BAG FILLING APPARATUS WITH GRAVITY DIS CHARGE v Fi led Nov. 4, 1940 QwwWIM Patented Jan. 25, 1944 BAG marina APPARATUS WITH GRAVITY DISCHARGE- William E. Peterson, Oswego, N. Y., assignor to St. Regis Paper Company, New York, N. IL, a corporation of New York Application November 4, 1940, Serial No. 364,177
5 Claims. (01. 22 -42) This invention relates to valve bag filling apparatus from which a filled bag is discharged by gravity, and more particularly it relates to a bottomv support for the bag by which an advantageous discharging movement is obtained.
In the drawing, illustrating one embodiment of the invention, there is shown a side elevation of the mounting of the bottom support with so much of the apparatus as to show its relationship thereto and the manner in which it may be used.
In the drawing there is shown a conventional filling spout II for filling a valve bag l4, which is shown thereon in filling position. A frame member I2 is shown which may be any suitable supporting member, usually mounted upon a suitable weighing device, not shown.
During the filling operation the bag is retained upon the filling spout by a suitable and usual clamp, indicated at ll, the operation of which forms no part of the present invention.
At the bottom of the frame I2, there is mounted a bracket 3|]. Near the front of this bracket there is a pivot 3| on which there is mounted a tilting member 32. In member 32 there are pins 33 and 34 adapted to enter notches 35 in a supporting rod 36. Rod 36 is normally held against pins 33 and 34 by means of an eccentric 37 which is biased by means of an arm 38 extending therefrom to which there is attached a spring 39. It will be readily understood that when desired the eccentric may be turned against the tension'of the spring and the rod 36 thereby moved away from pins 33 and 34 and adjusted to the desired height.
On the upper end of rod 36 there is a head 40 provided with a pivot 4| for a bottom support 42. A plate 43 adapted to fit the rear of the bag is adjustably attached to a rod 44 projecting upward from the bottom of the support by means of a set screw 45. A spring 46 connects head 40 to the frame l2.
Presuming the parts to be in the position in which they are shown in the drawing, it will be seen that the bag will receive material through spout until it is filled. Then the filling of material through the spout is stopped in any suitable way and clamp I1 is released.
Pivot 4| is to the left of the center of gravity of the filled bag, so that the weight of the bag tilts the bag bottom 42 and plate 43 until the plate fits snugly against the bag. Pivot 3| is still farther to the left of the center of gravity of the filled bag, so that, as soon as the clamp is released, the bag and bag support, including tilting member 32, swing about pivot 3| to the limited extent to which member 32 is allowed to tilt by bracket 30. Thereafter the bag bottom and plate 33 tilt about pivot ll until the bag slips off.
It will be seen that plate 43 is pressed snugly against the side of the bag as soon as the weight filled into the bag shifts the center of gravity of the support and bag to the right of pivot 4|, and the plate remains snugly against the bag until its upper end is swung well to the right of the filling spout, so that the plate protects the bag from any material which may fall from the end of the filling spout during the discharge movement.
The swing about pivot 3| moves the bottom of the bag as well as the top thereof to the right. This, together with the stripping action of plate 43, effects a proper removal of the bag from the filling spout, while the final tilting about pivot 4| quickly swings the bag to substantially horizontal position as it is dropped onto an ofi-carrying belt or other support.
After the bag support returns to its normal position, an empty bag is placed on the filling spout and the operation is repeated.
What I claim is:

4. Apparatus for filling valve bags comprising a substantially horizontal spout adapted to enter the valve of a bag, a support for the bottom of a bag being filled on said spout, a plate on the support in position to contact the side of a ba beneath the entrance end of the spout, a pivotal mounting for the support allowing it to tilt under the Weight of a bag being filled thereon and press the plate against the side of the bag, and another pivotal mounting for the support materially below the first said pivotal mounting.
5. Apparatus for filling Valve bag comprising a substantially horizontal spout adapted to enter the valve of a bag, a support for the bottom of a bag beneath said spout, a member on which the support is pivotally mounted, the vertical plane of the pivot being between the center of gravity of a filled bag on said support and the entrance end of the spout, a pivotal mounting for said member lower than the first said pivot, the vertical plane of the second said pivot being between the first said pivot and the entrance end of the spout, and means limiting the movement of said member about its said pivotal mounting, whereby the filled bag is swung by gravity first about the second said pivot until the limit of movement of said member about its pivotal mounting is reached and then said bottom support is swung about its pivot on said member.
