This invention relates to sliders for separable fasteners employing stringers coupled and uncoupled by a slider movable along the stringers.
More particularly, the invention relates to an automatic lock slider of thi class employing a tiltable lock element or pin actuating element with which a chain or other flexible member is coupled'in forming a pull for operating the slider along fastener stringers whereby operation of the slider by the pull will release the lock element. The novel features of'the invention will be best understood from the following description when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which certain embodiments of the invention 7 are disclosed, and in which theseparate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views; and in which:

In lock sliders of the kind under consideration it has been customary to employ substantially rigid strip or tab-lik finger pieces or pulls-for actuating or releasing the lock element of the It is the purpose of my present invention to so construct the lock element or the means directly actuating said element as to adapt the same for the use of flexible pulls, such for example, as pull chains, straps, and the like.

The ferrule 'l 1 also has an enlarged annular flange 24 at the base thereof which forms a' seat for a spring 25, the other end 'of the spring seating'upon an inturned flange list the open end of the socket l5.
When the socket opening is formed initially, the walls thereof will not include the flange 26. After-the parts are assembled in the socket, this flange is formed by turning the upper end of the ring=like body 21 inwardly. v
Centrally of the bottom wall of the socket l5 is'a conical aperture 28 which opens into the channel of the slider body l0, so that in the normal position of the lock element l6, as seen in Fig. 2, the pin portion ll! of said element will be projected into the channel. However, when the pull 2| is engaged for operating the slider, the ferrule portion II will be tilted as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawing and the pin part l8 withdrawn from the channel of the slider body. This operation will be performed regardless of'the direction in which the ferrulev is tilted. The moment the pull -2l i released, the spring will return the pin part I 8 to operative position. v
In Fig. 4 of the drawing is shown a cross sec tion through a slider taken through a cup shaped socket portion 29 similar to the portion 21. In this construction, a ferrule 30 is provided which difl'ers from the ferrule II, in that two pins 3| and 32 are coupled to opposed Sides thereof-with the heads of the pins engaging recesses in the seen at 33. A chain 34, similar to the chain 2|, is coupled with the terrule and a spring 35 normally supports the ferin operative position, that'is to say, projected intothe channel of the slider. In the socket is arranged a lock element 45, 'which comprises a pin-like structure having a lower conical or pointed end 46 adapted to project into the channel of the slider and an upper apertured end 41 with which alink chain or other flexible pull 48 may be coupled. This coupling may, for example, be made through the'use of a split ring 49. Intermediate the ends of the element 45 is an enlarged flange portion 50 which fits withinthe socket 40 and forms a seat for a spring 5|, the other end of the spring seating on the washer or ring 43.
With the construction shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, operation of the slider through the medium of the pull or chain 48 will cause the lock element 45 to be raised or tilted in the socket 40 against the action of the spring 5| to withdraw the pin 46 from the slider channel, and on the release of the pull, the spring will automatically return the lock element to operative position.
With the construction shown in Fig. .5, the lock element comprises a unitary body, that is to say, the pin portion'46 is integralwith the parts 41 and 50, but it will be apparent that the element may be composed of independently movable parts as is taught in the other figures, and in the same sense-the structure of said other figures may be integral. In some instances, relative movement of the pin part with respect to its support is desirable.. In other instances this independent movement can be dispensed with. It will also be understood that the shape and structure of.
the lock in element may be such as to provide a more or less positive lock of the slider on the stringers, whereas in other instances this element may be so constructed as to provide release of the lock element when the stringers are subjected to excessive strains tending to separate the same. This last operation will be performed by forcible outward movement of the lock element against its supporting spring by the link or links engaging the element. .1 It will be understood that, with the present construction, the lock element and pull comprises a unit which as an assemblage is insertable into the slider socket. In some instances the unit is permanently retained in position by inturned flanges, but by using spring ring retainers, as at -43, this unit may be made detachable for any purpose. In connection with this latter feature, when dealing wit plastic type of pulls, difierent color combination in the balls -or links of the chain may' lie-proVided by simply substituting a new unit;these units, as such, would constitute articles 'of'manufacture which may be supplied to the r'firchant for interchanging or substitutions as mentioned above. It will also appear that such repair or other purposes and any means may be provided to facilitate quick attachment and detachment of these combined pull and lock units, Upon consideration of the present structure it or washer 43, or this also appear that the flexible pull, suchfor example, as the chain, may be said to include an integral lock element. In other words, op-' eration of the lock element, to move the same into inoperative positions, is controlled by the pull chain, means being employed to supp rt the element in operative position.
Having fully described my claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination with body for separable fastener stringers, of a lock element movably supported in one wall of the slider body and retained against displacement from said wall, a spring normally supporting the lock element in operative position, a chain movably coupled with said element, forming a pull for actuating the slider bodyand movement of the lock element into inoperative position, said element including a ferrule portionyand said,-
chain having a ball end universally coupled said ferrule portion.
2. The combination with a channelled slider body for separable fastener stringers, of a lock element movably supported in one wall of the slider-body and retained against displacement from said wall, a spring normally supporting the lock element in operative position, a chain movably coupled with said element, forming a pull for actuating the slider body and movement of the lock element into inoperative position, said element including a ferrule portion, said chain having a ball end universallycoupled in said ferruleportion, and said element including a pin partmovably supported in the ferrule portion.
3. In lock sliders for separable fastener stringers, a slider body comprising spaced walls joined at one end by a connecting web, said walls defining a channel extending through said body, one wall of said body having an outwardly projecting ring forming in said wall a large socket.

The combination with a channelled slider body, of a universally tiltable member, a flexible pull coupled with said member for tilting the same, a lock part centrally of said member extending into the channel of said slider, and a spring normally supporting said member with said part in operative position.
