METALLIC REEL-SEAT FOR FISHING-RODS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,512, dated December 14, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS H. CHUBB, residing in Post Mills, county of Orange, State of Vermont, have invented certain Improvements in Metallic Reel-Seats for Fishing-Rods, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the construction of tubular metallic reel-seats for the butts of fishing-rods; and it consists in areel-seat ofthis character formed from a single integral tube with the exception of one ring, hereinafter named, and having the reel-plate guides and the stop-ring struck up upon its outer surface, in lieu of riveting or soldering them thereto, as heretofore practiced.'- The ring to which exception is made encompasses the lower end of the tube, and has a swell impressed in it to correspond with the reel-plate fins or guides,

as hereinafter explained.

i The drawings accompanying this specification represent, in Figure 1, an isometric elevation, Fig. 2 a cross-section, and in Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of a metallic reel-seat, so called, containing my improvements, the latter containing the reel-band. Fig. 4 is a view of the independent socketed ring which secures the lower endof the reel-plate.

. In'these drawings, A represents the lower end or portion of the butt of a rod adapted to fly-fishing.

In carrying my improvement into practice I strike up from asheet of thin metal a seamless tube, B, the lower end of which is closed, as shown at a, while its upper end is open to receive the end of the butt, which is inserted within the tube, as shown in Fig. 2.

The fins or guides which inclose the reelplate (shown at b in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings) are shown at o c as arranged longitudinally of the tube B and parallel to each other, and in lieu of soldering or riveting these fins to the exterior of the tube, as has been the practice heretofore, I strike them up from the interior of the tube, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and in so doing obtain a higher degree of finish, lessenthe expense, and avoid danger of the'fins being detached from the tube.

Heretofore the butt-ferrule of rods (shown at O in the drawings) has been an independent piece secured to the end of the rod-butt, or to the end of the tube B, as the case may be, and likewise with the stop-ring it has been independent from the tube and soldered or riveted to it.

In myconstruction the butt-ferrule is part and parcel of the tube, and is struck up with it,as is also the stop-ring F, both as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

By this method of producing the butt-ferrule and stopring I obtain greater strength, higher finish, and reduced cost, as compared with the old method.

The socket or seat for the lower end of the reel-plate is shown at D in the drawings as a circular ring from a flat band of metal, having a swell or socket in one end struck up from the inside, as shown at (I, such socket serving to contain the lower end of the reelplate and confine the latter to the tube B.

The ring D encompasses and is secured to the tube B, and its socket portion at coincides with the tins c c. The clasp-ringis shown at E.

I claim.

1. Areel-seat for fishing-rod butts, composed of a seamless tube having the butt-ferrule and stop-ring and longitudinal fins integral with and struck up from it.

2. Areel-seat for fishing-rod butts, composed of a seamless tube having an integral buttferrule and stop-ring, and provided with an independent socketed band or ring encompassing the tube, and acting with the longitudinal guides of the latter to retain grasp of the reel-plate.

3. In reel-seats for fishingrod butts, composed of a seamless tube, the longitudinal fins or guides as integral with and struck up from the tube.

4. In reel-seats for fishing-rod butts, composed of a seamless tube, the butt-ferrule as integral with and struck up from the tube, and constituting the bottom of the latter.
