Description

(No Model.) h W'. H. SPRAGUE.
Pen Holder.
' No. 235,656. Paten ted'Dec. 21 ,1880.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ERS. FHOTO-LITHOGflAPHER, WASHINGTON D c. I
Nrrnn WILLIAM H. SPRAGUE, or NORWALK, OHIO.
PEN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,656, dated December 21, 1880.
Application filed August 1'7, 1880.
i To all whom it may concern enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My inventionrelates to multiple pen-holders; and it consists in the following parts and combination of parts, as hereinafter specified.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my invention as constructed for operating three pens. Fig. 2illustrates the same withall but one lateral pen removed. Fig. 3 is an end view of my pen-holder, showing one of the lateral penholders in position. Fig. 4is a detached view, showing .one of the lateral pen-holders as removed from itsstem. Fig. 5 is a plan view, showing a supplemental holder for carrying two pens, such as is illustrated as applied in Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a view of a pen-holder constructed according to my invention. Fig. 7 is an end view of the pen-holder shown in Fig. 6. Fig.8 is an end view, showing the manner of forming a supplemental holder for carrying two lateral pens, as indicated in Fig. 1.
A is the holder, made of wood, guttapercha, celluloid, or any suitable material. Its lower end is provided with an enlarged portion, A, which tapers downward, substantially in the manner shown in the drawings. The lower end of the portion A has an annular groove, 13, formed within it, substantially as indicated in the drawings, into which groove fits a central pen, B. There are also formed across the lower end of the part A two straight grooves, C, out at right angles to each other, and intersecting each other at the longitudinal axis of the penholder A. The grooves O are made to extend well back into the handle-section A, as shown, and are designed for the reception of the supplemental pen-holders O. The supplemental pen-holders C may be constructed to carry either one or two lateral pens, the one carrying a single pen being illustrated in (No model.)
Figs. 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings, and the double supplemental holders being illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5. These supplementalholders for carrying the lateral pens C are formed, preferably, of metal, and bent (for carrying a single pen) into the form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings. .When designed for carrying two lateral pens the supplemental holders 0 can be constructed to extend upon each side of the main pen-holder A, as illus trated in Figs. 1 and S of the drawings.
I prefer to form a pen-holder with its stem A enlarged, and tapering section A, annular slot B, and intersecting slots 0 all from a single piece of wood by turning and sawing. However, I do not limit myself, narrowly, to to this method of construction, as a pen-holder constructed according to my invention may be formed of several parts, of various kinds of metalsuch, for instance, as would not be liable to corrosion.
The advantages accompanying my construction of pen-holder are, first, the ability to use either one, two, or three pens at once, which enables a skillful penman to produce many varieties of ornamental work impossible of attainment by any other method. Additional beauty may be imparted to the work produced by dipping the pens in varied colored inks, such as black, red, and blue, respectively. The pens O B may be adjusted in their holders so that their points approach more or less closely, th'us adding variety, according to fancy. Another advantage that I accomplish is that the annular and intersecting slots impart elasticity to the pen-holder.
What I claim is- 1. The combination, with a pen-holder provided with intersecting grooves O, of a supplemental holder, O, adapted to be removably secured within said grooves, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a pen-holder constructed with an annular groove, B, and intersecting grooves G, of a supplemental holder, 0, constructed and adapted to be removably secured within said grooves, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a pen-holder provided with intersecting grooves C, of a sup- In testimony whereof I have signed my piemental holder formed of sheet metal bent name to this specification in the presence of upon itself, one end thereof being curved and two subscribing witnesses.
