 on the endmost bar |8| is advanced into a position to trip the dog |28 clockwise and dispose the engaging end ofthe dog in over center relation to said locking pin |22. As a consequence, when the handle of the impeller is released and the blade on the slide 9| is freed to rise clear of the bars |8|, the bar |81 automatically rises under the force of its spring and restores the bar |81 to a position for blocking the bars 8| and the uid dispensing mechanismds thus locked in operative condition.
One edge of the slide 9| is further provided with a. ratchet toothed segment |25 which coacts with a pawl |28'I pivoted as at |21 on the frame |8. A spring 28, as will be observed from Fig. 6 for example, will permit the pawl |26 to ride across the ratchet in a continuous path in either direction of travel of the slide 9|. yet

In connection with the operation of this register bar, means are provided for raising it toward the flag arm in step by step system, each step corresponding with av predetermined unit of liquid dispensed. InV the present instance I have provided a ratchet on one edge of said register bar. which ratchetcomprises notches arranged equidistantly along the edge of the bar 4 and corresponding in selected unit measurement of volume so that the movement of the bar from one notch to the next notch represents an operation of dispensing a single unit volume of the liquid, such as tive cents worth of liquid to be dispensed. Mechanism for actuating the bar upwardly step by step comprises a pusher |4| and a locking pawi |42. The pusher is rotatively and slidably disposed upon vertically aligned pivots |43 and |44, which pivots are preferably arranged in direct alignment with the path of movement of the impeller 80. The nose of the pusher is urged upwardly and 'inwardly about said pivots toward and in engagement with said register bar ratchet |40 by means of a spring connected at its ends as at |30 and |41. The pawl |42 is pivoted at |48 for engaging a notch in the ratchet |40 upwardly of the notch engaged by the pusher |4|, a spring the coin into a suitable coin return" accessible to the patron. It will be observed that the length of the groove 26 is such that the locking pin 2li will notengage the shoulder of the groove 26 until the coin is in a position ready to be tipped into such coin-return."
In addition to being operative in a reverse or counter-clockwise direction to return a coin to the operator, as described above, the cup dispensershaft is effective during such reverse operation to actuate the usual, ejector mechanism of the coin receiving apparatus. This is accomplished by means of a link |60 having a lost motion connection as at |6| with the operating lever of saidejector mechanism so as to be ineifective during clockwise rotation of said shaft 20 but. positive to actuate the operating lever aforesaid when rotated in a counter-clockwise direction. t
Obviously the invention referred to is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described herein, and is applicable for varioususes and purposes other than as detailed. and it is therefore understood that this invention contemplates all such modifications |49 connected as at I 50 to said pawl and at its other end to the pin |39, acts to urge said pawl into engagement with said ratchet. Thus when the pusher operates to engage a subjacent notch in the ratchet, the pawl |42 holds the register bar against downward movement under the iniluence of its spring |49'. What is claimed is:
1. In'a fluid dispensing apparatus the combination of a fluid container having an inverted outlet to permit now of fluidtherefroan by gravity, a valve block in communication with the Youtlet, said valve block having a vertical port and a lateral port, the first port opening to the nuid container and the lateral port, a reciprocable valve in the lateral port, a rockable lever coacting with said valve to move said valve to port opening position. a pawl carried by said lever. a depressible member adapted to travel in a path obstructed by said4 pawl, said ,'awi being mounted to permit it to yield :eia-

3. In a fluid dispensing apparatus the combination of a :duid container having an inverted outlet to permit flow or iiuid therefrom by gravity, a valve block in communication with the outlet, said valve block having a vertical port and a lateral port. `the rst port opening to the fluid container and the lateral port, a reciprocable valve in the lateral port, a rockable lever coacting with said valve to move said valve to port opening position, a pawl carried by said lever, a depressible member adapted to travel in a path obstructed by said pawl, said pawl being mounted to permit it to yield relative to the lever on the downward stroke of said depressible member and being positive on the upstroke of said depressible member to actuate said rockable lever in a direction eiective to move said valve to port opening position, a spring for normally maintaining said depressible member in upward position, a manually operated member having spaced cams adapted to be moved from an initial position to an advanced position, means on said depressible member adapted to engage with one of said cams to move said depressible member downwardly, a dog plvotedon a stationary support adapted to hold said depressible member in depressed position, said dog being adapted to be struck and dislodged by the other oi.' said cams on said manwilly perted member during return movement of the latter from advanced to initial position to tree the depressed member for movement up'- :wardly to actuate said rockable lever, means for controlling the upstroke oi said depressible member at a constant speed. and coin controlled locking'means eiiective to prevent operation oi said manually operated member after return of said member from advanced to initial position.

In a nui'd dispensing apparatus the combination of means forming a fluid dispensing line through which liquid is adapted to now by gravity, a normally closed control valve in said dispensing line. a rockable lever coacting with said valve to move said valve to dispense duid `from said line, a pawl carried by said'lever, a depressible memf ber adapted to travel in -a path obstructed by' said pawl, said pawl being mounted to permit it to yield relative to the lever on the down stroke of said depressible member and being positive to actuate said rockable lever in a direction to effect opening of said valve on the upstroke of said depressible member. a spring for normally maintaining said depressible member in'upward,
position, a manually operated member having spaced camsadapted to be moved from an initial position to an advanced position, means on said depressible member adapted to engage with one o! said cams to move said depressible member.'

In a iiuid dispensing device, the combination of a uid dispensing line. a normally closed valve in said line, speed controlled valve opening mechanism including an impeller movable from initial position to advanced position, means combining to form an enclosure for limiting access to said valve opening mechanism, said impeller having a handle operable from the exterior of said housing, and normally locked coin releasable means for controlling operation of said impeller including slidable means biased to a position obstructing the path of said impeller, a locking .bar movable toward and away from a position obstructing the path of said slldable means and biased to a position obstructing the path of said slidable means, a pivotally mounted latch adapted to releasably lock said locking bar in a position away from a position obstructing the path of said slldable means preparatory to movement of said impeller from initial position to advanced position and return, and operable to release said locking bar for movement to a position obstructing the path of said slldable means upon return of said impeller toinitial position.
6.
