UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. BRADLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HYDROCARBON-BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,397, dated October 19, 1880.
Application filed May 26, 1880. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, HENRY A. BRADLEY, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvenient in Burners for Hydrocarbon Fuel, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a top view, partly in section, of my improved burner, and Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements on Patent N o. 217,259, granted to me ou the 8th day of July, 1879; and it consists, principally, in providing the spindle-valve therein described with a screw-thread for moving it up or down at a point below and with a stuffin g-box above the valve portion proper.
The invention also consists of other details of improvement, which are hereinafter Inore fully specified.
ln the accompanying drawings, theletterA represents. the shell of my improved burner, which I now make in one piece with the bottom plata-G; but the top plate, B, is fastened down by'means of bolts a a, that pass through ears b, that project inwardly from the shell. By this means I am able to remove the plate B even if the valve-spindles are screwed up, which the former construction did not enable me to do, and I now can open the shell even if one of the spindles sticks fast in its raised position. In every other respect the shell with its subdivisions is substantially as in the other patent, forming an upper larger chamber, el, and a lower annular chamber, c.
F F are the valve-spindles, of which either one or more may be used, andwhich extend upward through the partition D and into or against the top plate, B. Part of each valvespindle is screw-threaded, but not as in my former patent, where it passes through the partition D, for in this partition I have now placed a packing-box, f, that embraces the spindle and prevents steam from passing around it into the chamber d. The screw-thread is now put upon the lower part of the spindle-that is to say, below the valve proper, g-so as to screw into the partition U or into a cap, l1., placed into said partition. The valve portiong has apertures, and operates againsta valveseat in the partition D, as heretofore. Thus, by turning the spindle by a suitable instrulnent, taking hold of its lower end, it will be moved up or down to reduce or enlarge the discharge-oriflce for the hydrocarbon. and yet will i always move in the packing-box f, so that the steam in the chamber e will effect its legitimate function only, and not mingle with the liquid fuel in chamber d. The compression-nut of each packing-boxf becomes accessible by lifting the plate B, and, the several nuts ot' said packing-boxes are prevented from turning spontaneously by suitable nut-locks i, placed into the chamber d, as shown in Fig. 1.
I claim- 1. rlhe combination of the shell A, containing chambers d and c, with the partly-hollow spindle-valve F, having projecting valve g, and with the packing-box f, above the valve proper, g, and with a nut in the lower plate, C, the spindle-valve having a screw-thread below said valve proper, substantially as specified.
2. rIhe combination of the shell A, which is made in one piece with the bottom plate, C, with the removable top plate, B, fasteningbolts a, and packing box or boxes j', and one or more vertically -mo.vable spindle-valves, substantially as specified.
HENRY A. BRADLEY.
