on such a suitably patterned template to accommodate a feeler and tracing finger on the carrier in order to translate the movement def sired to the carrier and then to the tool on said carrier.
In carrying out the principles of the present invention I have added an improvement on the base for coaction with a feeler or tracing finger on the carrier unit, this for purposes of gauging and translating different radii to the work to be acted on by the tool.
The principal improvements reside in the particular construction of the so-called carrier unit, this being provided with a shiftable or adjustable adapter holder for the tracing finger, and there being feeding means on said unit for actuating and regulating the holder.
It is believed too, that novelty may reside in the external and cross-sectional configuration of the carrier unit, this being ribbed on diametrically opposite sides and substantially semi-circular in cross sectional form to facilitate grasping with the hands and maneuvering the same on the ribbed base or platen.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings.

The base or platen, which is of heavy durable steel or equivalent material, is of general rectangular form and is denoted by the numeral 1.

The numeral l5 (see Figure 3) comprises a cone-like template which is an added accessory and which is fastened on the base and held in position by a clamping screw or the like l6. Its purpose is for translating predetermined radius measurements from the base to the work (not shown) as somewhat indicated in Figure 3.
The improved hand-manipulated shiftable carrier unit 9 is vertically elongated and is a massive body of steel or the like and is preferably substantially semi-cylindrical in cross-sectional form. Diametrically opposed surfaces or faces are formed with grooves defining perpendicular ribs ll, these to facilitate grasping the device with the fingers and to avoid slippage if the hands are greasy or sweaty. The rear perpendicular surface of this block-like carrier is substantially fiat across as at l8 and on one side is a substantially L- shaped channel or groove l9. In the side diametrically opposite to the flat face l8, that is, the convex front portion, I provide a substantially rectangular recess 20 which constitutes a keyway and serves to accommodate the adapter block 2|. This block is shiftable up and down in the keyway and is formed with a central screw-threaded bore to accommodate the screw-threaded portion 22 of the adjusting rod 23. This rod has its lower end reduced and swivelled in a socket formed in the basal portion of the carrier unit, this as indicated at 24. The upper end of the rod is flanged as at 25 to provide a shoulder and is further provided with a knurled finger-grip or knob 26. Referring to the shiftable adapter block 2! in Figure 4, it will be noted that this is provided with an extension 3| socketed to accommodate the removable feeler and tracing finger 32, the latter being held in place by a set-screw 33.
The block 2| is provided with locking means as shown in Figure 6. This comprises a set-screw 34 threaded into a screw-threaded hole having a pointed inner end coacting with the conical or pointed inner ends of the projectible and retractible locking pins 35, these being mounted in bores at right angles to the set-screw hole. By feeding the coacting wedging points of the respec tive parts 34 and 35 together, the pins 35 are pressed against the walls of the socket 20 to lock the block 2| in position and to avoid slippage once it has been adjusted through the medium of the feed screw 22. p
In practice it is obvious that the feed screw is adjusted in the unit 9 to place the block 2| in a suitable position to coact either with the conical tracer appliance l or the template I4. Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a structural assemblage of the class described, in combination, a base, a tool carrier unit shiftably supported on the surface of the base, a conical template on said base, and a feeler finger carried by said unit and cooperable with the surface of said conical template.
2. In a structure of the. class described, in combination, a base, a hand maneuverable unit shiftably mounted on said base, a conical template on said base, a plurality of posts on said base, a second plate-like template on said base having an irregularly-shaped edge for tracing purposes, a translating and tracing feeler finger adjustably mounted on said unit and selectively engageable with either of the two templates, and a forming and dressing tool on said unit.
3. In a structure of the class described, a ribbed substantially rectangular plate-like base, a conical member supported on said base, .a plurality of posts on said base, and a plate-like template mounted on said posts parallel to and above said base.
4. A tool unit for use in an assemblage of the class described comprising a vertically elongated body of general semi-circular cylindrical form having external gripping ribs, a feeler finger, an adapter block adjustably mounted in said unit, and a cutting tool on said unit.
