UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN FORBES, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND W. T, HILDRUP, OF SAME PLACE.
CORE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,263, dated November 9, 1880. Application filed September 25, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FORBES, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gore-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to boxes for forming cores upon which car-wheels are cast, and have for their object to facilitate the work of making the cores to render them more uniform and less expensive than heretofore.
The invention consists in a core-box having a lid fitted for use as a sweep in striking the core and apertured to give access to the box;
also, in the combination, with the corebox, of flanged tubes for strengthening the legs of the core and giving'vent, all as hereinafter set forth with reference to the accom pan yin g drawings.
i In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a core-box constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the cover partially broken open.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the base or main portion of the box, formed with legs a a and in a single piece. B is the cap or cover, formed with handles 1) b.
0 The base A is of usual shape, and has its central raised portion, 0, formed with an aperture that receives an annular flange of the central portion, 61, of the cover, so that the cover can turn and is retained in position.
3 5 The cover is formed with apertures 6 above the concave portion of base A, which give access to the interior of the box.
In the legs a there are tapering tubes f, which are flanged on their lower ends, and are 0 held central of the legs by pins 9, inserted through the bottom of the legs and the tubes.
By the above-described construction the sand can be arranged and packed in the core-box through the apertures e of the cover and the cover revolved to strike the top of the core, 5 thereby rendering the core symmetrical and true. N o sweep is needed, as the cover serves as such, and the cover being in one piece with a level center portion insures a good support to the anchor and uniformity in the size of cores.
The tubes f remain in the legs of the core after its removal from the box, and serve both to strengthen the legs and give a free vent. Their lower flanged ends protect the legs and support the core safely.
With this core-box a cheaper quality of sand than heretofore required can be used. for making the core, thereby forming a more open core, which will dry quickly and vent freely.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The core-box cover 13, having handles b, apertures e, and a flange, d, turning in an ap- 6g erture of the base, as and for the purpose specifled.
2. In eore-boXes,coverB, formed with handles 1), apertures e, and flanged center 61, combined with base A, having the apertured and raised central portion, 0, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
3. The flanged tubes f and pins g, combined with a core-box having legs a, as and for the purposes set forth.
JOHN FORBES.
