4 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved carrier head for a pneumatic tube carrier.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved carrier head which is simple in construction, easily assembled, and capable oi quick production at relatively small cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved carrier head which includes a cylin drical body, a felt bumper and a pair of leather Washers between the bumper and the body, the latter providing a sealing means `for irictional contact with the pneumatic tube.
A further object of this invention is to provide a carrier head ol this kind which includesl an improved indicating means circumferentially adjustable about the head for indicating the particular department from which the carrier is sent.
To the foregoing objects and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more speciiically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of this invention, but it is to be understood thatv changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope oi the invention, as claimed.
ln the drawing: Y
Figure 1 is a detail side elevation oi a carrier head for a pneumatic dispatch case or carrier, constructed according to an embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the head;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional View, taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the inner body forming part of the head; and
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing,v the numeral il! designates generally a cylindrical body which is adapted to be inserted in a dispatch case, one form oi which is shown in dotted lines in Figure l, and indicated by the numeral il. The body i@ is formed, intermediate the ends thereof, with an annular, outwardly projecting rib I2, which divides the body Ill into an inner telescoping part i3 which is adapted to be inserted within the dispatch member l l, and the body lil also includes an outer body part l which is substantially shorter in length than the inner body part i3.
A cylindrical sleeve or ring l5 is rotatably mounted on the outer body part and is provided with a knurled outer surface I6 and also with a window openingY il. The outer periphery of the outer body part lli is provided with indicia i8 which are adapted to be exposed through the Window il upon rotation of the sleeve Iii to the desired point. The indicia it are adapted to indicate the particular department in a store, building or the like from which the dispatch case emanates.
The outer body part It, at a point below the indicia i8, is formed with an elongated recess or detent lil, and a longitudinally bowed spring 2% is adapted to seat in the recess i9 and bear against the inner side of the sleeve l5 so as to irictionally Hold the sleeve i5 in a selected position for exposing the selected indicia i8.
The outer end of theV outer body part ill is formed with an inturned ange 2l and a discshaped plate 22 is disposed within the outer body part irl and bears against the inner side of the flange 2 l A fibrous head 23 is disposed upwardly oi the body l0, and is of a diameter substantially greater than the diameter or" the body lll and is formed of felt or the like for sliding contact with the inner surface of the pneumatic tube as the dispatch case is drawn along the interior of the tube. The head 23, in the center thereof, is formed with an inwardly extending socket 24 within which a plate 25 is seated. rlhe plate 25 is formed with a pair of inwardly pressed bolt head seats 26 and the heads of a pair of bolts 2l are engageable with the seats 26. The bolts 2l are extended through openings 28 formed in the head 23, and through openings 253 formed in the plate 22. An annular nut forming plate 3E is disposed on the inner side of the plate 22 and is formed with a pair of threaded openings 3l through which the bolts 2l are adapted to be threaded.
A pair of washers 32 and 33 are interposed between the inner end of the head 23 and the outer end of the body il). The washer 32 is substantially greater in diameter than the diameter of the fibrous head 23 and constitutes a sealing member for sealing the dispatch case within the pneumatic tube. The projecting portion of the washer or sealing member 32 is adapted to be bent over, as the dispatch case is inserted in the pneumatic tube, so that the inherent resiliency of the material forming the washer 32 will form a seal to prevent loss of suction and to provide for the free sliding movement of the dispatch case Within the pneumatic tube. The washer 33 is disposed between the Washer 32 and the flange 2l and is of a diameter smaller than washers 32 and 33 will be tightly held between the body l0, and the head 23.
In the use and operation of this device, thel head structure hereinbefore described is adapted.,v
to be frictionally inserted within the dispatch case Il, and, if desired, may be secured by means of Y a bayonet slot and pin, or by friction. The
sleeve I5 is rotated about the outer body part' I4 to expose the desired indicia i8, which designates the particular department from which the dispatch case emanates. The dispatch case,
.with theimproved head, is then inserted in the pneumatic tube, the head- 23y being rst inserted so that the washer 32 will be bent inwardly in ythe direction of the body Ill. The suction Within the pneumatic tube Will then pull ther dispatch case tothe desired point. The spring 2Q will frictionally hold the sleeve I5 about the outer body part M so that the sleeve will not be rotated during the movement of the dispatch case within the tube.
The dispatch case il is here shown as a cylindrical body withwhich the head Ii) telescopes, but it will be understood that the head It may be used With other forms of dispatch cases.
