In the carrying out of the invention herein,

sheet fiber board, box board, or .paper board stock may provide major side I, secondary side 2, and still minor side 3 (Fig. 1), which is assembled by stitching 4 to provide side walls 5 (Figs.v 2, 4) for a container. Scoring 6, 1, determine a fold region for the knock-down tubular blank to be in flat condition for stacking and shipping. Scoring 8 is at the base of major flaps 9 as endless annular `series for the end closureportion of the container, which closure is to be effective after the container is charged or lled. Score I Il; remote from the score 8, is
-slightly spaced .from endless annular series of minor flaps II. The anchoring means or stitching or stapling 4 brings the terminus of the minor inner side 3 to overlap the terminus of the larger side 2. This preserves the symmetry for the iiaps Il and locates at the region of the stitching 4, but therebeyond, fractional flap II (Fig. 1) which has its tapered side II" extend from the tip of the flap II to the scoring I0. This means that this incline at the terminus of the section 3 is of greater extent than the sides of V-cuts I5 which sepa-rate Ithe flaps II but which v-cuts donot extend clear to the scoring I0. Accordingly, there is at the assembly or stapling 4 a double thickness for at least a fraction of the tab or flap, but the symmetry of the tabs or iiaps is continuous. In the carrying out of the invention herein, this knock-down or at tubular structure (Fig. 2) may be spread or 'opened out and the side 'Walls 5 (Fig. 4) then thrust toward base I2 having shallow inwardly tapered portion I3. The scoring I0, with the clearance I4 as to the V-cuts I5 between the lflaps II, controls the flaps II against outward thrusting so that in this jamming there is an inward drawing to have these flaps radiate inward on the base I2. The sides of the V-.cuts I5 and the slant o f the side II" are at an acute angle to the direction of the scoring I Il, while the V-cuts I5 do not extend clear to the scoring ID but are short therefrom. Partition I6 may then be dropped into this region between the side walls 5.
For facility in locating this partition, tool is provided having grip Vor handle I1 and stem I8 (Fig. `6) with loose guide I9 thereon having diametrical arms20 to pivot connections 2l with semi-circular sections 22 having intermediate hinge 23. This tool as thrust down centrally between the side walls 5 against the partition I6 so flattens out this partition I6 that its rim portion registers with the scoring I0 adjacent the aps Il.
Helpful in carrying out this invention is machine having upright frame portion 24 (Fig. 9) from base 25. This upright portion 24 has overhanging arm 26, terminally of which is located stitcher 21, above which is located supply reel 28 for wire 29, say of at stock adapted to be cut into lengths and terminally bent over as a two-pointed tack in staple-like type of stitch.
- Motor 30 has transmission 3| to drive the stitcher and additionally' drive cam 32. This cam 32 thereby synchronizes with the stitcher 21 in operation of lever 33 having adjustable fulcrum 34 in arm 35 from the upright frame portion 24.
Tension helical spring 26 having adjustment 21 as to ithe frame 24 engages the lever 22 to hold such in position as to the cam 22. 'I'his lever 32 has at its lower arm ll slot 39 connected to link 4l.. 'Ihis link 40 has connection to arm 4I (Fig. 1l) pivoted on shaft 42. Carried by this arm 4| is pin 43 pivotally mounting pawl 44, normally thrown by spring 45 into mesh with ratchet 45 fixed on the shaft 42 (Fig. 9).
On the base 25 is bearing 41 mounting column 4B having thereon lower deck or holder 49 and upper deck or holder table 50. This cam 32 through this lever and linkage mechanism is an intermittent grip device to provide step by step rotation of the shaft 42 having bearing in the table portions 49, 50. Table portion 5U has spaced therefrom parallel portion 5I. In the clearance region 52 between the portions 50, 5I, is located friction roller 53 fast on the shaft 42.
The location ofthe table portion 49 is at such spacing from the table portion 50 that as the tubular section 5 has its endclosing partition I5 rest on the table 50 with the tube portion 5 downward therefrom, the flaps 9 as straight therefrom abut this table 49. `From the overhanging arm 25 there is depending bracket 54 (Fig. 10) which has pivot bearing 55 mounting lever -55 having roller 51, normally held against the position of the roller 53, because arm 58 fixed with the arm 55 of this angle lever is connected to tension spring 59 to an extension 55 from the bracket 54. Handle 5| may serve to shift this roller 51 for. increased spacing .as to the roller 53 and thereby clear oi' the stock or work as on the holder.
