The arm I8 is moved in the opposite direction by a spring 24 connected therewith, as shown in Fig. 1. The lostmotion connection is provided between the rods have provided control mechanism in the form of a supporting plate 26 mounted in a fixed position relative to the engine I, as on a support 21 forming a part of the motor vehicle frame structure. The supporting plate 26 is elongated as shown in Figs. 4 and and has longitudinally extending guideways 28 therein slidably receiving a block 29. The block 29 is adapted to be moved lengthwise of the guideways 28- by the lever I, the lower end portion of which is bifurcated at 30 and receives in the bifurcation thereof a pin 3| attached to the block 29, whereby swinging movement of the lever I causes longitudinal sliding movement of the block 29.
A guide arm 32 is pivotally, supported at 33 on the block 29 and carries a pin 34 on the free end thereof which pin 34 is in position to ride upon a track 35 rigidly fixed to the inner side of the supporting plate 26 at one side of the block 29, as shown in Fig. 6. The pin 34 is held in a riding position on the track 35 by aspring 36 connected with the guide arm 32. The track 35 has a main inclined portion designated 35a in.
Figs. '7 and 8, from the outer end of which depends an oppositely inclined portion 35b termimating in an outer end portion 350 adapted to receive and guide the pin 34, as hereinafter described. Spaced above the portion 350 of the track is a guide stop 31 arranged substantially the track portion 35a. In this position, the guide pin 34 is retained in a pocket 46 between the end of the switch arm 38 "and the guide stop 31 directly over an elongated abutment 41 fixed to the inner side of the supporting plate 26.
In the operation .of this control, the governor -|2 is set initially by the adjusting means I5 for a predetermined maximum speed of operation of the engine, and the collar is adjusted also on the link 6, so as to provide for sufficient movement of the arm 5 to open the throttle valve 4 to an extent slightly in excess of the maximum -volume of opening of the throttle valve provided in the governor I2, This will permit the manual acceleration of the engine up to the governor speed, thus allowing the governor to function without interference by the manual control.
' In the operation of the accelerator pedal I0 to open the throttle valve 4, the movement of the in longitudinal alignment with theinclined portion 350. of the track, but spaced therefrom, and
supported upon the inner side of the supporting plate 26. I
Interposed between the track portion a. and
the guide stop 31 is a switch'arm 38 constructed with a pointed end arranged substantially at the V juncture between the track portions 35a and 35b,
and with an upper surface inclined therefrom terminating in an end lip 39 overlapping the lower end of the guide stop'31, and spaced therefrom a distance at least as great as the diameter 1 of the guide pin 34 for passage of said pin therebetween and between the end of the guide stop 3'! and the switch arm 38. Said switch arm 38 is supported on a shaft 40, journaled in the supporting plate 26 and having a bell crank lever 4| fixed on the outer end thereof. One end of the bellcrank lever 4| has a spring 42 connected therewith, while the opposite end thereof underlies one arm of a bell crank lever 43 pivoted at 44 to a side of the supporting plate 26, while the other arm of said bell crank lever 43 is pivotally attached to a connecting rod 45, extending therefrom to the brake actuating mechanism of the vehicle. The connection is such that the application of the brakes to set positions will move the connecting od 45 in the'direction indicated by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 4, tripping the bell crank lever 4| and swinging-the switch arm 38 from the position shown in Figs. 5 and 7 tothe position shown in Fig. 8. This will allow the guide pin 34 to move backward from a position at one end of the switch arm 38 directly to lever I causes corresponding swinging movement of thebifurcated portion 30 thereof, and through the pin 3| slides the block 29along the guideways 28 to move the guide arm 32 lengthwise of the supporting plate 26. During this movement, the guide pin 34 rides initially on the track portion 35a, as indicated in Fig. 7. The continued movement of the lever 'I by the accelerator pedal causes the guide arm 32 to move the guide pin 34 beyond the upper end of the track portion 35a, where it will ride over the upper surface of the switch arm 38 and pass over the endlip 39, dropping ontothe guide stop 31 under the influence of the spring 36, thence into the pocket 46 due to the presenceof the lug 41. This locks the accelerator'and throttle in advanced open position-maintaining this condition without the necessity for the operator .to hold the accelerator pedal 1..
However, if. the operator desires an increased his 6 foot on .speed of 'operation of the engine, it is necessary merely to depress the footpedal I0 further, which -moves the guide pin 34 out of the pocket 46, as
indicated bythe arrowsin Fig. 7, where it drops onto the track portion35c and continues thereon to the extent necessary according to the depression of the foot pedal. Then when the foot pedal is released, the pin 34'follows back along the track portions 350, 35band under thepoint of the switch arm 38, onto the track portion 350. to its initial position.
In the event that itbecomes necessary to apply the brakes instantaneously, when the guide pin 34 is held in the pocket 46, without sufficient time first to release the guide pin from said pocket by furtherdepression of the accelerator pedal I0, provision is made for'opening the pocket 46 automatically, as indicated in Fig. 8. This is accomplished by the connection 45 to the brake rigging or brake operator, through which the movement thereof in applying the brakes swings the bell crank lever 43 to trip the bell crank lever 4| (Fig.4), andthus rotate 'theshaft 40, carrying the switch arm 38, in the direction indicated bythe arrow in Fig. 8, which allows the guide pin 34 to move from the pocket 46 direct]; along the 'upper surface of the lug 41 to the upper end of the track portion'35a, thence to its :iFnitial position as indicated-by the arrows in The adjustable collar 25 is set on the link 6 in such position. that the operator may, at will, advance the accelerator to such an extent asto lock out the governor I2 by extended movement of the link 6 until the collar 25 engages the sleeve bracket 2| and moves the latter forward therei fastener engine under thecontrol of the throttle L Then the when'the accelerator pedal I is released,'the
spring 24 returns the arm I8 to its initial position releasing the governor I2 and allowing it to remain in its operative position to control the maximum operating speedof the engine.
This throttle control is particularly desirable for motor vehicles where the drivers desire to travel at a constant predetermined speed, and
at the same time find it necessary to have the control mechanism sufiiciently flexibleto provide for increased speed if the demand arises or to decrease the speed instantaneously in an emer-' gency.
