N.PETERS, PHOTmUTHQGRAPN i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
O. H. MELENDY, OF DELHI, IOVA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEEDING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,4Sl. dated April 5, 1859.
To @ZZ whom, t may concern.:
side, a curved bar, I, is attached by a pivot, fi.
BeitknownthatI, O. H. MELENDY, ofDelhi, 'These bars are allowed to swing loosely on in the county of Delaware and State of Iowa, have invented a new 'and useful Improvement in Seeding-Iliachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionv of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichliligure l. is a side sectional view of my in.- vention, taken in the line a' x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct myinvention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a horizontal frame, which is mounted on two. wheels, B13/5 and C is a drivers seat, which is placed 011 the frame A, directly over the axle D of the wheels B B. On each side of the frame A, and directly in front ol" each wheel B, a seed-box, D, is placed, and E is a slide, which is placed transversely in the under side of the front part of the frame A and allowed to work freely therein. This slide E has holes c made through it-one near each end-and the ends of the slide work underneath or at the lower parts of the seedboxes D D, the slide resting or working on plates b, which are attached to the lower ends ot' the seed-boxes- (See Fig. l.)
'Io` the under side of the frame A, near its front part, a lever, F, is attached by a ful- Crum-pin, c, and the front end of this lever is attached by a pivot, d, to the slide Il] at about its center. The back end of the lever F is attached by a pivot, e, to a slide, G, which works in proper guides attached to the under side of the frame A, and to the slide G the lower end of a vertical lever, H, is attached, said lever extending upward in front of the seat C. To a certain number of spokes, f, of the wheel B oblique or beveled projections g are attached, said projections extending inward, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. These projections may be formed of metal strips bent in loop form, and they may be attached to the spokes by screws. The outer end of the slide G proj ects beyond the side of the frame A and within the plane ofthe movement of the projections g. Against the back end of the lever F a spring, l1', bears.
To the front part of the frame A, and at each their pivots, and in the lower end ot' each bar a rotary cutter, J, is fitted. The bars I are connected by links j to similar bars, K, the upper ends of which are. also pivoted in the under side ol.' the frame A, as shown at k, the bars being allowed to swing freely on their pivots. The links I are simply metal bars pivoted at their ends to the bars I K, as shown clearly in Fig. l. To the upper surface ot' each bar K a rod, m, is attached, and these rods pass through the frame A, and are attaclled to a traverse-bar, L, on the frame A. To the center of the bar L a lever, M, is attached, said lever having its fulcrum at mi and extending back near the seat C.
To the lower ends ofthe bars K standards n are attached-one to each-and to each standard a share, o, is secured. These shares are of the shovel or cultivator form, and are placed directly behind the' rotary cutters J, as shown clearly in Fig. l. To each bar K two bars, N N, are attachedone at each side--u said bars having each a covering-share, p, att-ached to its back end.
To the back part of the frame A, and at equal distances from its center, bars O I3 are placed, said bars corresponding to the bars I K, and having attached to them, respectively, rotary cutters Q and shares R, corresponding with the cutters J and shares o of the bars I K, the bars O P being connected by links j', and the bars l? coimected by rods m to a lever, m, which corresponds to the lever M of the bars K. The cutters Q and shares R may be used as cultivators only. In the latter case coveringshares p may be dispensed with.
The operationvis as follows: As the implement is drawn along the cutters J divide all roots, weeds, &c., that may lie in their path. The shares o make the necessary furrows to receive the seed, which is discharged from the boxes D D in consequence of the reciprocating movement given the slide Eby the action of the projections g of the spokes j" on said slide, in connection with the spring h, the holes a illing with seed when they are within the seed-boxes, the seed being discharged therefrom as the holes are withdrawn from underneath the seed-boxes. In case obstructions lie in the paths of the shares o o the latter are elevated above them bythe bars I and cutters J. The latter of course, in consequence of their rotation, readily pass over abrupt prominences of moderate dimensions, obutthe shares o cannot unless elevated. In consequence, therefore, of having the bars I K connected by the links j, the upward movement ofthe bars I will be transmitted to the bars K, and the shares.
o therefore will be made to readily pass over obstructions. This is an important feature of the invention, as the shares 0 would be other- Wise caught and retained by obstructions,
theplanting .of the seed in check-rows.v It Willalso be seen that both the rotaryl cutters J Q and the shares o R may be elevated by actuating the levers M M.
I do not claim, broadly, the employment or use of a reciprocating seed-slide, E, for they are Well known and in coinmon use; but,
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The levers F II, slides E G, and projections g on the Wheel B', in connection with the bars I K O l), connected by the linksj j', the Whole being arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
` O. I-I. MELENDY.
