1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in air conditioning apparatus and more particularly to an apparatus for cooling and purifying airl An important object of the present invention is `to :provide an apparatus wherein air can be cooled in high temperature weather, quickly, efliciently and at a very low cost.
Another important object of the invention is to eprovide an air conditioning. apparatus of the character stated which is of simple construction and of low cost to manufacture, vthe same having its parts so arranged as to be readily acthe ap- Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view on they line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary elevational view showing the spider for the drum.
Figure 7 is a longitudinal sectional view through the drum.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the numeral 5 denotes a' cabinet having a hinged top 6 and below this top is a horizontal partition 'I for supporting ice 8 or other cooling media. The partition 1 has openings 9 therein through which cold water from the ice 8 can drip onto a cylinder unit generally referred to by numeral I 0 and which operates in a pan II containing a certain amount of lime which mixes with Water I 2, which may be an initial amount -of water `placed there or that from drippings from the drum unit I0 and both of these cylinders have perforations I8. A plate I 9 closes one end of the drum unit III while a ring 20 closes the remaining end of the short outer cylinder II, thus defining a chamber in which loose shavings, excelsior or like material denoted by 'numeral 2| is rplaced to hold moisture- A packing collar 22 is provided on the .partition I4 where the elongated cylinder I6 passes through the partition I4. At this end of the drum unit I 0, the cylinder I6 has a spider 23 therein through which a shaft 24 is disposed, this shaft extending through the other end of the drum and being supported by a bearing 25.
'I'he forward end of the shaft 24 has a gear 26 meshing with a gear 21 on a lower countershaft 28 which is equipped with a pinion 29 meshing with a pinion 30 on a vertical shaft 3l which is geared to the armature shaft of an electric motor L32 held by brackets 33 in back of an opening 34 in the front wall of the cabinet 5. This opening 34 has grill bars 35 therein and behind the bars 35 is a fan 36 carried by the armature shaft of the motor 32.'
One side Wall of the cabinet 5 has an opening It can now beseen, that with the motor 32 I operating, the drum unit IIJ is slowly turned as it dips in the lime content of the pan I I. Air is sucked through the dnun unit I0 and through the opening 31 and in passing through the drum unit IIJ it is cooled by contact with the cold lime water and the lime in the water serves to convert carbon dioxide into calcium carbonate. The fan 36 draws this cool air from the elongated cylinder I6 and forces -the same through the opening 34 in the front wall of the cabinet.
While the foregoing speciilcation sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
what is partition dividing the cabinet below said ice containing compartment into an air intake and a discharge compartments, respectively, the horizontal partition being perforated above the air intake compartment to permit drippings from the ice in said ice containing compartment to escape into the air intake compartment, an `air inlet and an air outlet in said cabinet opening into the air intake and out of the air discharge compartment, respectively, -a liquid containing pan in the air intake compartment, a perforated drum unit journaled at one end in said transverse partition for rotation in said pan and to open into said air discharge compartment, a motor fan unit in said air discharge compart- 'ment opposite said outlet, and gearing between and said drum.
the motor of said unit JAMES N. FULCHER.