In placing this stock or lwork onthe holder, the upper tables 50, 5l, are pulled away from the stitcher 21 and thereby rocked on the pivot 41. In this cleared position for placing the work Yon the tables. the tables may then be rocked back so that abutment 92 strikes adjustable stop 53 at the desired upright position to bring anvil 54 in the table 50 at appropriate register positon as to the stitcher working tool 65. The table and work are normally held in this registry position as -to the anvil and stitcher as rocked to have the abutment'52 against the stop 53. This normal holding is effected by tension spring 56 between the upright frame 24 and the column 48. 'I'he operator, by depressing treadle 61, operates control mechanism so that the motor 30 is effective through the transmission 3| to drive the stitcher 21 for its tool -55 to impale toward the anvil 54 in thrusting a staple through the work to be clinched by the anvil 64. As such operation is completed and the tool 55 is withdrawn. the cam 32 is effective in this intermission to operate the intermittent grip device to shift the work for a. step of progress or rotation due to the friction action of the roller 53 upon the stock as held 30 thereagainst by the roller 51. The tables do not rotatebut have their only position of change that of rocking. 'I'he work is given this step by step for the desired advance, whether the stapling be to bridge between the flaps I I, or medially of the ilaps, or in both places.
As the operator notes the stitching has been completed for the circuit, the treadle 51 is released and the machine stopped so that the work may be pulled away from position beneath the stitcher. end of the carton is thus. as a unit, slipped off the inclined set of tables 49, 55, as tilted away from the stitcher 21. A11 is now in readiness for slip- The stitch-anchored partition at the l0 range of operation herein. as well as a range for taking care of different dimension containers. Such range as to length is eil'ected by locating different spacing between the upper table portion 50 and the holder table portion 49. The matter of transverse dimension which could mean variation in the diameter is readily taken into account by the friction wheel 53 as cooperating with roller 51 holding the container in position against relatively controlled shifting as to the table 50 in the vicinity of the anvil 54. In practice, there may be purpose in locating staples 98 in the joints between the naps Il to bridge therebetween (Fig. l2) or even centrally of the flaps. This location is taken into account by varying the throw of the intermittent grip device through adjustment 59 in the link 40.
With the carton in position as to its tubular portion about the table 50 and the end or partition l5 against the table 50, the aps, whether so previously jammed or directed by guide 10 (Fig.
9), are in proximity to this end l5 as the respective naps are fed into position as to the stitcher 21.
'What is claimed and it is desired to secure by 35 United States Letters Patent is:
1. A machine frame, an overhanging arm therefrom, a stitcher terminally of the arm, a work holder table carried by and movable relatively'to the frame and including an anvil to 40 oppose the stitcher, a drive on the frame for the stitcher, a transmission connection from the drive synchronized to advance the work on the table at release positions of the stitcher as to work on the table.
2. A machine frame, an overhanging arm from and then be swung back to bring the work into transmission connection from the drive synchronized with the stitcher to shift work on the table as to the stitcher at release position of thc stitcher as to said work.
3. For a tubular carton having an endless series of flaps prdvided with scoring on the inner side adjacent the naps and a partition seated at the scoring; a holder providing an anvil to abut the partition adjacent the flaps, stitching means opposing the anvil for anchoring the flaps to the seated partition, a drive for the stitching means having connection for` effecting relative progress 05 between the holder and stitcher, and release means -for clearing the holder from the stitcher for ready removal of the stitched carton and its replacement by a carton to be stitched.
4. For av tubular carton having an endless series 7o of naps provided with scoring on the inner side adjacent the flaps and a partition seated at the scoring; a holder providing an anvil to abut the partition adjacent the flaps, stitching means opposing the anvil for anchoring the flaps to the ping a succeeding set-up of carton with the parseated partition. a drive for the stithing means having synchronized connection for shifting the holder at release position of the stitching means as to the carton, and a ltilting device for the holder to clear the holder from the stitcher for ready removal of the stitched carton and its replacement by a carton to be stitched.
5. A stapling mechanism for tubular containers having at closure elements adapted to be secured to a tubular body blank provided with tab parts extending from the body blank and arranged, when folded down, to overlap the nat closure element, said stapling mechanism comprising a' staple driving mechanism, a staple clinching anvil, a table adapted to support a tubular container for rotation with respect to the stapling mechanism, means for positioning the container on the table, whereby, upon rotation of the container, successive edge portions of the container and closure belement will be presented to the'stapling mechanism and means operative upon movement ofthe container to move the tabs on the tubular body from aligned position with the tubular body wall into ilatwise engagement with the closure element to present successive portions thereof to the stapling mechanism.
