Description

Model) I E. H. ASHCROFT.
LocomOti'vTBoiler.
No.235,400. I Pa ten ted Dec 14,1880.
ooooo ILPETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITE STATES PATENT ()FFICE- EDWARD H. ASHCROFT, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOCOMOTlVE-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,400, dated December 14, 1880,
Application filed March 31, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD H. ASHCROFT, of Lynn, county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locomotive-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section; Figs. 2 and 3, transverse vertical sections, respectively onthe lines 3 y and ac x,- of a boiler embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to certain improvements in locomotive-boilers for which Letters Patent of the United States were granted to me, as assignee, October 1, 1878, and numbered 208,546, in which an auxiliary steam and water dome is arranged in conjunction with the main boiler and communicatingtherewith by a series of necks, said auxiliary dome and necks hein g covered with a hood or casin g, forming an interior surrounding space, within which the productsof combustion are directed and circulated before escaping through the uptake-passage.
The improvements consist in providing an additional outlet for the products of combustion, located at or near the opposite or rear end of the hood or casing, and each outlet fitted with dampers to be opened or closed alternately, whereby either outlet may be utilized for the escape of thegases. The additional outlet at the rear end of the hood is intended to be utilized when the fires are started and during the time employed in getting up steam preparatory to a trip. The forward or direct outlet being closed the products of combustion are returned through the space surrounding the auxiliary dome. The draft of the boiler when in this stationary position is materially augmented, and the products of combustion are drawn in contact with the increased heatingsurface presented by the auxiliary dome and necks, which necessarily induces a more rapid .the main portion of the boiler, B the auxiliary steam and water dome, and O the hood or casin g.
D is the forward uptake, located in the usual Way, and E the additional uptake, arranged at the rear or opposite end of the hood 0.
It a are dampers or cut-offs arranged within the uptake-passages, and b the connecting-rod for operating the same. As represented, the dampers are set and connected with the rod 1) at about right angles with each other, so that a longitudinal movement of the rod will open one and close the other, it being the intention to utilize but one of the uptake-passages at the same time, although both might be used if found advantageous, particularly when the engine is in motion, the change in relative position of the dampers, in this instance, being readily'efi'ected by adjusting their attachment to the operating connecting-rod to secure such result.
0 0 represent hand-holes and plates, which may be located near the base of the hood or casing, or wherever it may he found convenient to clear the same of dirt or ashes or to gain access to its interior.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a locomotive-boiler substantially such as described, two or more independent uptakepassages for the escaping products of combustion, located at various parts of the hood or casing, with suitable devices for opening or closing the respective passages and utilizing either or both, as set forth.
EDWARD H. ASHCROFT.
