PACKAGING OF WALLPAPERING MATERIAL Filed March 27, 1943' Patented Mar. 28, 1944 2,345,190 PACKAGING F WALLPAPERING MATERIAL Harry Freund, Chicago, 111., assignor to United Wall Paper Factories, Inc., a corporation of Delaware Application March 27, 1943, Serial No. 480,781
4 Claims. (oi. 20647) This invention relates to an improvement in the packaging of wallpapering materials. Herepapered, and to purchase just enough border material for such walls. When purchasing a number of small rolls in the customary way, it has sometimes been impossible to find in the available stock from which the rolls are selected, rolls in which the colors accurately match each other inasmuch as all of the rolls are not necessarily made in the same run of the wallpaper printing machine.
The conventional method of packaging wallpaper in relatively small rolls also, in many cases, results in considerable waste of paper because of unusable left-over lengths. Again, the householder who purchases wallpaper and attempts to do the work of hanging it without employing a skilled tradesmen often finds it very difiicult to properly determine how many rolls of paper are required and how much paste material should be purchased and prepared.
The present invention has for its main objects the packaging of wallpapering material in package units, each embodying all of th wallpaper, border and paste material required for the wallpapering or decorating of the average sized room, thereby simplifying for a person unskilled in the art of paper hanging the purchase of such materials; to simplify the dealer's problem of stocking, handling and selling wallpaper; and in general, it is the object of the invention to provide an improved package of wallpapering material.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood by reference to the following specification and accompanying drawing, wherein there is illustrated an improved package of wallpapering material embodying a selected form of the invention In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective illustrating a complete package;
Fig. 2 is a perspective illustrating the package with the outer wrapper removed;
Fig. 3 is a. longitudinal section on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fi 3.
.The improved package illustrated in the drawing embodies a single or continuous web of wallpaper 5 wound into a roll on a tubular cardboard core 6.
The wallpaper 5 is rolled with its decorative surface on the outside of the roll so that. the design of the paper is visible on the surface of the roll as indicated at 1 in Figs. 1 and 2. To prevent the wallpaper from unrolling, small tape strips such as indicated at 8 are adhesively attached at the opposite sides of the outer end portion of the wallpaper web, and said tape strips extend beyond said outer end so as to overlap and be secured to the respective margins of the roll beyond the otherwise free end of the web. The wallpaper is normally provided with unfinished margins 9 which are to be trimmed from the web preparatory to hanging of the web, and said tape strips are applied in said marginal areas whereby no loss of wallpaper can be occasioned by the removal of the tape strips when the roll is opened.
The length of the web of wallpaper which is wound into the roll is preferably such that a single roll of the paper will be adequate to cover a room of average size.
A strip of border paper is wound upon itself to form a roll H! which is disposed within one end portion of the hollow of the core 6, said core being of such inside diameter that it will readily accommodate the roller border strip.
A package ll of paste material is also disposed in the hollow of said core 6, said package being of any suitable construction. In this instance the paste package H is illustrated as being in the form of a paper board cylinder having end caps l3 applied thereto and containing powdered paste material [4. The length of the. paste material package and the length of the border strip roll to is preferably such that when the packages are disposed end to end within the core 6, they Will substantially equal the length of said core.