6. A stapling mechanism for tubular containers having at closure elements adapted to be secured to a tubular body blank provided with tab parts extending from the body blank and arranged, when folded down, to overlap the nat closure element, said stapling mechanism comprising a table adapted to support a tubular container for rotation, a staple driving mechanism, a staple clinching anvil, drive means for positioning the container on the table, guide means directing successive edge portions of the container toward the closure element to be presented to the stapling mechanism, and means operative upon movement of the container to move the tabs on the tubular body from aligned position with the tubular body wall into ilatwise engagement with the closure element to present successive portions thereof to the stapling mechanism.
7. A stapling mechanism for tubular containers having overlapping closure formingparts closing an open end of the container, said lstapling mechanism comprising, in combination, a table, a base element, bearing-providing mounting means for supporting the table" on and for movement relatively to the base element, a staple driving head, a staple clinching anvil comprising a post supported on the base element movable with and projecting upwardly from the table, said clinching anvil post having its upper portion away from the center of the container and adjacent the outer portions thereof.
8. A stapling mechanism for tubular containers comprising a horizontal table, a base element supporting said table, a staple driving mechanism, a clinching anvil post supported on the base portion, extending from the table and arranged to cooperate with the staple driving mechanism whereby staples may be inserted through 'overlapping container parts at an end of a tubular container, means for mounting the table support and the clinching anvil post to rack into and out of operative position with respect to the staple driving mechanism, whereby the table and clinching anvil post may be moved to an inoperative position, in which the clinching anvil is separated from the staple driving mechanism and driving means for rotating the container.
9. A stapling mechanism for tubular containers horizontal table, bearing-providing tiltable mounting means for supporting the table lon and for movement relatively to the base element, a staple driving mechanism, a clinching anvil post having connection for movement with the table on the base element, said post extendingfrom the table and arranged to cooperate with the stapledriving mechanism whereby staples can be driven through successive overlapping container parts at an end of a tubular container,` driving means for actuating the mechanism and rotating the container, there being aportion of said driving means adaptedto have an additional movement to impair transmission cooperation whereby the table and clinching anvil post may be tilted to an inoperative position in which the vclinching anvil is separated from the staple drivanism and clinching anvil, means for moving the clinching anvil and container supporting means to a position in which the container on the container supporting means will be maintained out of operative relation to the staple driving mechanism, and means for disconnecting the container rotating means to allow the clinching anvil and container supporting means to be moved to such inoperative position.
ll. A stapling mechanism for tubular containers having overlapping closure forming parts closing an open end of the container, said stapling mechanism comprising, in combination, a staple driving mechanism, a staple clinching anvil, bearing-providing tiltable mounting means for supporting the anvil and a container around the clinching anvil, thereby permitting the movement of the clinching anvil and container supporting means into Aand out of operative relation with the staple driving mechanism, means for rotating the container` to present successive parts of a container to the staple driving mechanism, and means for holding the clinching anvil in operative position.
12. A stapling mechanism for tubular containers having overlapping closure forming par-ts for closing an open end of a container, said stapling mechanism comprising, in combination, a staple driving mechanism, a clinching anvil, movable means for supporting a container for rotation to bring successive portions thereof into operative relation with the staple driving mechanism and clinching anvil movable with said means, means for rotating the container in stepby-step relation, means for driving staples when the container is stationary between periods of movement, and means for disconnecting the operation of the container rotating means and actuation of the staple driving mechanism.
13. A stapling mechanism comprising, in combination, staple driving means, a table for supporting a cylindrical container having a ilat closure disc adapted to be secured to the wall of the container by attaching naps overlapping the closure disc, a clinching anvil post having an anvil surface disposed in operative position with respect to the staple driving mechanism, a base element, bearing-providing movable mounting means for the table and post on the base element for shifting the table and post suiliciently clear of the staple driving means to permit a container to be placed on the table, means associated with the table for clamping a. container thereon, the clamping means gripping against the inside and outside surfaces of the container walls, and an actuator for operating the clamping means to rotate the container to present to the staple driv-V ing mechanism successive portions of the closure of a container.
14. A stapling mechanism for tubular con-v tainers having overlapping closure forming parts for closing an open end of the container, said stapling mechanism comprising in combinatie a base, a staple'driving mechanism, a staple clinching post, bearing-providing tiltable mounting means for supporting the post on the base, said post having a clinching anvil surface disposed in operative relation to the staple driving mechanism, and la. container supporting member assembled for movement with -the post and includingY means for progressively positioning a container opposite the staple clinching post 15. A stapling mechanism for tubular cont tainers having overlapping closure forming parts for closing an open endof a container, said stapling mechanism comprising, in combination, a base, a staple driving mechanism, a movably mounted clinching anvil, movable means for supporting a container for rotation -to bring successive portions thereof into operative relation with the staple driving mechanism and clinch-- ing anvil, means for vrotating the container in step-by-step relation, means for controlling the staple driving mechanism to drive staples when the container supporting means is stationary between periods of movement, said container supporting means being adjustably supported for movement'with the anvil and with respect to the staple driving mechanism, and trip means for disconnecting the operation of the container rotating means and the lactuation of the staple driving mechanism.
