STYLOGRAPHIC FOUNTAIN-PEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,222, dated January 4, 1881;
Application filed February 12, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. HAWKES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stylographic Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents asectional side elevation of my improved stylographic fountain-pen, and Figs. 2 and?) are respectively an interior and an exterior view of the coupling connecting the handle and the needle-containing tube on an enlarged scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to improvements in stylographic fountain-pens; and it consists essentially of a sectional handle the upper section of which contains the ink-reservoir, the lower section containing the writing-spindle and the'devices for holding the same, said sections being connected by a removable tubular coupling. The needle is made in one piece with its cushioning-spring, the latter being retained on a center-post of the coupling, within the needle-tube, and the ink supplied to the needle by small orifices arranged around the base of and through the post.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a hollow sectional handle or case, in the lower part of which the ink fountain or reservoir is contained, while in the upper part a piston and piston-rod are arranged for pumping the ink into the reservoir. The piston arrangement has heretofore been patented jointly to me and Hermann Madeheim by Letters Patent dated January 20, 1880, and numbered 223,644.
To the handle A is connected, by a tubular coupling, B, the needle-containing tube 0, which is provided with a platinum or iridium point, D. The tubularcoupling B is screwed into the lower end of the handle and the tube 0 screwed onto the opposite end of the coupling, the tube being adjustable thereon.
At the interior of the tube 0 is placed the needle E, which is made in one piece with its spiral cushioning-spring E, the latter being placed around a center-post, B of the coupling written on.
The ink is supplied from the reservoir in the handle through discharge-orifices a in the end of the coupling, the orifices being arranged around the base of the center-post B. The ink passes then along the cushioning-spring and needle to the pointwhere the vibration of the needle in writing keeps up a regular flow.
The cushioning-spring is held in position on the end of the coupling as the end of the spring enters into one of the ink-supply holes.
The needleis prevented from falling out of the tube 0 by an interior construction or shoulder, 12, of the needle-containing tube.
The cheap, simple, and durable construction of the fountain-pen, together with the facility of cleaning the parts and filling the reservoir on removing the needle-containing tube, form the main features of my invention.
When the fountain-pen is to be carried in the pocket the needle-point is protected by a cap which is securely fitted to the end of the needle-tube.
Havingtthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- 1. In a stylographic fountain-pen, the combination of the handle containing the ink fountain or reservoir with a needle holding and supporting center-post attached to and supported by the handle, substantially as set forth.
2. In a stylographic fountain-pen, the combination, with a sectional handle, of the needle holding and supporting center-post inserted and secured to the lower section of the handle, substantially as specified.
3. In a stylographic fountain-pen, the combination of an adjustable needle-holder with a removable tubular coupling, serving to connect the spindle-holder, point-section, and main reservoir together, substantially as described.
4:.