A sample strip Ills of the border material is secured to the outside of the roll of Wallpaper with the design of the borderstrip facing outwardly so as to 'be visible. Said sample strip extends lengthwise of the roll and is adhesively secured to the surface thereof adjacent to the end of the wall paper web, preferably within an inch or two thereof. By so locating the border sample strip, only a few inches of the end portion of the wall paper web will be spoiled because of the attachment of the border strip. It is desirable that the border strip should not overlap the end of the wallpaper web so as to avoid any possibility of smearing any adhesive employed for attaching the sample strip to the surface of the roll on the surface of the roll beyond said end of the web. As shown in Fig. 2, the border sample strip His is spaced a short distance, indicated at 15, from the free end of the wall paper web, said distance being usually less than the width of the border strip although subject to considerable variation since it is not critical. It may be observed, however, that the closer said sample strip is disposed to the end of the wallpaper web, the lower the necessary waste of wallpaper,
The Wallpaper roll, including the attached border sample strip and the enclosed paste material package and border strip roll, is wrapped in a transparent wrapping sheet 16 which may be of any suitable material such as Cellophane, Pliofilm, or glassine paper, through which the design of the wallpaper and of the border sample may be observed. Said wrapper prefera'bly extends more than once around the roll so as to have an outer end portion overlapping an.- other portion. The Width of the overlap is pref.- erably small, as indicated at H, and the overlapping portions are adhesiveiy united so as to maintain the wrapper in taut condition around the roll. Adhesive employed for securin the over.- lapped portions of the wrapper together is spaced from the inner end of the wrapper sufficiently to prevent any of such adhesive from reaching the surface of the wallpaper, and it should, of course, be of such character that it will not penetrate the wrapper and thereby reach the surface of the wallpaper. As indicated in Fig. .4, the overlapped portions of the wrapper are adhesively united in only a portion I8 of the width of the overlapped areas for the purpose indicated.
The wrapper I6 is of greater width than the length of the roll, and end portions IQ of the wrapper are folded inwardly across the ends of the package where they are secured by means of sealing discs 20 which are adhesively attached to said inwardly folded wrapper portions. As shown, the sealing members 20 are disposed on the outside of the package ends, and they may advantageously be in the form of labels which may carry identifying data for the content. of the package.
The combined length of the paste material package and the border strip roll, being substantially equal to the length of the roll of wallpaper, is effectively held against endwise shifting within the roll by the sealed wrapper ends. This arrangement avoids the application of considerable forces on the Wrapper such as would occur if the enclosed paste package or border strip roll were permitted to slide endwise in the handling of the roll, with the resulting hammering on the sealed wrapper ends. Furthermore, this arrangement prevents the border strip roll from being distort.- ed as by inward or outward coning, which condition would make possible damaging of the relatively weak coned portions of the roll.
The described wallpaper package, embodying enough wallpaper in a continuous length for the papering of the walls of an average room, pro,- vides a number of important advantages. For example, a single length web of Wallpaper for a room of given size need not embody as much wallpaper as the conventional single, double, or triple rolls inasmuch as there is considerable economy obtained by avoiding thewaste of end portions of many rolls instead of one roll. Again, the purchaser of a continuous length roll of wallpaper sufl'icient for the walls of one room avoids any difiiculty in respect of matching a multiplicity of rolls as is required in the conventional practice. Where a continuous roll web is purchased, it is necessarily true that the entire length was pro uced in a single run o the wallp printing machine, which makes it practically certain that there will be no variation in the shading of the colors employed in the printing of the web. Where a multiplicity of rolls are purchased for the papering of the walls of a single room, it is important that the color employed in the designs in each roll be carefully matched with those of the other rolls inasmuch as the rolls may have been produced in two or more runs of the wallpaper printing machine with at least some variation in the shades of the colors employed in the printing of such rolls.
The sealed wrapping of the rolls also insures delivery to the customer of a clean roll of Wallpaper usable substantially in its entirety, thereby o din lo ses ncident to tearin and soilin of t e uter nd portions of c nventional unwrapp wallpaper r l s, A ain, in the retail selling of Wal paper acka ed in the manner above descri ed, the mat rial may e priced per r om rather than per roll, and this is advantageous to bOththe customer and the dealer in that the customer immediately knows the cost of a com- Piste oom lob and the dealer is saved the necessity of: Computing the cost of the several items constituting an order for material for the deco, rating of one room. Further advantage is found in the fact that a single web of the necessary length for papering one room, when wound into a single roll, produces a considerably smaller package than would an equivalent number of conventional short length rolls when bundled together. Hence, handling of the wallpaper is facilitated and storage space requirements substantially reduced. Changes may be made in the described package without departing from the invention as defined in the following claims.