16. A stapling mechanism for cylindrical containers having flat closure element adapted to be secured to a cylindrical body blank provided with a plurality oi' tabs extending from the body blank and arranged, when folded down, to overlap the closure element, the stapling mechanism comprising staple driving'means, a movable staple l clinching anvil, a. movable table adapted to be moved with the anvil and to support the cylindrical container ony an open end to present the other end in'proper relation to the staple driving mechanism, driving' means for rotating the container in step-by-step relation, and means for synchronizin'gvthe driving of staples so that a mechanism and clinching anvilthe table may locate tab parts on a closure element of the container, intermittent drivemeans for progressing the container relatively to the anvil, whereby successive edge portions of the container and closure element are presented to the stapling mechanism, and means operative upon movement of the container to move the tabs on the tubular body from aligned position with the tubular body wall into fiatwise engagement with the closure element to present successive portions thereof to the stapling mechanism.

A stapling mechanism for a tubular container, said staplng mechanism comprising, in combination, a table, a base element supporting the table for movement relatively thereto, a staple driving head, a staple clinching anvil comprising a post supported on. the base element and projecting upwardly from the table and having movement therewith relatively to the driving head, said clinching anvil post having its upper portion away from the center of the container y an end section, `said mechanism comprising a horizontal table, a base element supporting said table, a staple driving mechanism, a clinching anvil post supported on the base element, extending from the table and arranged to cooperate with the staple driving mechanism whereby staples may be inserted through overlapping container parts at an end of a tubular container, there being a rockable mounting adapting the table support and the clinching anvil post to rock on the base element into and out of operative position with respect to the staple driving mechansm, whereby the table and clinching anvil post may be moved to an inoperative position, in which the clinching anvil-is separated from the staple driving mechanism, and driving means for progressing the container.

A stapling mechanism for tubular containers having container parts overlapping an end section, said mechanism comprising, in combination, a base element, a horizontal table tiltably supported on the base element, a staple driving mechanism, a clinching anvil post, and bearing-providing tiltable mounting means for supporting the post and table on the element, whereby the table and clinching anvil post may be tilted to an inoperative position in which the clinching anvil is separated from the staple driving mechanism.- said post extending from the table and arranged to cooperate with the staple driving mechanism whereby staples can be driven through successive overlapping container parts at an end of a tubular container, driving means for actuating the mechanism and rotating the container, there being a portion of said driving means adapted to have an additional movement to impair transmission cooperation.

A stapling mechanism for a tubular container having overlapping closure forming parts closing an open end of the container, said stapling mechanism comprising, in combination, a stapie driving mechanism, a staple cuncing anvil, a base element, tiltable mounting means for supporting a container around the clinching anvil, said mounting means and anvil being rockably mounted on the base element, thereby permitting moving of the clinching anvil and container supporting means into and out of operative relation with the staple driving mechanism,
'means for rotating the container to present successive parts of a container to the staple driving mechanism, and means for holding the clinching anvil in operative position.
22. A stapling mechanism for a tubular container having overlapping closure forming parts ior closing an open end of the container, said stapling mechanism comprising, in combination,
a base, a staple driving mechanism, an opposing` relatively shiftable anvil, and a container supporting member, an actuator for progressively positioning a supported container relatively to the anvil, and bearing-providing movable mounting means for the member and anvil on the base and thereby adapted for shifting of the container with the anvil into and out of operative stapling position.
24. A stapling mechanism comprising, in combination, staple driving means, a table for supporting a cylindrical container having a at closure disc adapted to be secured to the wall pf the container by attaching ilaps overlapping the closure disc, a clinching anvil post having an anvil surface disposed in operative position with respect to the staple driving mechanism, a base element, bearing-providing movable mounting means for the table and post on the base element for shifting the table and post suiilciently clear of the staple driving means to permit a container to be placed on the table, means associated with the table for clamping a container thereon, the clamping means gripping against the inside and outside surfaces of the container walls, and an actuator for operating the clamping means to rotate the container to present to the staple driving mechanism successive portions of the closure of a container.
