WITNESSES:
. UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICEQ AMMONIA-BOILER FOR ICE-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 235,441, dated December 14, 1880.
Application filed May 15, 1880.
' the following is a specification.
One of the most objectionable features of the ice-machines built upon the principle of absorption invented byOarr is the employment of large coils of pipe in the ammonia boiler, condenser, and absorber, which coils require frequent repairs, cleaning, and replacemen t, as, owing to the uneven tension to which the fibers of the iron are exposed in bending, they are liable to burst, which necessitates the removal of the coil and the substitution of a new one, which causes interruptions in the working of the machine and thereby considerable annoyance and delay.
This invention relates to such improvements in ammonia-boilers that in place of the coils straight tubes are employed and the invention consists of an ammonia-boiler the lower horizontal part of which is provided with tiers of straight horizontal tubes and with alternately-connecting end chambers, and of a vertical dome having a slotted foam-retaining disk at the lower part below the rectifyingdisks at the upper part of the dome.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l representsa vertical longitudinal section of my improved ammonia boiler for ice machines. Fig. 2is a-side elevation of the same, partly in section, on line a: m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail top view of the foam-retaining disk of the boiler-dome. a "ert-ical central section and a horizontal section on line y y, Fig. 4, of the condenser; and Figs. 6 and 7 are, respectively, a vertical central and a'horizontal section on line 2 z, 6, of the absorber, built on the same principle as the ammonia-boiler.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding par-ts.
In the drawings, A represents the ammoniaboiler of an absorption ice-machine built on the Oarr system. The boiler is constructed of two main parts-a lower horizontal part, B, and a dome, G. The main part B of the boiler is provided with straight tubes D, which are Figs. 4 and 5 are, respectively,
(No model.) Patented in Germany August 26, 1879.
arranged in regular series or groups, the tubes extending in horizontal direction from the front to the rear head.
The heads D of the boiler are double-walled, so as to form steam-chambers, which are divided by horizontal partitions in such a manner that steam passes successively through the different horizontal tiers or groups of tubes, the partitions being made to alternate, so that the steam passes first through one series of tubes to the rear chamber, then through the next series of tubes to the front chamber, and so on until it leaves the boiler in a condensed state at the lower part.
By removing the heads D any tube which may be damaged by use may be readily replaced by a new one without the trouble and expense connected with the replacing of the coils which were heretofore employed in ammonia-boilers.
The ammonia -boiler is preferably set into brick-work, the dome O being provided in its lower part with an interior disk, E, which is provided with a ring-shaped slot, 0, near its circumference, as shown in Fig. 3. This disk serves for the purpose of retaining the foam which is produced in the boiling of the ammonia-water.
The ammonia vapors pass through the slots to the upper part of the dome, while the foam, which may be carried up by the vapors above the disk, is forced down into the lower part of the boiler by the cool ammonia-water, which is pumped back into the boiler from the absorber. The ammonia vapors pass through a rectifier, F, in the upper part of the dome, which rectifier is composed of a series of horizontal disks, f, which are alternately provided with central openings and circumferential slots. The vapors are thereby compelled to pass successively through and around the disks, and are entirely cleared of any water carried along by the same, so that they pass off in a dry state through a pipe at the top part of the dome to the condenser. The same principle of employing straight tubes is also applied to the condenser G and absorber H, which has the advantage that any leaking tube may be readily replaced by removing the heads with little expense and hardly any delay. In the congangsta 1 o Paten t- In a boiler or generator for ice-machines, the combination of a lower horizontal part, 1), provided with tiers of horizontal tubes and double heads, with alternating partitions between the tiers of tubes, with a vertical dome, 0, having :5 a slotted foam-retaining disk between the lower part of the dome and the rectifying-disks at the upper part of the dome, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 27th day of March,
OSCAR KROPFF.
